Today is the super excellent auspicious day, the appearance day of Sri Gadadhara Pandita who is nearest and dearest to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. In Radha Krishna lila, Gadadhara Pandita is the direct manifestation of Shrimati Radhika. In Chaitanya charitamritam grantha, it is stated that there is two Gadhadara. One is Gadadhara Pandita and the other is Gadadhara Dasa who is also an expansion of Shrimati Radhika. Gadadhara Pandita is the original manifestation of Shrimati Radhika.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna taking Shrimati Radhika’s bhava (mood) and kanti (complexion). This is because in Krishna lila, Krishna cannot completely realise Shrimati Radhika’s highest mood, divya unmada (transcendental madness) in madanakhya-mahabhava.

In Kali-yuga, Krishna appears in the form of Shachinandana Gaurahari taking the complexion and mood of Shrimati Radhika. Radha bhava kanti curi kori krsna avatari hoila gaura avatari. In Chaitanya charitamritam, Krishna Kaviraja Gosvami also explained in this way, Krishna stole Shrimati Radhika’s mood and her complexion by manifesting as Shachinandana Gaurahari. Krsna stole Shrimati Radhika’s mood, vamya bhava because in the realm of prema, prema Vraja, vamya bhava (left wing mood) is very important especially in parakiya bhava (paramour mood).

Although Krishna took Shrimati Radhika parakiya bhava but Shrimati Radhika did not lose two things. As stated in shastra, in the realm of transcendental world, prema Vraja, in the realm of Divine love everything is infinite and never lose anything. As in mathematics, infinite minus infinite equals infinite. In the same way, in the transcendental world everything is infinite. Although Krishna took Shrimati Radhika’s vamya bhava but still She has this vamya bhava.

Some people might think that Krishna has taken Shrimati Radhika’s vamya bhava. Then Gadadhara Pandita who is Shrimati Radhika has lost it. Actually this is not true. Shrila Gurudev also explained very nicely, Shrimati Radhika has this vamya bhava and Gadadhara Pandita also has this vamya bhava because in the love the two moods are always going simultaneously, that is called dakshina bhava (submissive mood) and vamya bhava (left wing mood). These two moods always go side by side as like the river flows along two banks going side by side. In the same way, in the transcendental world in the realm of prema and prema Vraja, they are always going side by side. That is called dakshina bhava and vamya bhava.

Gadadhara Pandita was born in Navadvipa dhama because Krishna descended from Goloka Vrndavana to this material world with His own associates, parikar. It is also mentioned in this song, śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu jīve doyā kori’ swa-pārṣada swīya dhāma saha avatari’ atyanta durlabha prema koribāre dāna śikhāya śaraṇāgati (Sad-Anga Sharanagati – six-fold unconditional surrender – Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura). In this song, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu descended from Goloka Vrandavana with His own parikar because The Lord performs all His lila with His own nitya parikar, eternal associates. Without His eternal associates, Lord cannot perform His lila. That means Lord performs all His lila with His nitya parikar.

So, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Who is Krishna Himself brought all His nitya parikar like Shrimati Radhika appearing as Gadadhara Pandita, Lalita Devi as Svarupa Damodara, Maha Vishnu as Advaita Acharya appearing in Navadvipa dhama. Even Narada Rishi appears in Navadvipa dhama in the form of Shrivasa Thakura. In this way, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appears with His own parikar.

Gadadhara Pandita is always staying with Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with lots of love and affection. Wherever there is Gadadhara Pandita, there is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Likewise, wherever there is Nimai, there is Gadadhara Pandita. So, our Vaishanava sampradaya saying Gadai-Gouranga, Gouranga-Gadadhara. Nimai, He belongs to Gadadhara always and vice versa. Shachimata also loves Gadadhara Pandita as her own family member. They are staying together, eating and sleeping together also.

Sometimes, Shachimata felt in her heart that Nimai and Gadadhara as like Rama and Sita. As like Rama and Sita always staying together. Radha and Krishna always staying together. In the same way, Nimai and Gadadhara staying together with so much love and affection. Shachimata, she very nicely serves to Them. Sometimes, They are also quarrelling between with each other. That is called loving quarrel, prema kalaha because this is the nature. When love increase more and more that time this type of attitude coming in the heart of the lover and the beloved. This is the nature. Prema kalaha means lover and beloved when they come in this their attachment with love and affection.

This is also the nature of loving, joking, prema kalaha. Prema kalaha means loving quarrel. In this material world, we are also looking this way how the lover and the beloved sometimes they are quarrelling, sometimes argument. In the same way, Gaurasundara and Gadadhara, They also have too much deep attachment, love and quarrel but we got to be careful about gauranga-nagari-vada. Gauranga-nagari-vada that is called the sahajiya-vada. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu always staying with Gadadhara Pandit and Gadadhara Pandit always staying with Chaitanya Mahaparabhu. Where They are going, Both They are going.

Gadadhara is senior than Nimai. That means according to the age Nimai is junior. Both have love and affection for each other. So Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Nimai, He was the student of Sanskrit grammar. Gadadhara is older so he is the student of nyaya Shastra, logic. Nimai mostly, He also talk with Gadadhara about high level katha and then Gadadhara sometimes also shy. Gadadhara, he did not want to talk with Him but Nimai always forced to Gadadhara Pandit to discuss about that subject.

However, Gadadhara is very shy and did not wish to discuss with Nimai because Nimai is in the junior class. Srila Gurudev gave an example, if you want small boy speaking too much high level and at that time senior persons get upset. You have to speak according to your own level. Nimai his fault is always speaking higher level class katha. So Gadadhara, he sometimes did not want to speak to Nimai. But Nimai by force he was talking to him. So, Gadadhara when sometimes he returns from his school then Nimai also block the road and ask the question about logic.

One day Nimai ask Gadadhara, you tell to me according to your philosophy what is the meaning of mukti ? Mukti means liberation. Then Gadadhara first in a simple way told about the meaning of mukti – Shastra saying atanti dukha nrvritti rebahi mukti. Mukti means liberation. One is free from all kinds of distress. That is call the mukti. Simple meaning means free from all kinds of distress. That is call mukti.

In this material world, all we want is free from distress, mukti. Who does not want liberation? If you have some disease or distress or unhappiness you also want the happiness from distress. That is also called mukti.

Then Gadadhara also explained another meaning of mukti. Impersonalist they are also saying merge with Brahma. That is also called mukti. Then Gadadhara again explain visnu omri lahu mukti, one who attains the lotus feet of Lord that is call also mukti. Spiritual mukti, spiritual liberation. Vaikuntha mukti. There are many kinds off liberation.

According to Shastra there are four kinds of mukti – salokya, sarsti, sarupya and samipya. In Srimad Bhagavatam, Vyasadev Goswamipad also explain in this way there are four kinds of mukti, salokya, sarsti, sarupya and samipya. Another type of mukti, sayujya mukti, oneness mukti that is called fifth type of mukti, panca veda mukti. However, Krsna also told even I give these four types of mukti, salokya, sarsti, sarupya and samipya but those who are my devotee they won’t accept what to say about the oneness with the Lord. Diyamanam na grhnanti vina mat-sevanam janah (SB 3.29.13). Krsna told if I give this four types of Vaikuntha mukti. For those who are My devotee they don’t want this four kinds of mukti. What to say about brahma sayujya mukti ?

In our Shastra, there are many kinds of mukti. Brahma sayujya mukti, paramatma sayujya mukti. Yogis according to their yoga process they want to merge in Brahma. Paramatama sayujya mukti is also called isa sayujya mukti. In this way, Gadadhara also discussed these things. So many things Gadadhara also discussed but Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Nimai wasn’t satisfied. Nimai told I will not be satisfied with your answer. Gadadhara said, you are junior student speaking big big words. So what is your opinion about mukti ?

Then Chaitanya Mahaprabhu told the highest definition about mukti. He told, muktir hitvānyathā rūpaṁ sva-rūpeṇa vyavasthitiḥ (SB 2.10.6). Give up all kinds of activities. One who realises his own transcendental constitutional form, siddha-deha directly serves Radha and Krsna in Goloka Vrndavan. This is perfect mukti. In this way, Nimai provides the highest definition of mukti. Muktir hitvanyatha rupam sva-rupena vyavasthitih. In this way, Nimai and Gadadhara Pandit established this mukti tattva.

Then Gadadhara Pandit completely surrendered to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Without Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s instruction Gadadhara Pandit did not do anything. This is called sarvatma saranam. Without Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s any instruction Gadadhara Pandit did not do anything. This is called atma samarpam.

One day, Gadadhara Pandit asked Chaitanya Mahaprabhu whether should he take darshan of sadhu. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu replied, “Of course, you should take darshan of sadhu but only with the company of devotees. Otherwise, you cannot understand the activities of the sadhu”.

At that time, Srivas Thakur invited Gadadhara Pandit to go along with him to take darshan of sadhu. So, Gadadhara Pandit went along with Srivas Thakur and other devotees to take darshan of sadhu.

On their arrival at the sadhu, Pundarika Vidyanidhi’s residence, Gadadhara Pandit noted that Pundarika Vidyanidhi was elegantly dressed, seated on a golden decorated simhasana, with a golden spoon in his hand and chewing betel nut whilst being fanned by two servants on both sides. Also, Pundarika Vidyanidhi was receiving so much reverence from his visitors. Hence, Gadadhara Pandit mind became very disturbed. People generally think that sadhu means completely renounce without possessions and probably naked. This is their idea of sadhu with ashes on the body and dreadlocks. Gadadhara Pandit had similar thinking that how a sadhu is like. After a short while, Gadadhara Pandit left Pundarika Vidyanidhi’s residence.

Gadadhara Pandit seek Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Who is sarva antar-jnan, one who knows all the living entities. Chaitanya Mahaprahu asked Gadadhara Pandit, “Did you take dashan of sadhu” ? Gadadhara Pandit was shy and remained silent. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked again, “What happened” ? At that time, Gadadhara Pandit’s mind was very disturbed. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu realised that Gadadhara Pandit did not understand the heart of Pudarika Vidyanidhi.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu instructed Gadadhara Pandit to take dashan of sadhu in Pundarika Vidyanidhi’s residence. Meantime, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu instructed Mukunda Datta and other devotees to accompany Gadadhara Pandit.

On their arrival, Pundarika Vidyanidhi was sitting on a beautifully decorated simhasana very nicely. Then Mukunda Datta recited two slokas from Srimad Bhagavatam about Krsna’s rupa and Krsna’s guna, Krsna’s beauty and Krsna’s quality.

barhapidam nata-vara-vapuh karnayoh karnikaram
bibhrad vasah kanaka-kapisam vaijayantim ca malam
randhran venor adhara-sudhayapurayan gopa-vrndair
vrndaranyam sva-pada-ramanam pravisad gita-kirtih

[“Accompanied by His cowherd boyfriends, Syamasundara entered the forest of Vrnda Devi. His head was decorated with a peacock feather. He wore yellow karnikara flowers over His ears, a dazzling golden yellow garment on His body, and around His neck, extending down to His knees, hung a fragrant vaijayanti garland made of five kinds of flowers. Splendidly attired as a beautiful natavara, a most expert dancer, He appeared just like a very fine actor on stage. He poured the nectar of His lips through the holes of His flute, and the cowherd boys followed behind Him, singing His glories. In this way, the land of Vrindavana was even more charming than Vaikuntha, due to being beautified by Sri Krishna’s lotus feet marked with the conch, disk, and other symbols.” (Venu-gita)]

This sloka glorifies Krsna’s beautiful form. Another sloka is the glorification of Krsna’s quality – how Krsna is so wonderful and merciful.

aho bakī yaṁ stana-kāla-kūṭaṁ
jighāṁsayāpāyayad apy asādhvī
lebhe gatiṁ dhātry-ucitāṁ tato ’nyaṁ
kaṁ vā dayāluṁ śaraṇaṁ vrajema

Alas, how shall I take shelter of one more merciful than He who granted the position of mother to a she-demon [Pūtanā] although she was unfaithful and she prepared deadly poison to be sucked from her breast?
(SB 3.2.23)

When Mukunda Datta recited these verses Pundarika Vidyanidhi completely intoxicated with prema. Pundarika Vidyanidhi started to rock his body and horripilation followed by perspiration, rolling down on the ground crying, Ha! Krsna. Ha! Krsna. Gadadhara Pandit witnessed this and understood the concealment of prema in the heart of Pundarika Vidyanidhi. Now, Gadadhara Pandit realised what he saw yesterday was Pundarika Vidyanidhi’s external activity.

Gadadhara Pandit then returned to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Again, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked Gadadhara Pandit, “Have you seen sadhu or not” ? Gadadhara Pandit was embarrassed and acknowledged his mistake, “I have committed offence to the lotus feet of Pundarika Vidyanidhi”.

In the commentary of Bhaktivedanta Prabhupad, it is explained that there are two kinds. Visayi prai and Vaishanava prai. Vaishanava prai means externally look like Vaishanava but completely enjoying sense gratification. Visayi prai – looks like materialistic person but their heart completely absorbed in Krsna prema. So, we have to carefully understand these two words in our Vaishanava philosophy.

Vaishanava prai people who is externally showing his Vaishanva activities but internally absorb with material sense gratification. Stupid nonsense. Reject those who are Vaishanava prai.

Visayi prai, externally looks like materialistic person but his heart is completely absorbed in Krsna prema. As like Raya Ramananda and most of Mahaprabhu’s associates who are externally grhasta but their hearts completely absorbed in Krsna prema.

As Gadadhara Pandit had committed offence at the lotus feet of Pundarika Vidyanidhi, Gadadhara Pandit seek advice from Chaitanya Mahaprabhu about this matter. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu advised Gadadhara Pandit to take diksa from Pundarika Vidyanidhi. Gadadhara Pandit then became Pundarika Vidyanidhi’s disciple.
So, we should very careful about who is Vaishanava. Never criticise Vaishanava. Give respect to Vaishanava. Always firm faith towards Guru, Vaishanava ad chant Holy Names.

In this material world, there are some imitators because this is the nature of Kali Yuga. This is the nature of the material world. Be very careful. Some people give Harikatha and also shedding tears by showing many external activities of prema. However, in actual fact there is nothing in their heart, no prema. Only pratishtha. It is for showing the audience that they are great Vaishanavas. One song of Bhaktivinoda Thakur, ….. Lampa jampa means showing the external activities. Give up these things.

After taking shelter of Pundarika Vidyanidhi, Gadadhara Pandit returned and always associate with Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Always staying with Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has two kinds of lilas. One is grhasta-lila (householder pastime) and another is sanyassi-lila (renounce pastime). Twenty-four years of grhasta-lila and His last twenty-four years of sanyassi-lila.

So, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu when He was in Navadvip dhama for twenty-four years, Gadadhara Pandit was staying with Him. When Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took sanyas, Gadadhara Pandit also thought that he must take sanyas. Gadadhara Pandit took sanyas and resides it Jagannath Puri. Gadadhara Pandit took Kstera sanyas, a vow to remain in a particular pilgrimage site (tirtha stana) till the end of life.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu promised Sacimata that He will always remain in Jagannath Puri. This is because when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took sanyas, He came to the house off Advaita Acarya in Santipura. That is where Sacimata and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu met. Sacimata told Chaitanya Mahaprabhu not to stay long in Vrndavan, “This is because Vrndavan is very far from Navadvip and I cannot get Your message. So You may stay in Jagannath Puri. Every year during Rathayatra, all the devotees will to go to Jagannath Puri. So Your message can be taken from Jagannath Puri. If You leave in Vrndavan dhama I cannot receive Your message”.

So according to matr bhakta siromani, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu have much love and affection for His mother, Sacidevi. Hence, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had promised to reside in Jagannath Puri.

In this way, Gadadhara Pandit realised that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had taken vow to live in Jagannath Puri. This is why Gandadhara Pandit decided to take kstera sanyas in Jagannath Puri.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was staying in Gambira. Gadadhara Pandit was staying in Tota-Gopinath. Tota means garden. The garden of Gopinath. For this regard, the name of the place is called Tota-Gopinath. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu used to go to Tota-Gopinath from Gambira to discuss Srimad Bhagavata katha with Gadadhara Pandit. Gurudev said, at that time Gadadhara Pandit gave class everyday on Srimad Bhagavatam. Gadadhara Pandit mostly discussed about Brahrama-gita, Gopi-gita Venu-gita and Yugala-gita.

Especially when Gadadhara Pandit gave beautiful explainations, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and all the devotees were completely intoxicated. This is because Gadadhara Pandit is Srimati Radhika Herself. So, when She explained all these tattvas Herself all hearts become overjoyed. For this reason, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu travels from Gambira to Tota-Gopinath to meet Gadadhara Pandit and to listen to Gadadhara Pandit’s discourse on Srimad Bhagavatam.

One day, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Gadadhara Pandit were walking along the beach. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said to Gadadhara Pandit, “I want to give you something very valuable. Would you like it ?”. Gadadhara Pandit replied, “Whatever You give I would have to accept because You are my heart and soul”. Chaitanya Mahaprabu then manifested one very beautiful deity from the sand called, Gopinath and placed Thakurji on Gadadhara Pandit’s hands. Gadadhara Pandit worships this very beautiful self-manifested Thakurji. Now, the Thakurji is in sitting position as we have seen but when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu manifested this Thakurji from the sand, Thakurji was in standing position playing His flute.

It is said that when Gadadhara Pandit became old and in a bank of separation mood he was unable to stand up to offer the garland at the neck of Gopinath. That is why Gopinath sat down Himself on the asana to receive the garland as Gadadhara Pandit is the nearest and dearest of Thakurji. Gurudev explained it this way.

When Krishna appeared in the assembly of the gopis. Meaning, Krishna disappeared from the rasa dance. Then the gopis assembled along the riverbank of Yamuna singing the songs that is called Gopi-gita. After Gopi-gita, Krishna appeared in the assembly of the gopis. The gopis provided an asana for Krishna to sit comfortably. This is the mood of Gurudev. Accoding to Gurudev, Krishna is sitting here surrounded by the gopis. Krishna then tried to pacify the gopis’ separation and anger mood. In the same way, Gadadhara Pandit serves to Gopinath.

During that time, most of the devotees that used to go to Jagannath Puri stayed with Gadadhara Pandit who also took care of them. Chaitanya Bhagavat stated that Nityananda Prabhu and Advaita Acarya will visit Gadadhara Pandit first during their visit to Jagannath Puri because Gadadhara Pandit is the nearest and dearest to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. For this regards, all devotees will make Gadadhara Pandit as their first port of call whenever they visited Jagannath Puri.

At one time, Nityananda Prabhu and Advaita Acarya brought fragrant rice, Basmati rice which Gadadhara Pandit then cooked and offered to his Thakurji, Gopinath. When Nityananda Prabhu and Advaita Acarya were about to partake Prasad, Chaitanya Mahaprabu appeared, asking Gadadhara Pandit why He wasn’t invited. In fact, Gadadhara Pandit only cooked for Nityananda Prabhu and himself but the Advaita Acarya arrived. Then Mahaprabhu arrived. Gadadhara Pandit only cooked for two persons. However, there is now four persons. It was already midday then.

So, Gadadhara Pandit told Chaitanya Mahaprabu to take Prasad but Mahaprabhu said, “I will take Prasad after you”. However, Gadadhara Pandit insisted, “No! No! No! You take Prasad then I will partake later”. Gadadhara Pandit then served Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu and Advaita Acarya. Prasad became more and more. In this way, there are many lila kathas in Tota-Gopinath, the self-manifested deity.

Around 1992 or 1994, I also remembered Gopinath also have so much love and affection for our guru varga. All our devotees in Jagannanth Puri were doing parikrama. During this time, Gurudev, Srila Trivikrama Maharaj, Srila Vaman Maharaj and also Pramode Puri Maharaj. Also many many other maharajas assembled for the parikrama. All of us were staying in Nilacala Gaudiya Matha as I recalled.

During the night, Gurudev, Srila Vaman Gosvami Maharaj asked Narayan Gosvami Maharaj, “Did you bring some cloth from Mathura” ? Narayan Gosvami Maharaj replied, “Yes, I brought some cloth”. Srila Vaman Goswami Maharaj then said, “Do you know Gopinath came? He told me that He needs some cloth because His cloth is no good. So, you give Me nice cloth”. Srila Vaman Gosvami Maharaj told Narayan Gosvami Maharaj and Trivikrama Maharaj including us devotees nearby of Gopinath’s request.

In the morning, we proceeded to Tota-Gopinath temple. Gurudev offered the cloth for Gopinath and requested that Thakurji to be dressed in this cloth. The pujari agreed and also dressed Thakurji with the given cloth. That time, Gurudev saw how beautiful these things. In this way, Thakurji is asking everything from His pure devotees.

So, Gadadhara Pandit is worshipping Tota-Gopinath. A question may also arise in everybody’s hearts. Gadadhara Pandit was living in Tota-Gopinath. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was residing in Gambira with Swarup Damodara and Raya Ramananda. Some people also asked Gurudev why Gadadhara Pandit doesn’t stay with them.

Gadadhara Pandit always staying with Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Navadvip dhama. Then Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took sanyas and relocated to Jagannatah Puri. Gadadhara Pandit is now living further apart from Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Why? Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took sanyas and so does Gadadhara Pandit. Swarup Damodara also took sanyas and stayed with Chaitanya Mahaprabu. So, why not Gadadhara who is also a sanyassi?
