18 August 2014 – Appearance day of Lord Krsna
Janmastami – the appearance day of Lord Krsna chandra Who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Svayam Bhagavan. In Bhagavad-Gita Krsna also says:
janma karma ca me divyam
evaḿ yo vetti tattvataḥ
tyaktvā dehaḿ punar janma
naiti mām eti so ‘rjuna
One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna. (Bhagavad-gita 4.9)
“My birth and activities are transcendental. One who realises about My transcendental activities, then after his death he will attain perfection, My abode (dhama), and he will never return to this material world“. Krsna said, “One who attains My abode never returns to this material world.“ So in this way Krsna‘s janma, birth, and His activities are transcendental, aprakrta.
aprakrta vastu nahe prakrta-gocara
veda-puranete ei kahe nirantara
“Spiritual substance, aprakrta vastu, is never within the jurisdiction of the material eyes, words or mind. This is always the verdict of the Vedas and Puranas.” (Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 9.194)
This is transcendental things which we cannot comprehend with our material senses. Not possible. However, by the causeless mercy of Guru and Krsna, chanting the Holy Names you will realise about the transcendental things. In Bhagavad-Gita, Krsna said, “Even the atma (soul) does not take birth.“ Na jayate na mriyate. So how possible that Krsna takes birth? Actually this is called lila. He performs sweet lila. Yesterday I told:
manusam deham asritah
“Krsna manifests His eternal humanlike form and performs His pastimes to show mercy to the devotees.” (CC Adi-lila 4.34)
In transcendental world, Goloka Vrndavana, very nice and sweet lilas are going on in this way. That is called nitya-lila. Krsna manifested that same type of lila in this material world with His Yoga-maya.
śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu jīve doyā kori’
swa-pārṣada swīya dhāma saha avatari’
“Out of compassion for the fallen souls, Sri Krisna Caitanya came to this world with His personal associates and divine abode” (Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Saranagati 1)
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura also explained that Caitanya Mahaprabhu means Krsna, He manifested all His dhama(abode), Goloka Vrndavana dhama manifested in this material world, and He performed sweet lila with His associates, parikara. Why? Because if you listen, if you see or glorify His lila, then you will be absorbed in Krsna lila, and after your death you attain The Lord in His abode. In this material world, Srila Sukadeva Gosvami explains, who is happy? Raise your hands. Dukhalayam asasvatam – this material world is called the abode of distress, unhappiness. So where to get the happiness? This is true. All you are intelligent, so try to understand in this way. All of you are searching for happiness because this is the spontaneous nature of the living entities. This is because Lord is called the anandamayi brahman. He is the embodiment of bliss, ananda, and the living entities, suddha jivatma, are also parts and parcels of Lord. The same dharma (nature) in the heart of the living entities. For this regard, the living entities are looking for happiness, sukha. Where do get the sukha, happiness? Who is happy in this material world? Who has no money is not happy. And the one who has money, is he happy? Also, not happy. Dhani kahe maha dhani sukhe. Rich man is thinking, “Who has more money than me? So, maybe he is happy”. Then, that rich man is thinking that the king is happy. Dhani kahe raja sukhe. King says, “No! No! I am not happy. Maharaja is happy”. Maharaja is the one who controls many kings. Maharaja is also saying: “I am not happy. Indra is happy, who is the king of heaven”. Indra kahe, Indra says, “I am not happy. Brahma is happy”. Brahmaji, the creator of this universe, is happy”. Brahmaji says, “I am not happy”. Who is happy? In this material world no one can get the true happiness”.
punar avartino ‘rjuna
mam upetya tu kaunteya
punar janma na vidyate
From the highest planet in the material world down to the lowest, all are places of misery wherein repeated birth and death take place. But one who attains to My abode, O son of Kuntī, never takes birth again. (Bhagavad-gita 8.16)
a-brahma-bhuvanal lokah puna….. Krsna said, “In this material world from small insects, Indra gopa to Brahmaji, all are suffering the three folds of maya, different different kinds of distress.” Where to get the true happiness from? The true happiness is in Goloka Vrndavana, cid-jagat, transcendental world. Vaikuntha-jagat, then after Vaikuntha-jagat there is Ayodhyaloka, Ramaloka, then Dvaraka puri, then Mathura, and then Goloka Vrndavana. That is transcendental world, cid-jagat. So our Vedanta philosophy also explained – “Again and again you practice, Krsna Who is the embodiment of bliss, ananda.” So where is the perfect bliss, ananda? In Bhagavad-dhama. This is true. In this material world, Lord also showed us, though He is beyond material happiness and unhappiness but when He performed His sweet lila in this material world showing to us His “unhappiness”, this is the lila. Crying and crying. Who is not crying? Ramacandra came, and He performed sweet lila also but His whole life is crying. He married Sita-devi, very nice beautiful young wife and returned back from Janak Puri to Ayodhya. Then Kaikeyi, she arranged one thing and He had to go to the forest. He was exiled for14 years to the forest. And in the forest, there are also many kinds of distress, unhappiness and many demons disturbed Sita-devi. In Ramayana, you can read these things. Ravana kidnapped Sita-devi, many things happened. Many lila’s are going on. Crying and crying. Rama-lila – crying.
So who is happy? In Krsna-lila, gopi’s are always crying. In Srimad-Bhagavatam, Krsna performs sweet lila in Vrndavana, and everybody completely intoxicated with Krsna prema.
However, after few years Krsna left Vrndavan, and all the gopi’s are crying. aho vidhata tava na kvacid daya – (Gurudev sung, aho vidhata tava na kvacid daya samyojya maitry). Gopis are saying, “He Vidhata!” – Vidhata means “providence” – “In Your heart there is no smell of mercy. You arranged to us and our beloved Govinda, but before we are mature in love, then you separated. And now we are suffering”. Gopi’s are crying and crying, all are crying.
One song in Bengali also explain, when Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Gaurasundara took sannyasa, then Visnupriya devi felt pangs of separation from Caitanya Mahaprabhu Gaurasundara. So she told, (Gurudev sang – satya yuge cela mami satya narayani…..). The meaning of Visnupriya’s song is: “I am same Lakshmi, and My husband is also the same, Narayana. Bhagavan is One. So, Visnupriya said, “satya yuge cela mami satya narayani” – In Satya Yuga, I was Narayani, the consort of Lord Narayana.” Once Durvasa Rsi came to Vaikuntha and cursed Laksmi-Narayana to go to the material world. So Laksmi-Narayana appeared and suffering this way.
Treta yuge cela mami ….. – Same in Treta yuga, Lord Narayana appeared as Lord Ramacandra and Lakshmi-devi appeared in the form of Sita-devi”. I already told that Rama-lila is very pathetic, crying and crying. Kaikeyi, she arranged this way – whole life crying.
Dvapare yuge cela mami …… – In Dvapara yuga, I was the so-called wife of (inaudible), but my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jatila and Kutila, they made me unchaste. “Oh, Srimati Radhika, She is asoti”. Every time, every day Jatila and Kutila making this way, kut, kut kut, kut. Always kut, kut, kut, kut, kut. Kutila means nagging. Looking at faults. Jatila and Kutilaals made me unchaste.
Kali yuge hola mami Gauranga …. – In Kali yuga, I am the wife of Gaurasundara but something happened. Gaurasundara, He took sannyasa and now, I am alone.” Gurudev sang :
Bhaja gauranga, japo gauranga
Laha gaurangera nama re
Ye jana gauranga bhaje sei amara prana re
Visnupriya devi sang this song. Mahaprabhu Himself gave His own vigaraha to Visnupriya devi. Then, She served to that vigraha, Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Every day, while serving Thakurji, She sang this song. Bhaja gauranga, japo gauranga Laha gaurangera nama re.
What to do in this Kali-yuga? Chant Gaura-nama. Understand ? Gaura-nama is very sweet. Bhaja gauranga, japo gauranga Laha gaurangera nama re Ye jana gauranga bhaje
sei amara prana re. One who chants gaura-nama is my life and soul. This is true. So question may come, why are you chanting, HARE KRSNA HARE KRSNA KRSNA KRSNA HARE HARE/ HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE ? Why aren’t you chanting “Gaura Gaura Gaura Gaura”? Gaura-nama is very sweet Name. Sastra explained in this way.
‘krsna-nama’ kare aparadhera vicara
krsna balile aparadhira na haya vikara
“There are offenses to be considered while chanting the Hare Krsnamantra. Therefore simply by chanting Hare Krsna one does not become ecstatic.” (CC Adi-lila 8.24)
caitanya-nityanande nahi esaba vicara
nama laite prema dena, vahe asrudhara
“But if one only chants, with some slight faith, the holy names of LordCaitanya and Nityananda, very quickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Thus as soon as he chants the Hare Krsna maha-mantra, he feels the ecstasy of love for God.” (CC Adi-lila 8.31)
If you chant Krsna-nama, Hare Krsna maha-mantra, you have to consider the ten offenses of the holy name. Satyam nindam, this way. There are no considerations for chanting the Names of Gaura-Nityananda. If you chant Gaura-nama, then your heart will melt and tears roll down. Gaura-nama is very sweet. So why are we chanting Krsna-nama? Why we are chanting ?
Caitanya Mahaprabhu is our Guru. We have to follow the instruction of Gurupada. Who is our original Guru? Sacinandana Gaurahari. Mahaprabhu Himself told. And also maha-mantra is the yuga dharma, Hare Krsna maha mantra. Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali. Every yuga has a specific maha-mantra. Kali-yuga maha-mantra is:
HARE KRSNA HARE KRSNA
KRSNA KRSNA HARE HARE
HARE RAMA HARE RAMA
RAMA RAMA HARE HARE
Upanisads very clearly explain, this Kali yuga maha-mantra consists of 16 names and 32 syllables. And Mahaprabhu also gave the instructions.
Harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
Kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha
“For spiritual progress in this Age of Kali, there is no alternative, there is no alternative, there is no alternative to the holy name, the holy name, the holy name of the Lord.” (CC Adi-lila 7.76)
Mahaprabhu Himself instructed His followers, “ama-prati sneha thake sabakara …..” – Mahaprabhu Himself told, “If you really love Me, you have to follow My instructions”. What is the instruction? Chant the maha-mantra.
So try to understand in this way, Mahaprabhu is our original Guru. So Mahaprabhu says in this way, “ama-prati sneha thake sabakara”. If you really love Me, if you really love your Guru, what do you do ? You have to follow the instructions of your Guru. Otherwise, it is guru-avajna, dishonour to guru. Guru says, you have to follow. You have to follow the instructions of Gurupada-padma. So Mahaprabhu told very humbly:
Sona Sona Nityananda, Sona Haridas, Sarvatra Amar Ajgna Koro Ha Prokash, Proti Ghare Ghare Gia Koro Ei Bikshe, Bolo Krishna, Bhaja Krishna, Koro Krishna Siksha
“Oh hear me Nityananda, Hear me, Hear me Haridas, Everywhere you simply spread my order. Go from house to house and preach. Speak only about Krishna, Worship only Krishna and teach only about Krishna”.
Mahaprabhu told, “He Nityananda, He Advaita Acarya, Haridasa!” Sona sona Nityananda sona Haridas….. Ajgna means this is My instruction, strict order. Proti ghare ghare gia koro ei biksha – you go from house to house, village to village, city to city, country to country, everywhere. Go and beg: “Oh my brother, oh my sister, please, everybody chant Hare Krsna maha-mantra.
And Mahaprabhu also told, “Prithvi te ache nagar adi gram sarvatra prachar hobe mor naam”. Mahaprabhu Himself told. “One day My name will be preached all over the world. Everybody will chant The Holy Names.” Prithvi te ache nagar adi gram sarvatra prachar hobe mor naam.
So we have to follow the instruction of Gurupada-padma, Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Chaste lady follows the instructions of her husband. Mahaprabhu Himself said, “You have to follow the instructions of your husband.” So who is our husband? Govinda Krsna. He is called jagat-pati, Jagannath. Do you understand? Jagat-pati, pati means “husband”, jagat means “universal”. Who is our real pati? Jagannatha, Krsna, Govinda, Caitanya Mahaprabhu. If you don’t follow the instructions of jagat pati Krsna, then you are unchaste, asati. Do you understand? If you don’t understand, tell me, because this is very important. Otherwise, you will be misguided by the sahajiya. If you go to Radha-kunda and other places they are saying:
Nitai gaura radhe shyam, hare krsna hare rama.
This is not bona fide mantra. They are saying: “Oh my Gurudeva got this mantra from dream.” Dream is not evidence. Then everybody will say, “Oh my Gurudeva also got this dream”. So, the whole sastra will be what ? Dream. Dream is not evidence. Understand ? Sahajiya, babaji sampradaya saying this mantra, others also saying ‘nitai gaura radhe shyam, hare krsna hare rama. “Oh we are giving respect to everybody. Nitai Gaura, Radhe Syama, japo Hare Krsna Hare Rama”.
This is not perfect. So Mahaprabhu saying this way, ama-prati sneha thake sabakara. Mahaprabhu very humbly said, “If you really love Me, only chant the holy names and preach The Holy Names to them.”
So for this regard we are chanting maha-mantra, not always chanting gaura-nama. You can chant, because love and affection you can chant but this maha-mantra is very important. You take japa mala and chant.
This is maha-mantra. Yo mantra sva guru. Jiva Gosvamipad in His Sandarbha also explains: “Mantra means guru, guru means mantra”. You are chanting guru-mantra. That means Gurudeva himself is there. Mantra-atisthati devata is there, that means the presiding devata of the mantra is there.
So now, coming in this way, Krsna manifested in this Kali yuga in three forms, nama, vigraha, and svarūpa. Nama – we are chanting Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.
This is called sabda-brahma, transcendental sound. When you chant krsna-nama, that means Krsna Himself is there.
namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-shaktis tatrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalah etadrishi tava kripa bhagavan mamapi durdaivam idrisham ihajani nanuragaha
“O my Lord, Your holy name alone can render all benediction to living beings, and thus You have hundreds and millions of names like Krishna and Govinda. In these transcendental names You have invested all Your transcendental energies. There are not even hard and fast rules for chanting these names. O my Lord, out of kindness You enable us to easily approach You by Your holy names, but I am so unfortunate that I have no attraction for them.” (Sri Siksastaka, verse 2)
Mahaprabhu is saying, Lord invested all His potency, sakti, in His holy names. Chant Holy Names. Nama is very powerful. Chant the holy names with firm faith because in this Kali-yuga, Lord manifested in the form of The Holy Names. Vigraha, the Deity, is also non-different from Krsna. This vigraha is not wood or metal. I tell very nice beautiful story to illustrate this.
Once, one king engaged one brahmana to worship his Thakurji, Narayana vigraha. Vishnu vigraha. In King’s own temple, so his servants and brahmanas every day worship the Thakurji. There is one rule in that, every day early in the morning king used to come to the temple and offer the garland to Thakurji. Very nice beautiful garland. And at night time, when Thakurji went to take rest, that time that garland, prasadi mala, remnants of the garland is offered to the king. In this way, a few years are going on.
One day, the king informed his brahmanas, “Tonight I cannot come because tonight I am very busy with my duties.” So pujari is thinking: “Okay, every day I offer the remnants of the garland to the king, so maybe today I can take this prasad”. Who does not want to take Thakurji’s remnants? Understand this. And that garland also very beautiful and attractive. That is called royal garland. Long and very big. If you go to Delhi, one garland like this costs maybe 2 or 3 thousand rupees, you cannot believe. Understand ? 50 pounds for one garland. Very big big. Ordinary garland, 100 Rupees. 50 Rupees. I don’t know. This type of garland maybe 50 Rupees (gesturing to his own garland – everybody laughing). In Ramana Biharij Thakurji Gaudiya matha you will need a special garland, big big. You think Maharaj speaking too much, no. Those garlands are very very expensive. Ordinary garland also cost 500 Rupees but if you need the garland from Thakurji’s neck to His knees, as like Vaijayanti mala, 3000 – 4000 Rupees also, very expensive. So you can imagine, who is king and offers the garland, so you can imagine how much it costs. I don’t know. If I tell you, you would think that Maharaj is speaking too much, you cannot believe but that garland must be 10,000 Rupees. There are many different different kinds of arts because he is king. He serves very nice beautiful garland for Thakurji. That is called rajakiya seva, the royal service.
So pujari thinking, “Today is the best opportunity. Today I must take this sweet Thakurji’s garland”. So about after 9 o’clock, 9 P.M., then the temple is about to close. The pujari took Thakurji’s garland and put on his own neck. In the meantime, king’s servant came and knocked the door. “He pujari, the king is coming!” What to do now? Very quickly he took of the garland and again offered to Thakurji. Because he cannot give his remnants to the king. So that time, he again offered to Thakurji. The king has come. And again opened the door. Then the king saw Thakurji and offered stava stuti, did pranam and again pujari offered Thakurji remnants to the king. The king is very happy. Today, the king took the smell of the garland, special fragrance coming, sweet fragrance coming. And king is very happy, he thought, “Today, Lord Visnu must have accepted my offering”. Very happy. After offering stava-stuti the king returned to his palace and met with his queen and glorified the garland, remnants of Thakurji. And king also offered this garland, Visnu remnants garland to the queen. The queen smelled the garland and told: “Yes, this is true what you saying. Today, Lord Visnu, our devata, Thakurji must have accepted our offering, very sweet fragrance coming”. Then suddenly the queen saw one long white hair around the garland. Then the queen asked the king, “How this long hair is coming here?” Our sastra is saying that hair will be always pure when it is connected to the body, but when hair is disconnected from the body, that hair is called impure, apavitra. Try to understand, our Vedic sastra say in this way. If the water touch to hair, you should not offer that water to Lord.
So the queen asked, “Where is this white hair coming from?” Lord Visnu’s hair is not white. The king said, “Yes yes, this is true, just few days before when I was in Vrndavan, just I’m checking and brought very nice beautiful Thakurji’s hair, very nice curly hair. And completely what ? Blackish. So how possible this white hair has come here?” This white hair must be from our pujari brahmana, because his hair are white. My choti also white hair (Gurudev and devotees laughing). This hair must be of our pujari because his hair is white. He probably took Thakurji’s remnants. Maybe he took himself before offering or after he took.” Then king asked, “How possible? Our pujari, priest is very honest person. It is impossible before offering to Thakurji he put the garland on his neck”. Then the queen told: “Must be that after the puja he put the garland on his neck”. Then the queen told, “It must be after puja then he took”. Then king said, “It is also impossible. Why ? When pujari opened the door, I was in front of Thakurji. and I saw that garland on the neck Thakurji and pujari in front of me and took the remnants and gave to me. As usually, in the same way”. Then the queen told, “No, you have to investigate”. Then king called the pujari, and pujari’s body start to shake, and heart pulse very high.
The king asked: “He pujari! Where is this white hair from? Your white hair ?” Pujari is afraid, he knows: “If I say this is mine and that I gave my own remnants to him, maybe the king will cut my head.” Then pujari afraid and just he told, ”Oh this white hair is from Thakurji”. Then the queen asked “How possible? Lord has no white hair. Especially Lord Visnu. Lord Visnu has no white hair. How is that possible? In which sastra ? Call the brahmanas. Call all the panditas!” All they were looking in Srimad-Bhagavatam, Vedas, Puranas, Upanisads, where is written that Lord Visnu has white hair? Any sastra ? They could not find out. They said, “No! This hair must belong to that brahmana”. Brahmana told, “No, this hair belongs to Lord Visnu”.
Then the king told: “Okay. Tomorrow early in the morning during the mangala arati I will go and check Lord Visnu if He has white hair or not”. The pujari told: “Okay, you come and check”. Then all night long the pujari held the lotus feet of Lord Visnu, “He Lord Visnu, twenty years, thirty years I serve Your lotus feet, and now I am going to be punished. Is this the fruit of Your service?” Crying and crying. Holds the lotus feet of Lord Visnu, “He Lord Visnu, You know that I did some mistake, You know my faults, everything. Please, save me, save me”. Lord Visnu told: “He pujari, don’t worry. You are honest. In Bhagavad-Gita I also explain: “What my pure devotee says, that is true”. Pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati. “He Arjuna, you take vow – whatever My devotee says, that is absolutely truth. If I say, maybe not. Whatever my devotee says, that is the truth. And I always keep my devotee’s promise”. So Lord Visnu told: “He pujari, don’t worry, I will save you. I am Bhagavan, and you are My servant, you are completely surrendered to Me. I will save you, don’t worry”.
Then after mangala arati the king looked at Lord Visnu’s hair (taking one torchlight maybe – joking). Looking for Lord Visnu’s white hair. Looking, looking, looking here and there. Then Lord – He can do everything. Gatan-agatan patiyasi yogamaya, inconceivable potency is there. Understand ? What did I said ? Gatan-agatan patiyasi yogamaya. Lord’s one potency that is called inconceivable potency. Acintya sakti is there. Then king saw one big white hair in the back of the Thakurji’s hair, big and long. That time the king thought: “Oh maybe pujari is very clever, maybe he took his white hair and put that on Thakurji.” So the king pulled that white hair to check if this is true or ordinary hair. Then what happen ? Blood coming. King, “Oh , this hair is real!” And that place is completely full of blood. Then the king became afraid, “What happened? Blood coming from Thakurji?” If you by force take the hair then blood coming. Then king began to pray in front of Thakurji, “He My God, He Lord Narayana, please save me, forgive me. I committed offense at Your lotus feet. My pujari, what he said, this is true. But I had some doubts. O my Lord, please save me, please.”
Then Lord Visnu told, “O My king, listen. That white hair was not mine. That was your pujari’s hair. And now that white hair you pulled, that belongs to Me but listen. I always protect My devotee. For this regard, I manifested this white hair.” Then the king asked: “Why the brahmanas and panditas could not find out that the Lord has white hair?” Then Lord Visnu told, “This is My Yoga-maya, therefore the brahmanas could not find out My white hair. Look into Harivamsa Purana. And in Srimad-Bhagavatam also some slokas saying this way.”
Srimad-Bhagavatam in some slokas also saying in this way, when the demon disturb Prithivi devi, and Prithivi completely full of sinful activities of demons, then Prthivi devi manifested in the form of Go mata, cow, and she came in front of demigods and demigoddesses, and asked them, “Please, save me! I cannot tolerate the demons’ sinful activities. Please, save me”. Then all the demigods and demigoddesses prayed to Lord Brahma, and then all the demigods and demigoddesses together with Brahmaji came on the beach of Ksira Samudra, the Milk Ocean. That time Lord Visnu was taking rest on His bed of Ananta sajya. And Brahmaji doing many stava-stuti. Harivamsa Purana also explain in this way. Brahmaji along with the other demigods and demigoddesses prayed to Lord Visnu, “He Prabhu, please, wake up, jago yoga nidra. Please, save Prithivi devi. Prithivi is completely full of sinful activities of demons. He Prabhu, please save Prithivi devi. She cannot tolerate the sinful activities of the demons”.
In Srimad Bhagavad-Gita, Krsna says:
Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata
Abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srjamyaham
Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, Odescendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion – at that I descend Myself. (BG 4.7)
Paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskritam
Dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge
In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium. (BG 4.8)
In Srimad Bhagavad-Gita Krsna says: “When the demons disturb the sadhus, commit many kinds of sinful activities, especially when they destroy the varnasrama dharma, that time He comes and He kill the demons, and reestablish the varnasrama dharma.”
Lord descended from Goloka Vrndavana, this is the reason. Very clearly in Bhagavad-Gita explained.
paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge
“In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium.” (BG 4.8)
That time Lord just smiled and in front of Brahmaji and all the demigods and demigoddesses, Lord Visnu took out two hair from His head – one is white, and another is black. White hair is the personification of Baladeva Prabhu, and the black hair is the personification of Krsna. Then Lord Visnu told, “My master, Goloka pati Krsna, soon He will appear in Prithivi Devi, in the material world, and He will kill the demons and reestablish varnasrama dharma. Krsna-Balarama will come.” Harivamsa Purana very clearly explained.
Lord Visnu said “So who says that I don’t have white hair?” Srimad-Bhagavatam also stated, that time Lord Visnu pulled put two hair – one is white and another black. The personification of Krsna and Balaraama. “Krsna-Balarama will soon appear and reestablish the varnasrama dharma and kill the demons. This is My sastra, Veda, Purana, Upanisad explained”.
Another significance is that Lord Visnu will kill the demons very easily. As like your white hair, you can very easily pull out. When our one or two hairs white, then very easy to take out. And when everything is completely white, you cannot remove (Gurudeva laughed). When one or two hairs starting to appear white, very easy to remove them, but when all become white, then you need to shave once in a month (again laughing sweetly J ). So that means that Lord Visnu pulled out the hair in order to show in this way that He is Bhagavan Visnu, and for Him killing the demons is very easy. Understand? Visnu-cakra in His hand. Very quickly and easy it can cut demons’ head.
So in the same way Lord Visnu told, “He king, listen. By the influence of My Yoga-maya your pandita’s couldn’t find out that I have white hair. And, I am this vigraha.” Vigraha means – “I am direct personification of My svarūpa”. Thakurji means Thakurji Himself. Baddha-jivas are contaminated by maya , therefore you are thinking that this is wood or metal, but this is not true. Vigraha is self-manifested, svayam-rūpa. Vigraha naya dami saksad vrajendra nandana. Mahaprabhu told, “You are not only this vigraha. You are the direct manifestation of Lord, saksad Bhagavan.” Try to understand in this way. Srila Sanatana Gosvamipad also quarreled with Madana-Mohana vigraha.
Srila Sanatana Gosvamipad worshiped Madana-Mohana Thakurji every day. And offering completely dry chapatti. No butter, no salt, nothing. One day, Madana-Mohana Thakurji told, “Sanatana, I am a small boy. My throat is very soft. I cannot eat this dry chapatti.” (Srila Gurudeva explains, in Vraja language this called angati and explained the process of making this kind of chapatti, mixture of flour and water only and put in fire and completely burn that time offer to Thakurji). This chapatti is very difficult to chew. You can break your teeth. If you go to Madana-Mohana, still that bhoga is being offered there by the pujaris. So Madana-Mohana told, “Sanatana, give me a little bit of salt.” How much love and affection Thakurji has. Madana-Mohana told, “Sanatana, give me a little bit salt”. Who is Jagat pati, Jagannath, now He is begging from Sanatana. This is called love, prema. Prema-bhiksa, Begging for love. Then loving quarrel comes. So much love and affection. Sanatana Gosvamipad told, “Madana-Mohana, today You are asking for salt, maybe next day You will ask for butter, Basmati rice, different different sabji. I cannot serve to You. I am completely renounced person, babaji. If You want to stay with me, You have to eat this dry chapatti. Otherwise, if You don’t like, You can go to Your house in Nandagram, I know Your father Nanda Maharaja has lakhs of cows, so there are many kinds of milk products. So You can go there.”
But Thakurji Madana-Mohana told, “No, no, Sanatana, I will not go anywhere, I will stay with you”. Then Sanatana Gosvamipad told, “If You stay with me, then You have to take this angati, dry chapatti without salt.” Then Thakurji told, “He Sanatana, what to do? I have to stay with you, but I cannot eat. How long will I be hungry? OK! I will arrange by myself.” Then Sanatana told: “Okay, You can arrange for Yourself”.
In the palace temple then the Thakurji seva was arranged and every day raja bhoga, royal service with ghee, paneer and everythings. And another way to serve Thakurji, Thakurji seva is.. we are going to Vraja Mandala Parikrama, to one place to Lokanatha Goswami’s bhajana and sadhana place, that is called Khadira vana. Lokanath Gosvami worshiped his Thakurji, Radha-Vinoda. Very beautiful Thakurji. Lokanath Goswami day and night chanting.
Thakurji seva. Vigraha seva. Vigraha is the direct manifestation of Lord. Sad-cid-ananda vigraha. When prema will come, then you will see, Thakurji will ask to you.
During midnight, Thakurji asked, “Lokanath, tonight I performed so much rasa-dance with the gopis. Gopis, they are very crooked. This night they made me to dance so much. I became completely mad. Gopis said, “Krsna, dance, dance, dance, dance”.
Radha nache krsna nache nache gopi gan
Man mere vana gaia re sakhi pavana vrndavan
Vrajavasis are singing this song. When Krsna plays the flute, everyone starts to dance. Why? Govindavenu dhani, the sound of Govinda’s flute, is very powerful. Srila Sukadeva Gosvamipad told in Srimad-Bhagavatam. In the beginning of the rasa-lila, when Krsna plays the flute, then all the gopis came out of their houses. All gopis are thinking, “Krsna, He only calls me”. Because venu-dani, the sound of the flute, only one sound is coming, do you know? Klim, the sound from the Gayatri-mantra. Klim Krsna, Klim. But this sound “klim” what is this? “Radhe”! the sound enters the ears of Srimati Radhika, and She thinks: “Krsna is calling only for Me”. “Radhe”. When the same ‘klim’ enters the ears of Lalita-devi, “Lalite”, “Candravali”, “Bhadra”, all they are going. All gopis think that: “Krsna is only calling for me”. They [the gopis] didn’t see each other. They were completely absorbed with Krsna. Krsna-anuraga, deep attachment to Krsna. All they are running side by side, but they didn’t see who is on their left or right side.
So now, coming in this way, when they arrived on the bank of the river Yamuna under the banyan tree, Krsna also joked with them, swagatam vo maha-bhaga priyam kim karavani. “He gopis, how will I serve to you? How can I serve to you?” Then the gopis became very upse,: “First, You call us, and then You asked “How to serve to you?” what does that mean?”
[For instance] You called me: “Maharaja, come to my house at midday and take prasad”. Then I come and knock at your door. Then you open the door and ask: “Maharaj, why have you come here?” I am thinking: “Today is very nice prasadam, I did not take the breakfast, but when I came to your house and knocked the door, just half door you opened and said: “Maharaj, why have you come?” What answer will I give? “I have come to take darshan of your lotus feet”. What can be my answer? (laughing)
In the same way, Krsna called all the gopis, many slokas explained in this way. I can speak all night. Then the gopis became very upset. Krsna gave many instructions: “Return back, I am brahmacari, perfect brahmacari”. Krsna told. “You are very nice beautiful tender young wives of others, go back to your houses”. Many joking in this way. Then after that Krsna performs very sweet lila, rasa-lila with the gopis. That time Vrajavasis sing ‘Radha Nache Krsna Nache Nache Gopi Gan man mere vana gaia re sakhi pavana vrndavan’.
So now, coming in this way, Lokanath Gosvamipad serves his Thakurji, Radha-Vinoda. So Radha-Vinoda in the midnight told to Lokanath Gosvami – he was sleeping and chanting Hare Krsna Hare Krsna – then Thakurji came: “Lokanath, Lokanath!” But Lokanath chanting Hare Krsna Hare Krsna. But Thakurji tried to wake Lokanatha Gosvami up, “Lokanath, Lokanath.” Then Lokanath Gosvami woke up: “Oh, Thakurji coming!” Saksad Vigraha coming from the altar and coming to Lokanatha Gosvami’s chest, you cannot believe, and also touch his chin: “Lokanath, Lokanath”. Don’t think mundane things. I am enacting this lila, but this is true. You cannot believe. Thakurji told, “Lokanath, tonight gopis made me so much dancing. So much pain in my feet now. Lokanath, whole night I cannot sleep. Please, massage me.” Lokanath Gosvami kept his japa-mala and began massaging the lotus feet of his Thakurji Radha-Vinoda.
Just I remember when Gurudeva (Gurudev said with choking voice as he remembered param-Gurudev and uttered, ‘Gurudev’) was in Mathura taking rest, every day when he went to take rest, we have to massage his feet. We did this with some oil on his head and the sole of his feet. Sometimes there was no electricity, so for whole night fanning. Especially at this time, June-July. Just I remember Guru seva.
So now Lokanath massages the lotus feet of his Thakurji. Then after few minutes Thakurji told: “Lokanath, today is very hot, please fan Me”. And that was midnight, maybe 1 am or 2 am. Lokanath Gosvami took some soft leaves, as like banyan leaves or asata, and then very gently fanning and chanting, “Govinda Damodara Madhaveti (Gurudev singing)”. In this way Lokanatha dasa Gosvami serves his Thakurji, fans with the leaves. Thakurji is sleeping. After few minutes Thakurji told: “Lokanath, today I am very hungry. I want to eat something.” 2.30am. Radha-Vinoda told to Lokanath: “I am hungry. Prepare some prasad”. Midnight Lokanath dasa Gosvami prepared very nice beautiful prasadam, maybe kachoris or puris, in Vraja they are very important. And maybe potato sabji with tomato. Oh, now Caturmasya, not to discuss about tomato.
Sometimes we also discuss, tomato will not give bhakti, bhakti will give harinam (Gurudeva begins to joke J ). So much quarreling with tomato. I have the evidence. One day in Mathura 50 rupees for tomato, then Premananda Prabhu asked Gurudev: “Stop tomato!” Then Gurudev: “Okay, Caturmasya – no tomatoes!” Now devotees are like that: “Ha, Gurudev told: “Don’t take tomato””. And Gurudev also in one lecture told: “If you want my mood, don’t take tomatoes”. Very heavy. Because some devotees are thinking of tomatoes: “Gurudev, tomato tomato”, then Gurudev gave very heavy chastisement: “If you want to take my mood, if you want bhakti, then don’t eat tomatoes during the Caturmasya”. “Okay” (laughing). But Bhakti Hari vilasa not written about tomato. I have twenty years evidence of tomato. Now devotees still they take tomatoees, in many temples they also eat tomatos, they cannot stop (laughs). When Gurudev was physically present, then many devotees in Delhi and Mathura temple also taking tomatoes during Caturmasya. In 2010, Gurudev told you like you take, if you don’t like don’t take. Okay, I will not discuss further, I am not also to quarrel or make disturbance. Today also in Kesavji Gaudiya Math some brahmacaris are taking tomato, some not. And they are quarreling to tomato: “Tomato will not give bhakti”. You tell them :”Chant harinama”, and they are chanting: “Tomato tomato tomato”. But if you don’t take tomato physically, but in mind always absorbed, that means you are taking. And one who criticizes the ladies is actually associating with them. Understand? One who always tells that ladies are like this or that, it means he is always absorbed in the ladies. Srila Bhaktivedanta Prabhupad explains that he will go to hell. Opposite way, because you are absorbed with it. “Chant the holy names”, but they: “Tomato will not give bhakti, tomato will not give nothing”. (joking)
Okay, I come back. Lokanath dasa Gosvami prepared very nice aloo tomato (laughing again). Aloo sabji and also ghee. Thakurji likes, and Thakurji also likes a little bit chili. Western people don’t like, but Vrajavasis take chilli. Ghee, tomato, and chili. Huh! Very nice beautiful. If you just see, then saliva coming, and then you may forget Gurudeva’s instruction (jokes J ).
Lokanath dasa Gosvami offered this to Thakurji in the midnight. Before we discussed how Sanatana Gosvami told: “I cannot serve to You, go to Nanda Gaon”. And Lokanath dasa Gosvami what is saying? What Thakurji is saying, Lokanatha dasa Gosvami is preparing. Two kinds of service – one is loving quarrel, and another is another type of service also. Vigraha means this way. It is the direct manifestation of the Lord. This Giriraj (in the temple), don’t think that this is just stone. It is Thakurji. When your servitude mood comes, then you will understand. Brahma Samhita explain in this way. When prema comes, then Thakurji will ask. Now it is different. Now you are offering with salt or no salt, Thakurji doesn’t ask. Because no prema. But when prema, love will come, then Thakurji will ask: “Give more and more and more”.
So Thakur seva, Govinda seva, I explained, in this Kali-yuga Lord manifested in three forms: nama, vigraha, and His svarupa, He Himself manifested. If you chant the holy names, you will realise. So in this Kali-yuga Lord manifested in three forms – nama-rupe, Mahaprabhu Himself told: “Saci mata, in this Kali-yuga I appear in three forms: My nama, My vigraha, and My svarupa”. Mahaprabhu came in Gauridasa Pandita’s house. Devadi deva gauracandra gaurdasa mandire. Gauridasa Pandita is the disciple of Nityananda Prabhu, but he has so much love and affection with Gaurasundara. Gaura-Nityananda is his heart and soul. Though his diksa guru is Nityananda Prabhu, he has so much love and affection with Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Because Nityananda Prabhu loves Gaurasundara, and Gaurasundara loves Nityananda. So don’t discriminate: “Oh, I am the disciple of Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, he is the disciple of that guru, that guru, that guru.” Guru avajna will come, stupind nonsense. Bhakti will never come. Guru loves to whom, you love to him. This is the process. You understand ?
So Gauridasa Pandita has so much love and affection with Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Because Niatyananda Prabhu loves Gaurasundara, and Gaurasundara loves Niatyananda. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to his house, and he served very nicely for three days. After three days Nimai told: “Gauridasa, I have to return back to My home. My wife is there. My servant is there, and My old mother, Saci-devi is there. I am grhasta. I have to return back. I am grhastha, so how long can I stay in your house?” Renounced person no problem, he can stay there, but grhastha should not stay in another householders house for long time. So Nimai told: “Gauridasa, I have to return back”, then Gauridasa Pandit very humbly told: “Prabhu, please, stay one day more, one day more”. In this way 7 days passed, and Gauridasa Pandit did not let Him to come back to Mayapur.
Then Mahaprabhu told: “Gauridasa, listen. I give you My one vigraha so that you can serve, and this vigraha is non-different from Me”. “Prabhu, okay.” “But you like Me or vigraha?” “I like You”. Then vigraha began to walk. “Thakurji, where are You going?” Then Gauridasa Pandit returned back the Thakurji and put on the altar, then Mahaprabhu start to go. Sometimes Thakurji is walking ansd sometimes Caitanya Mahaprabhu is walking. [Gauridasa Pandit] “Prabhu, where are You going?” So sometimes Thakurji is going, and sometimes Caitanya Mahaprabhu is going. So this is the proof: nama, vigraha, and svarupa. This is the direct manifestation of Lord. So vigraha seva, bhagavat-seva is very important.
