Sri Bhagavat Saptah 4th day (part 1)

Today is the fourth day of the Srimad Bhagavat Saptah.

After the Govardhana dharan-lila, Sukadeva Gosvamipada told so many sweet lilas about Krsna.

He spoke about Krsna’s topmost lila, rasa-lila-katha, the super excellent and topmost lila.

Krsna told the gopis: “I will fulfill all your desires”, when He stole their clothes, in a lila called vastra-haran-lila because the gopis performed hard austerities, called katyayani-vrata. At that time, Krsna was six years old.

Katyayani maha-maye maha yogini adhisvari nanda-gopa-sutam devi patim me kuru te namah (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.22.4)

“He Katyayani, he maha-maya, yoga-maya, give us blessings so that the son of Nanda Maharaj will become our beloved”.

Nitya-siddha-gopis (eternally perfect gopis) like Radha, Lalita, Vishaka, Rupa Manjari did not perform katyayani-vrata. Only sadhana-siddha-gopis (gopis who attained perfection by practising sadhana bhakti), some sadhana-siddha gopis, muni-cari, sruti-cari, observed katyayani-vrata.

So, in our guru-parampara, or guru-varga, no one observed katyayani-vrata. Especially as we perform Kartika-vrata, Radha-vrata or urja-vrata (Radharani’s vrata), Gurudeva told us there is no need to perform katyayani-vrata. We have already observed Kartika-vrata. One of Srimati Radharani’s name is Urjesvari, urja means power, strength; all power comes from Srimati Radhika. So, by following radha-vrata, kartik-vrata, urja-vrata, there is no need to follow katyayani-vrata.

Because our istadevi is Srimati Radhika.

mad-isa-nathatve vraja-vipina-chandram vraja-vane

svarim tan-nathatve tad-atula-sakhitve tu lalitam

visakham siksali-vitarana-gurutve priya-saro-

girindrau tat-preksa-lalita-rati-datve smara mana

“O mind, always remember Vrndavan-candra Sri Krishna as the prana-natha of my swamini Sri Radhika, VrndavanesvariSrimati Radhika as his mistress or my swamini, Sri Lalita as the peerless friend of my svamini, Sri Visakha as the siksa-guru in instructing all the gopis in making arrangements of Sri yugala seva and Radha kunda and Giriraj Govardhana as those who grant darsana of Sri Radha-Krishna and bestow sublime rati for their lotus feet.”

(Manah Siksa 9)

Raghunath Das Gosvami in Manah Siksa explains that our istadevi is Srimati Radhika, so after followingradha-vrata, kartik-vrata, urja-vrata, we don’t need to follow katyayani-vrata.

But in the Srimad Bhagavatam, Sukadeva Gosvamipada also explains how the sadhana-siddha-gopis performed katyayani-vrata, how on the last day they also called all the other gopis, Radha, Lalita, Visakha, and how on that day Krsna stole their clothes. This is called vastra-haran-lila-katha.

There are many teachings (in this lila), all lilas are there. There are so many reasons why Krsna stole the clothes of the gopis.

Some lilas of Krsna are extraordinary and beyond our material conception. Many people don’t know krsna-tattva, radha-tattva, gopi-tattva and sometimes they criticize Krsna: “Oh, Krsna stole the clothes of the gopis, why did He do this?” They have a mundane conception. For this reason, they argue in this way, but Krsna is called rasika-shekara, He is the topmost rasika. And He relishes different kinds of rasa.

Krsna also gave a blessing to the gopis:

saṅkalpo viditaḥ sādhvyo
 bhavatīnāṁ mad-arcanam 
mayānumoditaḥ so ’sau
 satyo bhavitum arhati

“O saintly girls, I understand that your real motive in this austerity has been to worship Me. That intent of yours is approved of by Me, and indeed it must come to pass.”

(SB 10.22.25)

na mayy āveśita-dhiyāṁ
 kāmaḥ kāmāya kalpate 
bharjitā kvathitā dhānāḥ
 prāyo bījāya neśate

“The desire of those who fix their minds on Me does not lead to the material desire for sense gratification, just as barleycorns burned by the sun and then cooked can no longer grow into new sprouts.

One who is completely absorbed in Me will be freed from all kinds of lust”.

(SB 10.22.26)

Just like if one person boils the paddy (rice with husk) or wheat, and again plants it in the ground, that paddy or wheat will never sprout.

So Krsna gave the blessing to all of the gopis in this way: “Now I’m giving a blessing to you, in your heart, there will never exist any kind of material lust. All your lust will be destroyed” because someone who has material lust is not qualified to enter into the rasa dance. For this reason, Krsna makes a platform for the gopis to enter into the rasa dance.

Some of those gopis are nitya-siddha, eternal associates of Krsna. And some are sadhana-siddha; they chanted gopal-mantra andkrsna-mantra for many years, thousands and millions of years. So, how is it possible for them to have lust in their hearts? Impossible.Nothing.But, for loka-siksa, to teach others, Krsna gives this blessing to the gopis:

na mayy āveśita-dhiyāṁ
 kāmaḥ kāmāya kalpate
bharjitā kvathitā dhānāḥ
 prāyo bījāya neśate

“For one who is completely absorbed in Me, their heart is neat and clean, and lust will never manifest, just like boiled paddy or wheat if it is again put under the earth, will never sprout.”

(SB 10.22.26)

Krsna has two kinds of conjugal lila, one is called vilasa and the other is called samprayoga. Vilasa means laughing, joking, and different kinds of activities. That is called vilasa. Samprayoga means directly meeting together. That kind of lila is called samprayoga lila.

So, when Krsna was six years old, He performed vastra-harana-lila; He stole the clothes of the gopis. And at that time, the gopis were also very small, some were two years, four years, or six years old, not more than this.

Can you imagine, a two-year-old girl or a four or six-year-old girl with lust? They do not even know if they are male or female! If you go to the countryside, the six or ten-year-old girls and boys are completely naked, jumping everywhere, playing. They don’t know if they are male or female, they don’t have any idea, so how is it possible for these children to have lust?

So Krsna, when He was six years old and he stole the clothes of the gopis, in the vastra-harana-lila, told them: “I will give you one blessing, one benediction, and next year I will fulfil all your desires” because they had performed katyayani-vrata.

But on that same day, the following year, when Krsna was seven years old, Indra, who is the King of heaven, disturbed the Vrajavasis by sending so many storms, hurricanes, tsunamis and other kinds of suffering. So, for this reason, Krsna lifted Giriraja Govardhana, and that year, Krsna did not fulfil the desires of the gopis. The gopi-rasa-dance was not possible that year.

Then in the following year, when Krsna was eight years old, He performed the rasa-lila with the gopis. One name of the rasa-lila is ‘kama-vijay-lila’. Kama-vijay means “the conquerer of lust”; one who conquers lust.

No one can conquer lust. Even small insects, from the ants to Brahma, all of them are dancing in lust.

Although Brahma, Siva, Narada are mukta-purusa, liberated people, this is true, they are doing this lila. They also are influenced by kama, lust.

They are mukta-purusa. In their heart there is no lust, this is true, but they are showing in their lila, how lust is a very dangerous thing, and how it makes all the living entities dance.

Brahmaji ran towards his daughter Sandhya. And at that time, Marici’s six sons were laughing, and Brahma cursed them.

Then they were born as the first six sons of Devaki and were killed by Kamsa.

Sometimes you cannot understand the activities of a mukta-purusa, a liberated person. Sometimes we commit an offence.

Sivaji also ran behind Mohini Murti. After Samudra Manthan(the churning of the ocean of milk), the demigods and demons ran away when the poison appeared. At that time, Sivaji came and drank the poison. Again, they churned the ocean, and nectar appeared.

At that time, Lord Visnu cheated the demons and gave the nectar to demigods. This is called mohini-mohan lila, when Krsna manifested the form of a very nice and beautiful mohini, the form of a beautiful young lady. Everyone was intoxicated by her beauty.

And at that time, when the Lord manifested the form of Mohini svarupa and distributed the nectar, Sivaji was not there. Later all the demigods and demigoddesses told him, “Oh, the Lord manifested Himself as a very nice, beautiful young lady”. Then Sivaji said to Lord Visnu: “I want to see your Mohini murti”.

Because this is our nature, who does not want to see a very nice, beautiful, young girl’s face? Who does not want?

Visvamitra gave up his dhyana, meditation, when Menaka, who is the best dancer in the heavenly planets, came in front of him and just rang her bangles and ankle bells. Visvamitra’s meditation was completely destroyed. Visvamitra looked into her eyes, then he caught the hand of Menaka and started to dance with her.

So, Sivaji said to Lord Visnu: “Prabhu, I want to see your Mohini murti. Because You are male, how did You manifest Your female form, I want to see Your female form. “What is your beautiful female form like? I want to see it.”

Lord Visnu replied: “Mahadeva, no, no, no. Don’t ask this question. Stop now. Don’t request this from me.”

daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī
mama māyā duratyayā
mām eva ye prapadyante
māyām etāṁ taranti te

“This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.”

(Bg 7.14)

My maya, Mohini, no one can conquer her. Hey Mahadeva, you are my pure devotee. So don’t desire to see my Mohini murti…”But Sivaji told Him: “Prabhu, I am a yogi, I am the controller of my senses. So, please, please, please, I want to see your Mohini murti”. Then Krsna said: “Okay, you have some pride in your heart, that you are a great yogi, the controller of your senses. Okay, I will destroy your pride”.

Then Krsna again manifested the same Mohini svarupa, a very nice, beautiful young girl, no more than sixteen years old. The Lord, his limbs and body are all very beautiful and attractive. Eyes, nose, hands, legs; everything is very beautiful and attractive.

madhuram madhuram akhilam madhuram

madhuradi pater akhilam madhuram.

nayanam madhuram hasitam madhuram

nasanam madhuram valitam madhuram

chalitam madhuram bhramitam madhuram

madhuradi pater akhilam madhuram

Again the Lord manifested the beautiful young girl form, and that madhuri (sweetness) was super excellent.

But what is the real beauty of ladies? What’s the difference? All beauty is the same, but one special type of beauty is chastity. Who does not want to be intoxicated by the chastity of a lady? This is very confidential.

Visvanatha Cakravartipada said, “I am just mentioning it, you may have understood or not, that Krsna’s beauty is unparalleled, and when He manifested the form of a beautiful young girl, at that time who could control his senses?” Then Krsna manifested the very nice, beautiful Mohini svarupa, with a slender waist. I will not tell you too much, but the Bhagavatam explains, Sukadeva Gosvami can speak, I cannot speak.

At that time, Sivaji completely forgot that “I am a yogi”. When Krsna manifested His Mohini svarupa with His slender waist and was just moving a little bit, all of Sivaji’s yoga and tapasya (austerities) were finished.

Krsna is very expert in dancing. Whose dancing can compare with the dancing of Krsna? So while Krsna, in His Mohini svarupa, was dancing, in this way and that way, Sivaji was looking, and his body started to shake.

Then Sivaji ran towards Him, to embrace ‘Her’. But Bhagavan, who as antaryami knows everything in the heart of a devotee, was running and running as Sivaji started running and running to try to catch Him.

Then seven times He ran round and round the whole universe, and Sivaji was also chasing ‘Her’, and his daur kaupin (underwear) fell down. He was completely bewildered by these lusty desires; how to catch the Mohini svarupa. He forgot that Visnu manifested the Mohini svarupa and that “I am a yogi”. He was completely intoxicated with lust, running behind Mohini.

Sivaji had so much sweat dripping from his body, so much perspiration was coming, but still, he was running behind ‘Her’, just about to catch her . . . . . Then again they were in the same place and Krsna, as Visnu, manifested His four-armed form, and smiled at him. And Sivaji was astonished: “What? What am I seeing?? Is this a dream? This is Visnu, not a lady!!”

So, no one can control lust. So, in these lilas, Brahma, Siva and even Narada,

mukta maha-purusas are teaching us that we cannot control lust.

Part 2

Narada Muni has so many lilas. I could speak about them all day. He teaches us that we cannot control lust. I will tell you one lila about Narada Rsi.

Once Narada Rsi performed hard austerities, then the presiding deity of lust, Kamadeva, he manifested in the form of a very nice, beautiful young girl and appeared in front of Narada Rsi. Then Narada Rsi finished his austerities and opened his eyes. Then Kamadeva paid his obeisances to Narada Rsi: “Hey Narada, don’t give me a curse even though I had come here to disturb your austerities! Don’t give me a curse. I know now that you have conquered lust!” Then Narada Rsi became very proud: “I have conquered lust!” This pride came; “I am a maha yogi!”

Then Narada Rsi came to Brahma loka, Satya loka, and told his father Brahma: “I conquered lust!! Cupid, Kamadeva, was completely defeated! I am a ‘pukka’ brahmacari, perfect brahmacari, who has conquered lust!”, then Brahmaji said: “Oh my son, Narada, do not be proud. I am your father and I cannot conquer lust. How is it possible that you can conquer it? Actually, Kamadeva cheated you… Even Indra, Chandra, they cannot conquer lust.”

In Srimad Bhagavatam, Indra also manifested the form of Gautama Rsi and tried to disturb Gautama Rsi’s wife (Ahalya). Indra and Chandra (moon), both came.

“Even Indra, Chandra, they cannot conquer lust, they cannot get out of the clutches of Kamadeva. So how is it possible that you can conquer lust? I am your father, I cannot conquer lust. So don´t be proud, you were cheated by Kamadeva…”

Then Narada Rsi thought: “Oh, maybe my father did not conquer lust, but that does not mean that I cannot. If my father is illiterate, I can become literate. Why not? It is not necessarily the case that because my father is illiterate, I will also be illiterate. This is not necessarily true.

This was the conception of Narada Rsi: “My father does not understand my heart…”. He disobeyed his father, Brahma. Guror avajna (he neglected the instructions of his guru, his father)Then he came to Kailas, to see Sivaji, his older brother and said: “Sivaji, my older brother, I conquered lust! Kamadeva completely fell down at my lotus feet and said: ‘He Narada! You conquered me!’

And at that time, Sivaji told him: “Oh my brother, Narada, do not be proud. Your father and I, we cannot conquer lust. Even Indra, Candra and other demigods also, they cannot conquer lust. How is it possible that you can conquer lust? O my brother, if you have conquered lust, I believe you, but keep it in your heart, don’t tell anybody and don’t become proud about this.”

Then Narada Rsi became very angry: “Father cannot conquer lust. You cannot conquer lust, does that mean I cannot conquer lust? How is that possible? I have conquered lust!”

Sivaji again pacified Narada: “Hey Narada! Listen to my advice, you are my younger brother. Only Lord Visnu conquered lust. No one can conquer lust. Don’t be proud of this. Give up this subject, stop talking about it. Turn over the page. Go to another page. Stop here.”

Someone who has so much false ego does not want to listen to anybody else’s advice. This is 100% true.

So, Narada Rsi had so much false ego: “I conquered lust! I conquered lust! I conquered lust!”

So Narada Rsi went to Vaikuntha Dhama, Narayana Loka. Lord Visnu was sitting and Narada Rsi came. Lord Visnu always gives respect to Narada Rsi.

If Narada Rsi comes to Vaikuntha Dhamano one can stop him. He doesn´t need ID ora passport. Security automatically opened the gate for him. Chalo( Go).

Sometimes I joke, when the four Kumaras went to Vaikuntha and at that time Jaya and Vijaya stopped them at the gate, they said: “Hey, don’t go! Let’s see your passport, security, ID…” (Although it is a fact that the four Kumaras were stopped, Jaya and Vijaya did not really ask for their passports)

But with Narada Rsi, Lord Visnu always allows him to enter. Lord Visnu said, “In any circumstance, at midday, midnight, at any time; if Narada Rsi comes, no one can stop him”. Lord Visnu has so much love and affection for Narada Rsi.

Just like our Gurudeva. Gurudeva told Navina Krsna Brahmacari (Sripad BV Madhava Maharaj’s name when he was a brahmacari): “If Subal Sakha comes, never stop him!” ( Subal Sakha was Sripad BV Vana Maharaj’s name when he was a brahmacari). If Gurudeva was sick, sometimes his door was closed. If I came, sometimes he (Navina Krsna Brahmacari) said: “Gurudeva is sick.” So if I didn’t come for one or two days, Gurudeva chastised me: “Why did you not come?” Gurudeva said, “In any circumstance, you must come!” I am just remembering that Gurudeva also never stopped me. At any time I could go to his room.

The last time that Gurudeva was sick, at Govardhana, sometimes the sannyasis and brahmacaris were not allowed to enter his room, but if I went, no one could stop me. If I knocked on the door, his servants would have to open it. Otherwise, if I told him that I could not come because someone stopped me, Gurudeva became so upset with them. For this reason, no one stopped me.

So, his name is Narada. ‘Narada’ means ‘who can never be stopped by anybody in any circumstance’. ‘Na’ means ‘not’, and ‘rad’ means ‘stop’. No one can stop him. So his name is Na-rad, this is the meaning of Narada.

So, when Narada Rsi came, Lord Visnu was very pleased. Narada Rsi sat in front of Lord Visnu, who was sitting in a higherplace. Narada Rsi said “Oh Prabhu, can I tell something to You?” He had so much eagerness, so much pride. Bhagavanis sarvajna (all-knowing), antaryami (situated in everyone’s heart), He knows everything. He knows what is in your heart, but still Lord Visnu said: “Yes, what do you want to say?” Narada Rsi said: “Prabhu, I performed hard austerities then Kamadeva, who is also known as cupid, came to me and told me that I had conquered lust and that he had been defeated! So I have conquered lust!!”

Then Lord Visnu laughed. He was laughing, “Ha! Ha! Ha! Good! Good! Good! Nice! Nice, my son! You are a nice devotee! You conquered lust!”, and he patted him on his back: “Good!” Then Narada Rsi’s chest became even more puffed up: “YES! My father and my brother were envious of me! Now Visnu Himself is supporting me. I conquered lust!”

This is Lord Visnu’s duty; if any pride comes, the Lord will always do an operation, surgery. There are two kinds of heart surgery. Open surgery, direct, when the chest is opened, and nowadays with modern science, with a lens, electronic, microsurgery, by-pass surgery. Before they cut open your chest, took out the heart, and searched to find the blockage. Nowadays there is no need to open yourheart, that is called by-pass surgery.

So, Sri Visnu was thinking “I need to operate onhis heart with by-pass surgery, not directly, butindirectly, because his heart has a big blockage.So much prideis there”. So, Lord Visnu glorified Narada: “You are so nice, you are My best devotee! Thank you, thank you. Stay with Me for a few days, I am very happy that you have conquered lust!”

Then, Narada Rsi became very proud again, “Lord Visnu glorified me. My father and my brother are envious and jealous so they don’t believe I conquered lust. Lord Visnu is so liberal,He believes that I conquered lust!”

Then one day, early in the morning, Lord Visnu told Narada: “Please come with Me, let’s go for a morning walk”. Narada Rsi felt very proud: “Yes, I have to go with You on Your morning walk”.

So Lord Visnu and Narada Rsi were walking and walking and walking, for maybe one or two hours in a forest, a deep forest. Then after one or two hours, Narada Rsi and Visnu sat under a tree. Then, Lord Visnu said “Narada, todayI am very thirsty. Bring some water. Find out where there is a well or a pond, and bring some water for me”.

So, Narada Rsi went. Lord Visnu was alone and Narada Rsi was looking, searching for a pond or a well. Then, Lord Visnu with his maya, manifested a very nice, beautiful pond. In that pond, there was very nice, fresh water. Crystal blue water.

Many kinds of birds were swimming in the water, like ducks and swans. There were many kinds of flowers with blossom, and a sweet fragrance. Birds were chirping and honey bees were humming over the flowers. A sweet breeze was there, as if it was vasanta, spring.

So, Narada Rsi, step by step, entered into the pond. He thought “First I will drink some water, then I will take some to Prabhu, Lord Visnu”.

At the same time, by Krsna’s maya, a very nice, beautiful young lady came to that place to get some water.

She had nice eyes, nice hands and legs. Her hands and fingers were very nice and beautiful, like ladies’ fingers, sweet and soft with reddish colour nail polish. Her hair was very nice and beautiful. It was so long that it reached below her knees. Very curly hair. She used her sidelong glance and displayed different kinds of ladies’ activities, stri uschitta bhava , like smiling.

Narada Rsi was just going to drink the water, but all of the water fell from his hands. His body started to shake. He was just looking. His eyes became completely widened: “Who is she?!” She just smiled, and with her romantic sidelong glance, completely captivated him.

How does prema come? Love comes first by eye contact, nayanamilan. Srimati Radhika said “pahilehi rāga nayana-bhaṅge bhela”-“At first our prema came from our eyes”, Ramananda Samvada. (CC Madhya 8.194)

Narada was completely captivated by her. Narada Rsi forgot everything, that he had come to fetch some water for Lord Visnu. He totally forgot.

Narada Rsi said “Oh, are you a brahmacarini? She said “Yes, and are you a brahmacari?” Narada said “Yes!” She is Maya, she said “Yes, for such a long time I was looking for my husband. You are the perfect husband for me”. Narada said “Yes, yes, I was also looking for many years, I wanted a perfect wife. Now you, you are the perfect wife for me”.

Always remember Srimad Bhagavad-Gita:

daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī

mama māyā duratyayā

mām eva ye prapadyante

māyām etāṁ taranti te

“This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.”

(Bhagavad-Gita 7.14)

No one can conquer Krsna’s maya. Narada Rsi forgot everything. He married her and they had many children.

Then Lord Visnu laughed “Look, proud, proud! He conquered lust Ha! Ha! Ha!”

Still, Narada Rsi was thinking that he had conquered lust, but he had completely fallen down. Then Visnu thought: “I have to teach him a lesson”. And again, by Krsna’s maya, a big flood came a tsunami flood.

Everywhere there was so much water. Narada Rsi saw that his wife was floating one way in the big flood. His sons and daughters were crying “Papa! Papa!” His wife was crying: “Please save me, save me!” All of his things were floating here and there. Narada was thinking “How can I save my children, sons, daughters and wife?”

If you see with your own eyes, your wife going into the strong stream of the water and your son also floating in that strong stream, how will you catch them? How will you save them? What will you do?

Then Narada Rsi started to cry “Hey Visnu, please save my wife! Please save my son! Please save my daughter! Please save my wealth!” He was crying and crying.

In the meantime, Lord Visnu appeared and said “Hey Narada, why are you crying? What happened?” Narada said “Prabhu, my wife, my son, my daughter . . . . what do to now, Prabhu? Prabhu please save me, save me!”

Lord Visnu said “Narada, I sent you to bring water for Me! Where is my water? Can’t you remember?” Narada thought“Oh, this is true…”

Then again, by the influence of yogamaya, there was no water, no wife, no sons, no daughter . . . . and Narada Rsi saw that he was back in the same place as he was before, with the Lord, under the tree. Narada said: “Oh my God, what happened, am I dreaming?” Then Narada realized: “Prabhu, thank You, dandavat. Now I have realized that no one can conquer lust”.

Part 3

Why am I saying this? Rasa lila is called kama-vijay lila. Only Lord Visnu, Bhagavan, can conquer lust. No one can conquer lust. For Brahma, Siva, Narada, Indra, Candra, and for any human being it is not possible. Who can conquer lust? No one can conquer lust, only Lord Visnu, he conquers lust. So before describing rasa lila, Sukadeva Goswami asks who is going to perform the rasa dance? Bhagavan. Only Bhagavan can perform the rasa dance. For human beings, it is not possible. For any demigod or demigoddess, it is not possible to take part in rasa lila. Even the incarnations of Bhagavan (e.g. Lord Rama and Lord Narayana) never perform the rasa dance. Only Vrajendra Nandana Syamasundara, that is Svayam Bhagavan, can perform rasa lila.

ete cāṁśa-kalāḥ puṁsaḥ
 kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam
indrāri-vyākulaṁ lokaṁ
 mṛḍayanti yuge yuge

“All of the above-mentioned incarnations are either plenary portions or portions of the plenary portions of the Lord, but Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the original Personality of Godhead. All of them appear on planets whenever there is a disturbance created by the atheists. The Lord incarnates to protect the theists.”

(SB 1.3.28)

Svayam Bhagavan he performs rasa lila. What can you say about any human being? What can you say about any demigods or demigoddesses? What can you say about others? Brahma, Siva, Narada? They cannot perform the rasa dance. Only Vrajendra Nandana Syamasundara, that is Svayam Bhagavan Vrajendra Nandana Syamasundara, performs the rasa dance.

Why am I saying this? This is called ‘making the platform’. Who is qualified to hear rasa-lila? This is the question. If you can control your lust, then you are qualified to listen to rasa-lila, otherwise not. Be very careful.

Nowadays ‘stupid nonsense’ persons are thinking ‘I am a mukta maha purusa’. No, No, you are not a mukta maha purusa( a great, liberated soul who is not influenced by maya, the material energy). If you are a mukta maha purusabe very careful. Brahma, Siva, Narada, although they are mukta maha purusa they are teaching us that no one can conquer lust. Karmis, jnanisand yogis can’t, what to speak of others.

And who is a qualified speaker? Because two people are needed; srota (who listens) and vakta (speaker). Speaker and audience. What type of speaker can explain rasa lila katha?

Only Sukadeva Goswami pada. He is called akumara brahmacari. Sukadeva Goswami pada he was akumara brahmacari. That means that from his boyhood he was celibate. So he is saying “Badaraniuvaca. Srimad Bhagavatam “Sri Badarani uvaca… ‘Badarani’means the son of Vyasadeva Goswami. Sukadeva Goswami is the speaker of rasa lila katha. So it is saying “Badarani uvaca . ..akumara brahmacari, someone who has been completely celibate for his whole life is qualified to speak rasa lila katha, that means both srota and vakta. Vakta means ‘speaker’ and srota means ‘audience’. If you cannot control your senses, you will lose everything.

And who is the audience? Pariksit Maharaj. Who is Pariksit Maharaj? Gopi bhava prapta. One who has attained gopi-bhava.Sanatana Goswami in his Brhad Bhagavatamrtaexplains that Pariksit Maharaj was gopi-bhava prapta, a very high-class exalted devotee. If someone is a brahmacari like Sukadeva Gosvami, or is like Pariksit Maharaj, who attained gopi bhava, then he is qualified to hear rasa lila katha.

Sanatana Goswami in Brhad Bhagavatamrtam explained in this way, that Pariksit Maharaj attained gopi-bhava. Gopi bhava prapta. Not so easy. People are saying “Maharaj I want to hear about gopi bhava, rasa lila katha”.I am not qualified, and you are not qualified to listen also. I am not Sukadeva Goswami and you are not Pariksit Maharaj. Simple way. Just because you have some curiosity I will speak something about the rasa lila, but not deeply and confidentially. Just to satisfy your curiosity, I will briefly explain what is rasa lila and I will not go deep, because sastra says:

ascharya ca vakta kusalasja srota

The vakta, speaker, should be just like Sukadeva Goswami. Srota means audience, they should be like Maharaj Pariksit. Then you can speak and listen. Why I am saying this? Because in the Srimad Bhagavatam, Sukadeva Goswami, akumara brahmacari, he explained how the gopis’ forms are beautiful and attractive. We cannot explain this, as you will have a material conception, because you are looking at material girls and at material this, this, and this. Naked ‘stupid nonsense’ things. Automatically these ‘naked stupid nonsense things’ will come to your mind. You will have a mundane conception, because especially in western countries everywhere there are naked pictures, naked statues, naked cinema. This is true or false? If I speak the same katha (as Sukadeva Goswami) you will say “Maharaj is speaking this rasa lila katha, the gopis are also the same as those material girls. Offences will come, aparadha will come.

Do you understand? Be careful when you listen and careful when you speak. Both srota andvakta will commit an offenseotherwise, aparadha, and then you will lose bhakti. So as far as my ability allows, I will try to speak in a very simple way. I will try to speak rasa lila katha just to purify my tongue a little bit, but I will not speak deeply. If I speak deeply then your mind will be contaminated and my mind will be contaminated and then both of us will go to hell. Both guru and disciple will go to hell. Chalo.

So, be very careful. Time is over. Just I am making a platform. How we should speak about rasa lila katha. Still I am not entering into the subject, because this is just the introduction.If you read Visvanath Cakravati pada’s commentaries you will understand.So, be very careful. A platform should be first made to speak about rasa lila katha. This is just the introduction. If you read Visvanath Cakravati pada’s commentaries you will understand. Actually, I am speaking all of the points he commented on at the beginning of rasa lila katha along with what Jiva Goswami gave in his Vaisnava Tosani, and what Sridhara Goswami pada wrote.

First, we have to know what ‘rasa lila’ is. Rasa means what? “Rasa asvadateiti rasa”.Rasa means mellows. What is the definition of rasa? If anybody knows, raise your hands.No (no one raises their hands). So how is it possible that you will listen to rasa lila katha?

Rasa means:

vyatitya bhavana-vartma yas camatkara-bhara-bhu

hrdi sattvojjvale badham svadate sa raso matah

“That which has an extraordinary taste and is experienced only in the heart which is illuminated by suddha-sattva or the appearance of the sthayibhava, is called rasa. The experience of rasa is far more intense than that of rati and for this reason, when rasa is experienced, it bypasses the individual perception of vibhava, vyabhicari bhava and so on.”

(Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu 2.5.132, Srila Rupa Goswami pada)

‘Vyatitya bhavana-vartma yas’-that which is beyond our material conception.‘Vyatitya bhavana-vartma yas camatkara-bhara-bhu’- so much excellent taste will come into your heart. ‘vyatitya bhavana-vartma yascamatkara-bhara-bhu hrdi sattvojjvale badham svadate sa raso matah’.

And the heart will be completely neat and clean, just like crystal, with no spot of material desire. No material desires, no lust, nothing. Just like crystal, spotless, neat and clean. Suddha sattva (pure transcendental goodness). The heart is completely nirvikara (no transformation), with no manifestation of lust or anger. When the heart is never influenced by lust this is called “nirvikara citta”, just like a baby. If any young girl is naked in front of a small baby, the baby’s mind is never disturbed. This is called nirvikara citta.

Just like Sukadeva Goswami. When he was born from the womb of his mother and he went to the forest, on the way some young girls were completely naked, swimming in the water. Sukadeva Goswami saw them but his mind was never disturbed, nirvikara citta, and the young girl’s minds were not disturbed.

So rasa lila means this:

vyatitya bhavana-vartma yas camatkara-bhara-bhu

hrdi sattvojjvale badham svadate sa raso matah

The heart is completely neat and clean, and on the platform of sandhini, samvit and hladini are coming. That type of heart is a qualified heart. Someone with that type of heart will be qualified to relish the mellows.

If sthayi bhava comes then four ingredients will come. First one fixed mood (e.g. dasya, sakhya, vatsalya, madhurya), sthayi bhava, will come, then vibhava, anubhava, sattvika, vyabichari,alambana, uddipana, asraya alambana, visaya alambana then anubhava, andthen thirty three types of sancari bhava. When all of these ingredients mix together this is called rasa. (seeBhakti Rasamrta Sindhu Bindu by Visvanath Cakravati pada)

So Sukadeva Goswami pada, in the conclusion of rasa lila says:

vikrīḍitaṁ vraja-vadhūbhir idaṁ ca viṣṇoḥ

śraddhānvito ’nuśṛṇuyād atha varṇayed yaḥ

bhaktiṁ parāṁ bhagavati pratilabhya kāmaṁ

hṛd-rogam āśv apahinoty acireṇa dhīraḥ

“Anyone who faithfully hears or describes the Lord’s playful affairs with the young gopīs of Vṛndāvana will attain the Lord’s pure devotional service. Thus he will quickly become sober and conquer lust, the disease of the heart.”

(SB 10.33.39)

If you listen to rasa lila katha, then all your lust will be destroyed, but there is a condition; you have to listen to rasa lila katha from a bonafide guru. What kind of bonafide guru? Not an ordinary guru. The guru should be like Sukadeva Goswami akumara brahmacari, bhagavat parsada deha prapta. He should be such a person, not ordinary, be very careful. There are three types of mahabhagavat, bhagavat parsada dehaprapta, nirduta kasayaand murcita kasaya.

Bhagavat parsada dehaprapta – one who is eternally the associate of the Lord.Nirduta kasaya – one whose heart is completely free from all kinds of material desires. Murcita kasaya – his heart is also neat and clean.

Narada Rsi is the eternal associate of Krsna, Naradiya gopi. He is the first example of Bhagavat parsada dehaprapta. If you get the association of Narada Rsi and listen to rasa lila katha then all of your lust will disappear.

The first sloka says “Sri Badarani uvaca”. ‘Badarani’means the son of Vyasadeva; Sukadeva Goswami. Vyasadeva Goswami spoke the 1st canto of Srimad Bhagavatam up to the 28th chapter of the 10th canto to his son. Then Vyasadeva Goswami completely stopped. He did not speak any more harikatha. Then Sukadeva Goswami said, “Pita, father, I want to listen to more Krsna katha”. Vyasadeva said“My dear son, are you qualified or not to listen to rasa lila katha? Because now I am going to speak rasa lila katha”. The 29th chapter to the 33rd chapter are the five chapters of rasa lila katha that are called panca prana (the five life airs). If the speaker or audience is not qualified to listen to rasa lila katha then their minds will become contaminated.

So for this reason, remember this sloka:

vikriditam vraja-vadhubhir idam ca visnoh

sraddhanvito ‘nusrnuyad atha varnayed yah

bhaktim param bhagavati pratilabhya kamam

hrd-rogam asv apahinoty acirena dhirah

(Srimad Bhagavatam 10.33.39)

“Anusrnuyad” (to follow and listen). Visvanath Cakravati pada explains that this means “Guru mukha anusrnuyad” (to follow and listen to the guru’s instructions) and what kind of guru? A guru who is like Sukadeva Goswami, that type of guru, or like Narada Rsi. You have to listen to rasa lila katha from that type of guru, otherwise, your lust will never be destroyed. Here “anusrnuyad” means “guru mukha ‘nusrnuyad” and guru means bhagavat parsada deha prapta. Narada Rsi or Sukadeva Goswami; if you listen to this type of guru, then your lust will be destroyed. And “sraddhanvito”, sraddha anvito, listen with firm faith. Firm faith is “Do or die”. In this life, I will do bhajana and sadhana.

khanda khanda hai deha yaya yadi pranatabu ami vadane na chadi hari-nama

“Even if my body is cut in pieces, I will never give up harinama.”

(Caitanya Bhagavat, Adi-khanda 16.94)

So, Vyasadeva stopped speaking. Then Vyasadeva said “Hey Sukadeva, listen my son, you have to get a certificate from the father of Sita devi, Janaka Maharaja. He is aptakama (completely free from material desire). Go, if he will give a certificate to you, to say that you are qualified to listen to rasa lila katha, then I will speak it to you”.

Sukadeva Goswami was atmarama, this is true:

sūta uvāca

ātmārāmāś ca munayo

nirgranthā apy urukrame

kurvanty ahaitukīṁ bhaktim

ittham-bhūta-guṇo hariḥ

“Sūta Gosvāmī said: All different varieties of ātmārāmas [those who take pleasure in the ātmā, or spirit self], especially those established on the path of self-realization, though freed from all kinds of material bondage, desire to render unalloyed devotional service unto the Personality of Godhead. This means that the Lord possesses transcendental qualities and therefore can attract everyone, including liberated souls.”

(SB 1.7.10)

Sukadeva said, ‘I was atmarama’…

pariniṣṭhito ’pi nairguṇya


gṛhīta-cetā rājarṣe

ākhyānaṁ yad adhītavān

“O saintly King, I was certainly situated perfectly in transcendence, yet I was still attracted by the delineation of the pastimes of the Lord, who is described by enlightened verses.”

(SB 2.1.9)

Janaka Rsi was aptakama.He was a grhasta king but he was called aptakama. Sukadeva Goswami pada was a brahmacari,“ātmārāmāś ca munayo… Janaka Maharaj he was aptakama, a grhastha, but completely detached from all material things. Generally, mostly we give respect to brahmacaris and sannyasis. Who gives respect to grhastas? No one, but here Vyasadeva says “Go. If you want to hear rasa lila katha, tenth canto 29th chapter, then go to Janaka Maharaj and bring a certificate. You are qualified or not?”

What is the qualification? If your heart is completely nirvikara citta, with no manifestation (of mundane lust). The mind should not be disturbed. Nirvikara citta- this is the main thing. Do you understand? I just gave one example, if a young girl is naked in front of a baby, the baby’s mind is not disturbed. That is called nirvikara citta. A youth’s mind would be disturbed. If your mind is not disturbed, then you havenirvikara citta.Just like Sukadeva Goswami. Sukadeva jivana carita.DifferentPuranas explain, not the Bhagavatam, about the very nice character of Sukadeva Goswami. Vyasadeva said “Oh my son, I know you are a brahmacari. Your heart is completely neat and clean;nirvikara citta, without any lust or anger. This is true, I believe this, but you need a certificate”. Maybe you have the knowledge, an MA or PhD, but you need a certificate from a government, school or college. You need a certificate or stamp; they will not accept knowledge alone.

So Sukadeva Goswami pada went to the courtyard of Janaka Maharaj. Which Janaka? There are many Janaka Maharajs in our sastra. ‘Sriradwaja’ Janaka – Sita’s father. He was a perfect king and renunciate – ‘rajarsi’. So Sukadeva Goswami pada came. Janaka Maharaj was told that Sukadeva Goswami pada had come to take a certificate from him. Then Janaka Maharaj called a big assembly. All of the high-class, exalted devotees came, even Narada Rsi. Brahma, Siva, and Narada, they all came to that assembly house.

There was a big assembly, sabha but Janaka Maharaj was a little bit late in arriving. Janaka Maharaj told his wife, “Express your ladies activities, striuschitta bhava, before the assembly”. In this way, Janaka Maharaj’s wife entered the assembly house just before her husband. Everyone’s eyes were lowered because she was showing her ladies’ activities. Knowingly she was doing this. Her eyes were going this way and that way, and her chest was also moving in this way and that way. Very nice, just like an actress. If you read the books you can understand. It was just like a TV scene. Brahma, Siva, Narada were thinking, “If I see these ladies’ activities maybe my mind will be disturbed… Mostly they just closed their eyes, thinking “Oh my God! What will I do?”

But Sukadeva Goswami, he was just sitting at the back with his eyes open, and his mind was not disturbed. Nothing. Janaka Maharaj noticed all of the audience and also Sukadeva Goswami. At that time Janaka Maharaj gave a certificate. “Yes, Sukadeva you are qualified to listen to rasa lila katha. You are now atmarama and aptakama. Give him a certificate.”

If I tell you more, you will not be able to digest this. Rasa lila katha is not ordinary katha. Rasa katha is not ordinary. Nowadays some are thinking “I am a sannyasi. I am reading this book, this book and that…” but then at night or when no one is looking, what happens? Stupid nonsense! Be very careful. Jiva Goswami pada has written in his Sandarbha that if any desires for material sense gratification come you are not qualified to listen to rasa lila katha, whether you are male or female. He is very strict about this in his Sandarbha. So don’t enter deeply. Just to satisfy your curiosity I am explaining something. Do pranam and listen, and again do pranam.

namo rädhikäyai tvadiya-priyäyai namo ’nanta-liläya deväya tubhyam

namo rädhikäyai tvadiya-priyäyai namo ’nanta-liläya deväya tubhyam

“I do pranams to Srimati Radhika and all of Her girlfriends; Lalita, Visakha and all Herlilas. Listen very carefully;rasa lila kathais not so easy.”

For those who are staying with their girlfriend, boyfriend, wife or husband, how is it possible that they can control their senses if they listen to rasa lila katha? They are thinking that this is the same, equal. “What I am doing with my girlfriend/boyfriend; touching, embracing, this is the same thing.” They will compare it with these things, so how is it possible that they will realize transcendental things? Impossible. Priti sandarbha very clearly explains these things.

Automatically the conception will be there “My wife or girlfriend, she is Radha.I am Krsna. Because Radha-Krsna are embracing and kissing, and the same things we are also doing”. This is one kind of mayavada philosophy (ahangropasana). You are thinking “I am Radha” or “I am Krsna or“My girlfriend is Radha”. This is an offence, aparadha. They are not qualified. Rasa katha is not so easy. Just I am making the platform. Try to understand who is qualified; one whose heart is free from all types of material desire; one who does not have any material desire.

Visvanath Cakravati pada’s commentary on Ujjvala Nilamani explains that that gopis who perform the rasa dance have no ladies’ period. No menstruation. Nothing. They are qualified. These are very confidential things, I am not saying this, this is the commentary of Visvanath Cakravati pada.

You are not reading sastra, but you want to hear rasa lila katha. Read very carefully. Are you qualified or not? Read Priti Sandarbha. Srila Gurudeva taught us to read Priti Sandarbha. When I first came, Srila Gurudeva taught us three Sandarbhas; Tattva Sandarbha, Krsna Sandarbha, and Priti Sandarbha. Without reading Priti Sandarbha you cannot understand rasa lila katha. Nothing. If I speak too much, you will say “Maharaj, you are speaking too much” but I have to speak the truth, otherwise people will become sahajiya.

I have to speak the truth, what our goswamis and Visvanath Cakravati Thakur are saying.BringUjjvala Nilamani grantha and I will show you. It clearly explains about the gopis, how their hearts are neat and clean and how they meet with Krsna. Don’t go deeply into rasa tattva. If you have some curiosity you can read it in a simple way. Don’t go deeper. I am not saying don’t read Ujjvala nilamani, or don’t read rasa lila katha, I am not saying this. You can read, but very carefully, don’t go deep. Read in a simple way. When can you go deeper? When you have realized that your heart is neat and clean, just like the gopis, with no vikara, completely nivikara citta.

Do you understand? Because I am going to speak. I will not go deep, but I just want to speak a few words about rasa lila. Here it is saying “Sri Badarani uvaca”.‘Badarani’ means Sukadeva Goswami. The son of Vyasadeva is called ‘Badarani’.

In the rasa lila, four things are very important. Remember these.

The country, desa. Where is the rasa lila going on? In which desa, which country? England, America, Brazil? Or India, Bombay, Calcutta? No. Vrndavana. Only in Vrndavana is rasa lila performed. Or in Mahaprabhu’s dhama, Navadvip. That is called sankirtana maha rasa lila. Vrndavan dhama’s rasa lila is called gopi rasa lila. Navadvip dhama’s rasa lila is called nama sankirtana rasa lila. Desa.

Kala means ‘time’, or ‘season’. Srimad Bhagavatam’s rasa lila katha is called autumn rasa lila (saradiya rasa lila). Jayadeva Goswami’s Gita Govinda describes the rasa lila that is the spring season rasa lila, vasantika rasa lila. Tomorrow is vasanta pancami.

Another is patra patri – Hero and Heroine. Who is taking part in the rasa lila? The gopis. And what kind of gopis? Not old gopis. Those who are over 30 are not qualified to enter the rasa dance. This is the commentary of Visvanath Cakravati Thakur. If you read it you will be laughing and laughing. Those who are over 30 are not allowed to enter rasa lila, or those who are fat; they are not qualified. Who are qualified? Only very beautiful young girls, who are between the ages of 9 and 14. They are very beautiful and attractive. From their toenails to their hair, everything is very nice, beautiful and attractive, because Krsna is also beautiful. All of the gopis are beautiful, they have the same level of beauty as Krsna. “Yogena yogya yugyate”. A qualified person meets with a similarly qualified person, “Yogena yogya yugyate” according to nyaya darsana, logic. And all of the gopisare very qualified with all kinds of qualities, gunas; sangita vidya, nitya kala, sangita kala… They are very expert in all kinds of Arts. It is not so easy to enter the rasa dance. There are 64 types of Arts; shipa kala vidya.

You can read the commentary of Jiva Goswami. It very clearly explains that the gopis are expert in all the 64 different types of Art – shipakala vidya in both knowledge and practice like sangita vidya – singing, nrtya kala – dance, prema kala – giving pleasure to one’s beloved, randhan kala – the art of cooking. They possess so many other different types of other qualities – gunas. So it is not so easy to enter the rasa dance.

ānanda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhāvitābhis tābhir ya eva nija-rūpatayā kalābhiḥ

“Sri Govinda, who is all-pervading and who exists within the hearts all, resides in His Goloka dhama along with Sri Radha, who is the embodiment of His pleasure potency and the counterpart of His own spiritual form. She is the epitome of transcendental rasa, and is expert in the 64 arts. They are also accompanied by the sakhis, who are an expansion of Sri Radha’s own transcendental body, and who are infused with blissful rasa. I worship that original personality. Sri Govinda.”

(Brahma Samhita 5.37)

Bhaktivinode Thakur sang:

palyadasi kori lalita sundari amare loiya kabe

sri Radhika pade kale milaibe ajna seva samarpibe

“When will beautiful Lalita foster me as her aspiring maidservant?

Then later she will offer me up unto the lotus feet of Srimati Radhika, and will place me entirely at Her disposal for rendering various services according to Her order.”

sri visakha pade sangita sikhibo…

“At the lotus feet of Sri Visakha I will learn music and songs…”

I will learn sangita. Sangita means singing, how to sing. If you expertly learn all kinds of art, then you are qualified to go to the rasa dance. This is the process. Sadhana is that. If you don’t know how to cook, what will you do there when Srimati Radhika says to you “cook for Me…” What will you cook there? If you give too much salt, or not enough salt, or give too much tomato, He will not eat. Sadhana means this; how to learn the proper way to serve Thakurji. How to dress Thakurji. They are expert in all kinds of service. At the stage of sadhana you have to learn all kinds of service, even how to sweep.

yat-kinkarisu bahusah khalu kaku-vani

nityam parasya purusasya sikhanda-mauleh

tasyah kada rasa-nidher vrsabhanu-jayas

tat-keli-kunja-bhavanangana-marjani syam

“O daughter of Vrsabhanu Maharaj, O ocean of rasa! The supreme Bhagavan, the source of all avataras who wears a peacock feather in His hair falls at the feet of your maidservants and propitiates them with many humble and grief-stricken words to be allowed entrance into Your kunja where You engage in playful, amorous pastimes. If only I could become one stick in the broom used by Yoursakhis to clean Your delightful grove, I would consider my life a success.”

If I become one stick of the broom in Seva kunja or Nidhuvana then my life will be successful. All kinds of service you can learn and practice. How to sing, how to cook, how to speak, and how to sit. Some people don’t even want to sit. Some people are sitting with their legs towards us just like cows, with their feet going this way, or monkeys. They don’t know how to give honour to the Lord or to their guru. In front of Thakurji don’t sit in this way, this is called an offence, aparadha. Always sit this way. In front of Thakurji, don’t do this, this is called an offence. In Arcana Dipika32 types of offences are explained. One offence is if you sit in front of Thakurji in this way. This is called an offence. If you stand in front of Thakurji with your hands behind your back, this is also called an offence, aparadha. Fold your hands in front of Thakurji.

First learn these things. Basic things you have to learn. If I do not tell you, you will never learn, and you will become a manjari? Stupid nonsense manjari.

Hey! You don’t know how to sit in front of Thakurji, how to sit in front of guru and vaisnava, and you want to become a manjari? Pagala (mad person).

I remember, once in mangala arati, one brahmacari came, and he was standing in the wrong way. He was a new brahmacari. Gurudeva’s eyes were watching him. “Who is this brahmacari?” After mangala arati… Bam! (I think this means that Srila Narayana Maharaja hit the brahmacari…) “Hey! You don’t know how to stand in front of Thakurji? Not in this way.” You did not see Gurudeva at that time, how he was very strong. If the guru does not teach his disciple the proper way, how will the disciple learn? If you go to school, the teacher’s duty is to give proper instructions to his student. How to sit, how to stand in front of Thakurji. Don’t sit in front of Thakurji (in a certain way, with your feet pointing towards Thakurji), don’t stand in front of Thakurji with your hands behind your back. I sometimes see brahmacari son parikrama in front of Thakurji with their hands behind their backs; this is an offence, aparadha.

Western people cannot understand. If I beat them, they will not understand. Once Gurudeva said, “hiteva pavita”- if you try to purify them they will run away and they will criticize you, “Oh this maharaj is not good”, and they will think that the maharaj who is not speaking about these things is a good maharaj. Stupid nonsense. Try to understand, ‘guru’ means one who is your ever well-wisher. He is called guru and he always speaks the truth. He gives his disciples the perfect teaching.

Remember that rasa lila has four important things:

Desa, Kala, Patra and Patries. Desa means country. Kala means time, season. Patra means those who have joined the rasa dance, the gopis and Patries means Krsna. Beautiful and attractive. Because I want to speak about rasa lila but not deeply because I am not qualified. I am not Sukadeva Goswami but something I will speak.
