Nowadays, there are appearance and disappearance days of Srila Jiva Goswamipad, who is prominent amongst the six Goswamis. I wish to discuss his life history and his compromission. Vaishnave… (inaudible). If we glorify Vaishnav then we will be protected from maya (illusory energy). And our six Goswamis – Sri Rupa, Sanatan, Bhatta Raghunatha, Sri Jiva, Gopala Bhatta, Dasa Raghunatha – they are called the six Goswamis. They also fulfilled all the desires of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu‘s nitya-parikar (eternal associates), Srila Rupa Goswamipad, Sanatana Goswamipad, and also Srila Jiva Goswamipad.

Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu went to Jagannath Puri and Vrndavan. On the way, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu picked up two great personages, Rupa and Sanatan in Ramkeli, Bengal.

Rupa-Sanatan performed bhajan and sadhan along with their brother, Vallabha, who is the father of Jiva Goswamipad. Lord Chaitnaya Mahaprabhu affecionately called Vallabha as Anupama. At that time, Jiva Goswamipad was about six or seven years old. Whilst performing bhajan and sadhan, Anupama was absorbed in Lord Ramacandra. Anupama was advised by their brothers, Rupa and Sanatana that he should perform bhajan and sadhan to Krsna because Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Whereas, Ramacandra is an incarnaion. Therefore, Anupama should perform bhajan and sadhan to Krsna, advised Rupa-Sanatan.

According to the scriptures, there is no difference between Rama and Krsna. However, in rasa-siddhanta, there are some speciality of Krsna.

Sanatan Goswamipad explained further to Anupama that Krsna has sixty-four qualifications. Out of which, four of them are extraordinary – rupa madhurya (His sweet form), lila madhurya (His sweet pastime), prema madhurya (His sweet associates like the gopis, who are very dear to Him) and venu-madhurya (sweet sound vibration of His flute). As for Lord Ramacandra, He is also called marjada-purusottama. Marjada-purusottama means He follows all the rules and regulations of the society.

Krsna is lila-purusottama. He performs sweet lila beyond rules and regulations of the society. This is so, when He performs rasa-lila with His gopis. Especially, when Krsna plays His flute, everybody’s heart is completely intoxicated and starts to dance. Vrajabasis, they are singing “Radha nache Krsna nache nache Gopi gan”.

Rupa-Sanatan informed Anupama, Krsna has four extraordinary qualifications. Krsna is rasa-rasik, rasa-bihari. He performs sweet rasa-lila with the gopis. Ramacandra is very grave, following all the rules and regulations of the society very strictly. So, Rupa Goswamipad and Sanatan Goswamipad instructed their brother, Anupama to perform sadhan and bhajan to Krsna, Krsna bhajan. As a result of the glorification of Krsnacandra by Rupa-Sanatan, Anupama agreed to perform sadhan and bhajan to Krsna.So, he told Rupa-Sanatan, “I will try to perform sadhan and bhajan to Krsna”.

During the night, Anupama’s mind was very disturbed while attempting to meditate on Krsna-lila and Krsna. Time and again, Anupama’s focus was redirected back to his Ista-dev (worshippable Deity), Lord Ramacandra. Hence, Anupama was crying profusely.

In the next morning, Sanatan Gowamipad entered Anupama’s room. Anupama held his brother, Sanatan Goswaipad’s lotus feet informing, “Brother, I cannot perform bhajan-sadhan to Krsna because my Ista-dev is Ramacandra.“ Raghunate carane bechi ache mate …… In Chaitanya Caritamrta, Krsna das Kaviraj Goswami explained, Anupama informed Sanatan Goswamipad, “I completely sold my head to the lotus feet of Ramacandra”. Sanatan Goswamipad replied, “Anupama, you don‘t have to perform bhajan and sadhan to Krsna. Your Ista-dev is Rama. So, you should perform bhajan and sadhan to Rama-Sita”. Jiva Goswamipad’s father, Anupama is one pointed to his Ista-dev, Lord Ramacandra.

The teaching is that when our nishta develops for Guru and Nama, then we will develop our bhajan and sadhan. Nama-nishta is to develop intense chanting of the Holy Names. Nama-nishta, Guru-nishta, Ista-dev-nishta. Nishta means steadiness, one pointed. Then your bhajan and sadhan will developed.

As Jiva Goswamipad was growing up, his father departed from this world. So, Jiva Goswamipad went to live with his paternal family. Subsequently, Jiva Goswamipad met Nityananda Prabhu. As a very intelligent and talented person, Jiva Goswamipad managed to learn all the Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, and all the scriptures in a couple of years. During his association with Nityananda Prabhu, they performed Navadvip dham parikrama. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur glorifies their Navadvip dham parikrama and their conversations. Jiva Goswamipad also received the mercy from Visnupriya Devi, the consort of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. After Navadvip dham parikrama, Nityananda Prabhu told Jiva Goswamipad, “He! Jiva, listen. There is no difference between Navadvip dham and Vrndavan“. The specialty of Navadvip dham is Navadvip candra, Gaurasundar. His dham (holy site) is very merciful and magnanimous. All aparadha, offenses will be destroyed if you go to Navadvip dham.

aradhito nava-vanam vrndavan eva te

naradhito nava-vanam vrndavan eva dure

aradhito dvija-suto vraja-nagaras te

naradhito dvija-suto na taveha krishnah

If you worship the nine islands of Navadvipa, you are actually worshiping Vrndavana and can easily gain entrance into that confidential place. If you don’t worship and take shelter of Navadvipa-dhama, Vrndavana will be very far away from you. If someone will worship dvija-suta (Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu), the son of the Brahmana, Jagannatha Misra, that person will attain vraja-nagara Sri Krsna in Vrndavana. If one worships Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is actually Krsna Himself, in Navadvipa, one is performing complete worship of Krsna. Worshiping Sacinanadana Gaurahari in Navadvipa is as good as worshiping Krsna in Vrndavana. If one does not worship dvija-suta Gaurahari, Lord Krsna will be very far away.

Prabodhananda Sarasvatipad glorifies about Navadvip dham in this way. Aradhito nava-vanam, One who worship Navadvip dham will very easy go to Vrndavan dham. Naradhito nava-vanam, one who does not worship Navadvip dham, by any other method he cannot go to Vrndavan dham. Aradhito dvija-suto, one who worships Sacinandana Gaurahari, one will very easily attain Krsna, who is the beloved of the gopis. The conclusion is that, first take shelter of Navadvip dham and Navadvip candra, Sacinandana Gaurahari. Especially in this Kali-yuga (Age of quarrel and hypocrisy), you have to take shelter of the Lotus Feet of Sacinandana Gaurahari and His abode Navadvip dham. Brahma and Siva, they also committed many offences in Vrndavan lila, Krsna‘s Vrndavan lila. Hence, they came to Navadvip dham, to perform bhajan and sadhan, and all of their offenses were destroyed. Gurudev, “You have to come where?“ (Devotees: “To Navadvip dham“) Gaura dham, Gaura Nama is very saint. So Krsna dasa Kaviraj Goswami explain:

krsna-nama kare aparadhera vicara

krsna balile aparadhira na haya vikara

There are offenses to be considered while chanting the Hare Krsna mantra. Therefore simply by chanting Hare Krsna one does not become ecstatic.

(Sri Caitanya Caritamrta, Adi-lila 8.24)

gaura-nityanande nahi esaba vicara

nama laite prema dana, bahe asrudhara

But if one only chants, with some slight faith, the holy names of Lord Caitanya and Nityananda, very quickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Thus as soon as he chants the Hare Krsna maha-mantra, he feels the ecstasy of love for God.

(Sri Caitanya Caritamrta, Adi-lila, 8.31)

If you chant Krsna-nama:


You have to consider the ten offenses of the Holy Names, dasha-vidha nama-aparadha. The first three are very prominent: satam ninda – First, never criticise any sadhu. Second, never think that Krsna-nama is equal to Siva-nama. Krsna and Krsna-nama is unique and unfathomable. Third, guroravajna, never dishonour Guru and Vaishnavas.

Krsnadasa Kaviraj Goswami explained, gaura-nityanande nahi esaba vicara. As one simply chants Gaura-Nama, one will attain Krsna-prema. Prema will manifest in your heart. Nitai gaura bole‘ nac re amar man. Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur sang one song, “Oh, my mind, always you dance taking the name of Nityananda and Sacinandana Gaurahari.“

Whilst Jiva Goswamipad was performing Navadvip dham parikrama, Nityananda Prabhu told him, “He! Jiva, you have to go to Vrndavan and stay with your uncles, Rupa and Sanatan.“ Then, Jiva Goswamipad also proceeded to Vrndavan.

On the way to Vrndavan, Jiva Goswamipad decided to stay in Kasi (Varanasi) for a few days to listen from a scholar, Madhusudana Vachaspati, who is an expert in all Vedanta, especially the discussion of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya about Advaita-siddhanta (the teachings of non-dualism), as well as how Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu defeated the philosophy of impersonalism. As time passed by, Jiva Goswamipad also remained thereat for a few months listening to Harikatha from the lotus lips of Madhusudhan Vascapati.

Subsequently, Jiva Goswamipad arrived at Vrndavan and reunited with Rupa and Sanatana. Jiva Goswamipad took diksa from Rupa Goswamipad. What is the meaning of diksa what?

divyam jnanam yato dadyat

kuryat papasya sanksayam

tasmat-dikseti sa prokta

desikais tattva-kovidaih

That religious undertaking which bestows divya-jnana (transcendental knowledge) and destroys papa (sin), papa-bija (the seed of sin) and avidya (ignorance) to the root is called diksa by learned authorities in the absolute truth.

(Hari-bhakti-vilasa 2.9)

Diksa means divya-jnana, the gradual development of transcendental knowledge of Krsna‘s form and one‘s specific relationship with Him, which is sambandha-jnana, knowledge of relationship, gradually eradicates and destroys papa, sinful activities in the heart. Accodring to one‘s relationship, then one can serve his Ista-dev with the mood of possessiveness. However, diksa does not complete in one day. It is a gradual process. One step at a time – sraddha, sadhu sanga, bhajana-kriya, anartha-nivrtti, nistha, ruci, asakti, then bhava. Then diksa will be completed.

There are two kinds of diksa. One is called anusthanika-diksa (formal rituals of diksa), another is called paramartik-diksa. Anusthanika means to formally approach guru, pay your obeisances, and offering flowers, fruits, daksina (recompense), then guru gives this mantra. This is called anusthanika-diksa. Paramartik-diksa is gradual spiritual initiation, step by step, rendering service to lotus feet of guru, adu guru padasra diksa siksa visvambera guru seva. Then gradually mamata will manifest. Mamata means possessivness towards Guru and Krsna. So Jiva Goswamipad received diksa mantra from Rupa Goswamipad in this way and serve to Rupa Goswamipad with mamata. Mamata means? Possessivness.

One day Rupa Goswamipad was writing one grantha (religious script). During this time, Vallabhacarya (Vallabha Bhatta) who is a very learned scholar visited Rupa Goswamipad. On his visit, Vallabhacarya asked, “Rupa, what grantha are you writing?“ Then Rupa Goswamipad replied, “I am writing Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (nectar of devotion)“. Vallabhacarya enquired, “What sloka (verse) are you writing?“ Rupa Goswamipad replied:

bhukti-mukti-sprha yavat pisaci hrdi vartate

tavad bhakti-sukhasyatra katham abhyudayo bhavet

The material desire to enjoy the material world and the desire to become liberated from material bondage are considered to be two witches, and they haunt one like ghosts. As long as these witches remain within the heart, how can one feel transcendental bliss? As long as these two witches remain in the heart, there is no possibility of enjoying the transcendental bliss of devotional service.

(Caitanya-Caritamrta, Madhaya-lila, 19.176)

Meaning, in the heart there are many kinds of material sense gratification. Bhukti means to enjoy material sense gratification, or mukti, liberation. How is it possible for suddha-bhakti (pure devotion) to manifest in the heart with these types of desire ? Bhukti-mukti-sprha yavat pisaci hrdi vartate. Pisaci means as like the ghost. If one‘s body is possessed by ghost, the body will never develop. Whatever that is eaten, the ghost is nourished. So how is it possible for the body to be developed ? Do you understand ?

What is the definition of suddha-bhakti ?

anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavrtam

anukulyena krsnanu-silanam bhaktir uttama

The cultivation of activities that are meant exclusively for the pleasure of Sri Krsna or in other words the uninterrupted flow of service to Sri Krsna performed through all endeavours of the body, mind and speech, and through the expession of various spiritual sentiments (bhavas), which is not covered by jnana (knowledge aimed at impersonal liberation) and karma (reward seeking activity) and which is devoid of all desires other than the aspiration to bring happinesss to Sri Krsna is called uttama-bhakti, pure devotional service.

(Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.1.11)

Rupa Goswamipad quoted this verse, bhukti-mukti-sprha yavat pisaci hrdi vartate / tavad bhakti-sukhasyatra katham abhyudayo bhavet. Then Vallabhacarya enquired, “Rupa, why did you compare with the liberation and also mukti? Because mukti is not so easy. Why do you think that liberation is as like witch, ghost ?“ Rupa Goswamipad is very humble. Vaishnav means is what ? Always humble.

trnad api su-nicena taror iva sahisnuna

amanina mana-dena kirtaniyah sada harih

One who thinks himself lower than the grass, who is more tolerant than a tree, and who does not expect personal honour yet is always prepared to give all respect to others can very easily always chant the holy name of the Lord.

(Caitanya-caritamrta, Adi-lila 17.31 & Siksastakam, verse 3)

If you aspire to become a vaishnav, then you have to learn this verse, sloka. Trnad api su-nicena – Always be very humble, more than the blade of grass. Taror iva sahisnuna amanina mana-dena – tolerant as like the trees, give respect to others, never hankering for own name, fame and reputation.

Rupa Goswamipad humbly replied, “You are a learned scholar. So, you may edit this book as you wish and change any sloka in whatever way you deem fit.“ Vallabhacarya informed Rupa Goswamipad, “It is now midday. I have to take bath in the Yamuna river. Maybe, I will return tomorrow to review and edit your book“.

At that time, Jiva Goswamipad was only a small boy. He was listening to the conversation between Rupa Goswamipad and Vallabhacarya. He was very angry with Vallabhacarya. However, Jiva Goswamipad did not utter a word in front of his guru, Rupa Goswamipad but he was very angry. Jiva Goswamipad thought, “Everything written by my gurudev is perfect. How would it be possible to edit my Guru‘s books ?“

The prominent acarya, Sanatan Goswamipad, who is well versed in all tattva-siddhanta, conclusion of the Absolute Truth, attempted to edit a verse of Rupa Goswamipad‘s writings. However, Sanatan Goswamipad realised that whatever Rupa Goswamipad wrote was perfect.

Once, when Sanatan Goswamipad met up with his younger brother,Rupa Goswamipad. Sanatan Goswamipad asked, “Rupa, what sloka are you writing?“ Rupa Goswamipad replied, “Oh! I am writing one sloka about Srimati Radhika, how beautiful and attractive Her braid is.“ Rupa Goswamipad wrote that Srimati Radhika‘s braid is like the hood of the black serpent.

Sanatan Goswamipad: Rupa, why do you compare Srimati Radhika‘s braid with the black poisonous serpent ?

Rupa Goswamipad: Brother, you may edit my writing as you like. You may replace any words and verses.

Sanatan Goswamipad: I will return tomorrow to edit your verse.

So, Sanatan Goswamipad left to perform his bhajan-sadhan. On the way, Sanatan Goswamipad saw some young cowherd girls of Vraja surrounding a swing. They were swinging a very nice and beautiful young girl Who was sitting on the swing. As Sanatan Goswamipad came nearer, he saw a black serpent sitting on the young girl‘s head Who was sitting on the swing. Sanatan Goswamipad also noticed Her braid is like the black snake. Sanatan Goswamipad, “He! Lala, snake on your snake!“ as he approached closer. The young cowherd girls laughed and disappeared. Sanatan Goswamipad realised that they are not ordinary girls. They Srimati Radhika and Her sakhis, Lalita and Vishaka.

Sanatan Goswamipad returned to Rupa Goswamipad‘s ashram to inform Rupa Goswamipad that he cannot and will never edit any of Rupa Goswamipad‘s slokas. Therefore, Jiva Goswamipad thought, “Even Sanatan Goswamipad was not able to edit my gurudev‘s grantha because what my gurudev wrote is perfect. How is it possible for Vallabhacarya to edit my Gurudev’s grantha.“ So, Jiva Goswamipad became very angry at Vallabhacarya and thought to himself, “How is it possible for my Gurudev’s work to be edited? My gurudev‘s writing is perfect“.

Using an excuse of the empty pitcher, Jiva Goswamipad requested permission to refill it. When Rupa Goswamipad granted him, Jiva Goswamipad proceeded to the Yamuna river.

Arriving at the same spot where Vallabhacarya was taking his bath, Jiva Goswamipad started to challenge Vallabhacarya.

Jiva Goswamipad: Whatever my gurudev wrote is perfect. So, why do you wish to edit this particular verse of my gurudev‘s ?

Vallabhacarya: Your gurudev stated mukti is like pisaci (witch).

Jiva Goswamipad: No! No! Mu gurudev wrote, the desire for liberation, that is called the witch.

Jiva Goswamipad clearly defeated Vallabhacarya. Hence, Vallabhacarya was confused in his thoughts. After taking his bath, Vallabhacarya returned to see Rupa Goswamipad.

Vallabhacarya: Rupa, who is this boy ? He is very intelligent.

Rupa Goswamipad: In a very humble way replied, “Oh! He has two kinds of relationships with me. He is my nephew and also my disciple“.

Vallabhacarya: Oh! I will never edit your book because he has defeated me.

When Vallabhacarya left, Rupa Goswamipad became very angry at Jiva Goswamipad, “Jiva, listen. What is the teaching of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu?“

Rupa Goswamipad continued, “He is a scholar who came in front of me for his name, fame and reputation. Why did you not give respect to him? You are not qualified to stay with me as well as performing bhajan and sadhan. Go!”

Jiva Goswamipad also left the place taking up shelter at a place infested with crocodiles. He thought, “What will I do now?” For three days, Jiva Goswamipad did not take prasadam (sanctified food). All the Vrajabasis were searching for Jiva Goswamipad as well as Sanatan Goswamipad. It was rumoured that Jiva Goswamipad was living in the hole where the crocodiles had lived.

Upon discovering Jiva Goswamipad, Sanatan Goswamipad brought him to Rupa Goswamipad.

Sanatan Goswamipad: He! Rupa, what is the teaching of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu?

Rupa Goswamipad: Giving mercy to all the living entities (jive – daya paro dharmo. Jive-daya means giving mercy to all the living entities.)

Sanatan Goswamipad: This is also Jiva (jiva – the living entity) and also jiva.

Jive-daya paro dharmo. That time, Rupa Goswamipad provided shelter of his lotus feet by embracing his disciple, Jiva Goswamipad who resumed serving the lotus feet of his gurudev.

What is the teaching? One side is Rupa Goswamipad, another side is Jiva Goswamipad. This is Rupa Goswamipad’s teaching, one should always be humble and give respect to others. Jiva Goswamipad has guru-nishta. It is stated in the scriptures, “one who criticises guru, never achieve faith again”. So, be very careful.

Gurupad padma nistha, never criticise guru, never criticise any vaishnav. Never associate with one who criticises guru and vaishnav. Otherwise, you won’t be able to respect guru and vaishnav. Vaishnav is guru, and guru is vaishnav. Always. There are no difference between guru and vaishnav. You receive diksa from guru, and someone received diksa from another guru. So what is the difference? Guru is vaishnav, vaishnav is guru. Your gurudev in front of me, vaishnav, and my gurudev in front of you is also vaishnav. So there is no difference between guru and vaishnav. One who criticises guru and vaishnav never associate with him. Be very cautious. Guru nindu…. Our sastra says: “One who criticises guru and vaishnav, never see his face”. Be very careful with this matters. And do bhajan and sadhan. No criticising. Do bhajan and sadhan.


According to Bhakti Prajnana Keshav, “Vaishanav is guru and guru is vaishanav”. In this regard, one should respect accordingly.

Mad guru jagat guru, my guru is universal. Mad guru jagat guru. It is not that I respect my guru and disobey vaishanav. You cannot do this. This is also called vaishanav-aparadha. On the other hand, it is also guru-aparadha. Guru will be not pleased if you disobey to vaishnav. Guru will be pleased if you give respect to vaishnav. Always try to give respect to vaishnav. We have two hands, left hand and right hand. Which hand is stronger? It cannot be determined. Both hands are equal. One hand is called guru, another is called vaishnav.

Hari, guru, vaishanav. You give the same respect to gurudev and vaishnav. Those who respect guru but disrespect and dishonor to vaishnav, guru will not be pleased.

You think, “I like my guru but I don’t like vaishnav.” This is an offence, guru will be never pleased. Listen very carefully. Always give respect to guru and the same to vaishnav. Jasode pada…… Guru means diksa-guru and siksa-guru. Siksa guru is as like vaishnav, and diksa-guru – Guru. But both are called guru-tattva.

Jiva Goswamipad explained, “I have to chastise those who criticices my guru. Whatever my gurudev has written that is 100% perfect”. Due to our misunderstanding about guru and vaishnav, we sometimes respect guru and disrespect vaishanav. Our scripture states that you must respect to both, guru and vaishnav.

Just I recalled in the earlier days, my Gurudev visited a devotee’s house. The said devotee only placed Gurudev’s picture, Narayan Goswami Maharaj, on his altar. Noticing this, Gurudev become very angry, “Why you not put Vamana Goswami?”. Devotee replied, “You are my guru”. Gurudev, “What stupid nonsense. Without Vamana Goswami Maharaj, don’t put my picture. If you put my picture, you have to put Vamana Goswami Maharaj and Trivikrama Goswami Maharaj. Look! How is it possible for you to be liberated?” Meaning, guru is teaching how to give respect to vaishnav. Guru is vaishnav. Vaishnav is guru. So never disrespect vaishnav. So be very careful. You should give respect to guru and vaishnav. Likewise, vaishnav and guru.

Those who are thinking and saying, “After my gurudev, no guru parampara.” Such person is like the disciple of Kali. Gurudev always said this, guru parampara will never stop. As like the stream of Ganges never stop. Guru parampara will never stop. Some people think, “After my gurudev, no guru parampara.” This is called impersonalism. Guru parampara is always going on. So, be very careful of these matter. For this regard, gurudev also gave one lecture. You think, “After my gurudev, no guru parampara.” This is called ritvik. Think this way, “This person is guru, take initiation from him and you are his disciples.” Guru parampara is always what? Guru-sakti, bhagavat-sakti, always going on, never stop.
