Bhagavat Saptah – Krsna’s childhood (1)

January 2013
Rio de Janeiro/RJ, Brazil
Sri Bhagavat Saptah 1st day, part 1

We will discuss Srimad Bhagavatam-katha. We will do this during the course of seven days, especially the 10th canto (dasha skandha).

Srimad Bhagavatam is non-different from Krsna Himself. Kali yuga started when Krsna departed from this material world (Krsna svadam upopate). In this kali-yuga, conditioned souls have unlimited faults (dosa).

kaler dosa-nidhe rajann

asti hy eko mahan gunah

kirtanad eva krsnasya

mukta-sangah param vrajet

“My dear King this age is full of unlimited faults. Indeed, it is just like an ocean of faults (dosa-nidhe), but there is one chance, one opportunity, kirtanad eva krsnaya mukta-sangah param vrajet: simply by chanting Hare Krishna mantra, one can be freed from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom.”

SB (12.3.51)

Living entities have innumerable faults, so how can they be delivered from this kali-yuga? For this regard, Krishna again manifested himself in this kali yuga in the form of Srimad Bhagavatam. If the living entities listen to Bhagavat-katha they will be delivered from this material world and attain the Lord. Srimad Bhagavatam is non-different from Krishna and its twelve cantos mean Krishna’s twelve limbs of body.

padau yadiyau prathama dvitiyau trityaturyau kathitau yaduru

nabhistatha pancamaa eva sasto bhujantaram

doryugalam yathanyau mukharavindam dasamam praphullam

ekadaasau yasya lalatha pathakam siro pi yad

dvadasa eva bati tamadidevam karuna nidhanam

tamala varnam suhit avataram aparasamsara samudra

setum bhajamehe bhagavata svarupam

“I worship Him, the original Lord, the reservoir of mercy, who is of the color of a tamala tree, who has descended to benefit all (suhitavataram). He is the personality of the Bhagavatam, a bridge to cross over the ocean of the endless material existence. The first and second cantos are His two feet (padau), the third and fourth are said to be His thighs (uru) , the fifth canto is His navel (nabhih), the sixth canto is His chest (bhujantaram), the other two (seventh and eighth) cantos are His two arms (dor-yugalam), O king , the ninth cantos is His neck (kantha), the tenth canto is His blossomed lotus face (mukharavindam praphullam), the eleventh canto is His forehead (lalata-pattakam) and twelfth canto shines as His crown (sirah).”

(Padma Purana)

In the Padma Purana, the Srimad Bhagavatam is nicely glorified.

Tamal varnam govinda – whose complexion is like a blackish tamal tree.

Karuna nidhanam – He Govinda, you are the embodiment of compassion.

Suhit avataram – You are the friend of all the living entities.

aparasamsara samudra setum… – This material world is like an ocean. In this material ocean no one can build a bridge but Prabhu, He Govinda, He Syamasundara, He Madanamohana, you have manifested your svarupa. Srimad Bhagavatam is like a bridge.

One who takes shelter in Srimad Bhagavatam (this bridge) can very easily cross the ocean of material existence.

tamadidevam karuna nidhanam tamala varnam suhitavataram aparasamsara samudra setum bhajamehe bhagavata svarupam

He Prabhu, He Govinda, He karuna nidhanam (one who gives this mercy to all the living entities), like a raincloud never discriminate where to fall and only showers its rain, in the same way, He Govinda, He Syamasundara, your mercy (karuna) is everywhere all over the universe. Because you are the embodiment of compassion, especially in this kali-yuga, You manifested Yourself in the form of Srimad Bhagavatam.

The first and second cantos of Srimad Bhagavatam are His two legs.

The third and fourth cantos are His thighs, the fifth canto is His navel, the sixth and seventh cantos are His strong arms, the eight canto is His chest, the ninth canto, His throat and the tenth canto is His nice and very beautiful, delightful shining moon face, from where all the rays of the moon come from. Without a face what is the beauty of this body there is no beauty only the beauty of the body exists, nothing more. If you have nice hands, legs, all limbs of the body, but if your face is covered with a black cloth, no one can see you. Tenth canto is Krsna’s face which gives so much mercy to all.

The eleventh canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam is Krsna’s forehead and the twelfth is His head.

In this way, our sastra Padma Purana glorifies and explains that the limbs of the body of Krsna are non-different from the Srimad Bhagavatam.

Srila Vyasadeva Gosvamipad manifested the Srimad Bhagavatam for the benefit of the living entities, especially in this kali-yuga. The Srimad Bhagavatam is the latest purana and Srila Sukadev Gosvamipad very nicely glorifies the tenth canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam. In only one sloka, He glorifies all of the Srimad Bhagavatam:

jayati jana-nivaso devaki-janma-vado

yadu-vara-parisat svair dorbhir asyann adharmam

sthira-cara-vrjina-ghnah su-smita-sri-mukhena

vraja-pura-vanitanam vardhayan kama-devam

“Sri Krsna is He who is known as jana-nivasa, the ultimate resort of all living entities, and who is also known as Devaki-nandana, the son of Devaki and Yasoda. He is the guide of the Yadu dynasty, and with His mighty arms He kills everything inauspicious, as well as every man who is impious. By His presence He destroys all things inauspicious for all living entities, moving and inert. His blissful smiling face always increases the lusty desires of the gopis of Vrindavana. May He be all glorious and happy”

(SB 10.9.48)

In this verse, Srila Sukadev Gosvamipad told to Maharaj Parikisit: Krsna performed His sweet lila in Braja and everybody became intoxicated with this sweet lila. Who does not want to listen to Krsna-katha? Everybody is intoxicated to listen to Krsna katha, only one person does not want to listen Krsna-katha:

nivrtta-tarsair upagiyamanad

bhavausadhac chrotra- mano bhiramat

ka uttamasloka gunanuvadat

puman virajyeta vina pasughnat

“Glorification of Krsna is performed in the parampara system, that is, it is conveyed from the spiritual master to disciple. Such glorification is relished by those no longer interested in the false, temporary glorification of this cosmic manifestation. Descriptions of the Lord are the right medicine for the conditioned soul undergoing birth and death. Therefore, who will cease hearing such glorification of the Lord except a butcher or one who is killing his own self?”

(SB 10.1.4)

Nivritti even the impersonalists (advaitavadis) those who want to merge with the brahman, if they listen to Krsna-katha, they will give up the meditation in brahman.

Sukadeva Gosvamipad told Maharaj Parikisit parinisthito brahaman first I meditated and tried to merge with the brahman but when I heard (Krsna Katha) the pastimes of Krsna , I gave up the meditation in brahman.

Sukadev Gosvamipad said, those who are suffering in this material world with the three types of sufferings – adyatmika (is misery of mind) adhibhautikah (suffering from body and other living entity) and adhidaivika (suffering from demigods e.g.. natural disaster).

If they listen to Krsna-katha, they will survive from these three types of distress and will submerged in the divine love of Radha-Krsna.

If you listen to Krishna-Katha all the types of your sinful activities will be destroyed and all your problems will be automatically solved.

How many problems do you have? We have innumerable problem isn’t it. First you have body problems because in this body there are many kinds of diseases. Second is mind problems, mind becomes very disturbed or suffer from mental diseases. Third, there are the problems of your wife or husband. Fourth, the problems of your sons and daughters. Is this not true? Fifth problem is money that is why you are all working hard to get more and more money. Everything is limited in this material world, you cannot get unlimited money. Economical problem, like this there are so many problems everywhere. The question is how we can solve these problems? If you solve one problem, the next day another problem is created.

However Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that if you chant the holy names, all your problems will be solved very easily. Who wants to solve their problems? Raise your hands. All who raised their hands are pretenders. You don’t want to actually solve the problems; you want to create more problems. If I tell, you chant the holy names:

Hare Krishna

Hare Krishna

Krishna Krishna

Hare Hare

Hare Rama

Hare Rama

Rama Rama

Hare Hare

And your entire problem will be solved. Chant the holy names. You don’t want to chant and say, “Maharaja, how I can solve my problems?” This is stupid non-sense.

Take the medicine but you don’t want to take the medicine then what can be done. If you go to the doctor, and he gives you medicine but if you don’t want to take the medicine, what can the doctor do?

Our sastra says to chant the holy names Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, this is the process.

Maybe you will say, Maharaja, I’m chanting the holy names, but my problems are still coming here to be solved. This is true, problems will come although you are taking medicine but you are not following the instruction of how to take the medicine hence how will it work. Like this you are chanting the holy name but you are not giving up bad association than how will the medicine work?

If you go to an Ayurvedic doctor he will give you medicine and something else to take with the medicine like honey or yogurt. Simultaneously you should not take others things like sour ingredients for example.

So, if you take the medicine but not follow the rules, how would it be possible for the medicine to work? Nama is the best medicine but simultaneously you have to give up the bad association, asat sanga, understand. If you don’t give up the bad association and chant the holy names, it won’t give fruits. You take medicine and don’t give up other things this may increase your disease. That’s why the sastra says, chant the holy name and simultaneously give up all kinds of offenses, specially the ten types of nama-aparadha, (offenses).

Regarding asat-sanga, Bhaktivinoda Thakura says, give up the bad association and chant the holy names and automatically all your problems will be solved, this is the process. The Srimad Bhagavatam always glorifies Harinam.

What are the gopis doing in Braj? When they are churning yogurt or cleaning their house they are chanting Krsna nama, Govind nama:-

Govinda Damodara Madhaveti, Govinda Damodara Madhaveti, he Krsna, he Yadava, he sakheti, Govinda Damodara Madhaveti!

When Mother Yasoda wakes Krsna Gopal early in the morning she chants, He Govinda, he Gopal, wake up, open your eyes, why are you still sleeping? Gopal jagave jago nandana He Govinda Gopal, wake up; open your eyes (utho nayana kholo).

Utthaya gopy para ratra bhoge

Samritva yasoda- suta- bala-kelim

Gayanti proccair dadhi manthayantyo

Govinda Damodara Madhaveti

Govinda Damodara Madhaveti

“Upon awakening, the gopis (Yasoda) would churn yogurt while remembering the many childhood pastimes of Gopal. In doing so, they would loudly sing ‘Govind damodara Madhavati'”

(Sri Govind Damodara Stotram 16)

One couple just finished their marriage ceremony and returned back to the father-in-law’s house. The bride and groom were very tired so they took rest. In the morning the bride woke up and said, oh my husband, why are you sleeping? Please wake up, look some sun rays have come in our room so please wake up and let us both chant Krsna-nama, Govinda-nama.

Govinda Damodara Madhaveti

Govind Damodara Madhaveti

Govinda Damodara Madhaveti

Another lady was stroking the back of her baby and saying, why you are crying, do not cry (ro mat) and singing,

Govinda Damodara Madhaveti

Govind Damodara Madhaveti

Govinda Damodara Madhaveti

In Braj, also the braja vasis while performing their household duties, grhe-karma, they were always glorifying and chanting Krsna-nama.

Jiva ha karo adhisam guru kirtanam

Lord gives us tongue to glorify these sweet pastimes and these sweet names. In this way the Srimad Bhagavatam glorifies about the holy names, nama-sankirtana.

adi-mancha sarva hari yahata

In the first sloka, in the middle and in the end sloka, Krsna-nama is glorified.

Jayati janani nivaso – all glories to Krsna, who resides in the heart of all living entities as paramatma. Now He performs human being-lila, nara-lila.

He took birth in the womb of Mother Yasoda but general people thinks Krsna took birth from the womb of Mother Devaki in Mathura (yadu vara parisat pandavas…).

The Pandavas are Krsna’s own entourage, especially Bhīma and Arjuna Krsna’s two arms. He destroys all kinds of sinful activities from the heart of the living entities with His darsan, giving His darsan.

Only by taking darsan of Krsna, all hearts become completely free from all kinds of sinful activities, and who are high-class and exalted devotees take His darsan, everybody’s hearts also become intoxicated with divine love, Krsna-prema.

vacho rasire ciba vansikare kebasi tri bhanga lalit ara sada carana hi bhuma dham

Bhaktivinoda Thakura in this Bengali song explains: How Krsna Govinda is beautiful, the peacock feather on His turban and also the three banga-fold, three-bang-lalita. He plays His flute and gives a very nice and beautiful smiling face and a romantic long-side glance.

bandhu sange jadi tava parihasa, thake abhilasa

tabe mora katha rakho, jeyo nako jeyo nako

mathuraya kesi turtha bhatera sakasa

If you want to enjoy laughing and joking with friends and family, if this is really your desire, then listen to me. Don’t go don’t go to Mathura (Vrindavana) to Kesi-ghata. If you want to enjoy the sense gratification with your family members, listen my advice, don’t go to Vrndavan. If you go to Vrndavan, don’t go to the bank of Yamuna. If you go to the bank of Yamuna, be careful don’t go to kesi-ghata, where Krsna killed the demon Kesi. If you go Kesi ghata, be careful, very near there is the temple of Govinda-dev.

(Bandu-Sange 1)

If you go there, listen to my final advice, don’t take darsan of Govinda. He is a big cheater. If you take darsan of His beautiful lotus face, you will never return back to your home. His name is Hari, hareki manaki hari; he will steal your mind. His name is Govinda; He gives pleasure to all the senses. What kind of pleasure? He fives the transcendental pleasure of your senses automatically, you will give up the material pleasure.

He has a very nice and beautiful three-bang-fold, a peacock feather and He keeps the flute on His lips. He has a special romantic side-long glance. He will captivate you. He is a big hunter and with this romantic side-long glance. His flute vamsi is very special (adari vamsi tar anartha…) don’t have faith in Him, He is a big cheater. You will cry and all your family members will cry. You will cry for Govinda and all your family members will cry for you. You will go to Vrndavan and will be captivated by His romantic side-long glance; you will cry for Him and will sing:

bhaja govinda govinda gopala, mere murali manohara nanda lala

govind govind gopala murli ghar nnandalal

O nanadalal gopla mere murali manohara nanadla

In this way you should cry for Govind in Vrindavan.

If you have His darshan only once, you will disappear and your family members will not chant Krsna-nama, they will cry for you.

That means you have to chant Krsna-nama and pray for Krsna to have darshan of His beautiful form. How beautiful is His form and His activities: rupa-madhurya and lila-madhurya, prema-madhurya and venu-madhurya (the sweetness of the sound of His flute). Krsna performs sweet lila and the first ones are His childhood pastimes, janma-lila.

Lokavata lila kavalam. He performs human being lila, called manava human lila. Krsna took birth from the womb of Mother Yasoda.

The mind of Kamsa in Mathura was very disturbed, always thinking about what the aerial sound said: “Kamsa, soon your killer will appear, take birth and kill you. He has already taken birth somewhere”. In this way, Kamsa called his own entourage and whole night discussed how He could be free from his anxiety.

Since Bhagavan resides and can manifest everywhere, how possible will Kamsa find out and kill Him?

Then Putana stood up in the reunion. She was very ugly.

kamsena prahita ghora

putana bala ghatini

sisums cacara nighnanti

pura grama vrajadisu

“While Nanda Maharaja was returning to Gokula, the same fierce Putana whom Kamsa had previously engaged to kill babies was wandering about towns, cities and villages, doing her nefarious duty.”

(SB 10.6.1)

She used to kill newborn babies and drink their blood. Her name is Putana. Puta means pure and na means, not. So, her name, Putana means ‘impure’. Her body is very, very ugly. If you see her only once you don’t want to open your eyes the next time. Her two legs are like the legs of an elephant. Her breasts are like two big mountains. She is very ugly and her hair is like the flame of the fire.

Ladies in general should always maintain their beautiful hair and keep their hair very nice and tidy. Those whose hair is not tidy may be the sisters of Putana.

The beauty of the ladies depends of their hair (nari sungarjan kesam). But Putana’s hair is like the flames of fire. Her teeth are like the two fangs of the snake. If your teeth are not good and you laugh, people can call you Putana. That’s why people go to the dentist to correct them.

Putana said “I have to go to Braja and kill Krsna” then Kamsa said “Sister, you are very ugly, how can you possibly enter in Braja? Who will give you permission to enter there? With this nice and beautiful form you have (ironically), if the brajavasis see your beautiful form they will run away and say: “Oh, who is coming?” Then, Putana said: “Brother, don’t worry, I know some mystic powers and with them I can manifest a very nice and beautiful, handsome young girl form”. “My beauty will defeat the beauty of Lakshmi.” In this way, I can easily enter Braj with my beautiful body and kill Krsna. In my breast I will put a deadly snake poison and then I will feed Krsna with my breast and He will die because He is only seven days old, it will be very easy.

So, Putana asked Kamsa for a blessing and Kamsa told: “Ok, my sister, I’m giving you my heartily blessing to you, sarva mangalam bhavatu, chalo, never come back”. Then, Putana flew to Braj.

According to the Vedic culture, new born baby after six days, receive the worship of the demigods, sasti puja, for his benefit. In the Indian Vedic culture, they worship many demigods for the purification and to receive benefit. So now, Mother Yasoda and all the brajavasis were performing a very nice and beautiful celebration.

However on that day, Nanda Maharaja went to Mathura to pay taxes to King Kamsa, and that time, Putana came and manifested a very nice and beautiful, handsome young lady. She must have gone to the hair dressing salon (beauty parlor) because now her hair was a very long and beautiful hair, touching below her the knees. Her face was very beautiful as like a plastic surgery face.

In the modern science nowadays they do this, you probably know this, her body was now nice and strong, very beautiful and attractive. Her lips were beautiful with nice reddish color. She also took one lotus flower in her hand. Her eyes were beautiful and attractive like two fishes (masta). Minashki means one’s eyes are like fish. Her eyebrows were like bows.

If you go to the beauty parlor they will do this very nicely. Now she was beautiful, attractive and very intoxicated with her own beauty.

She was thinking: “I am the Miss Universe, everybody used to say I’m Putana, I’m ugly but now I am the Miss Universe”. She was rotating the lotus flower in her hands. When she entered Braj, the braja gopis became completely astonished with her beauty.

Some braja gopis were bringing water from the well, maybe three or four pots on their heads, without holding.

Have you seen some braja girl in Vrndavana, they put not only one pot but several pots on their head, balancing and talking with their friends. They do things with their hands, very easily, balancing the pots. When they saw Putana in that form they stopped what they were doing, while touching each other said “Oh, look, who’s is coming?” and their pots fell down, “Oh, who is this girl?”. Then, another braja lady said, “oh, she must have come from the heavenly planets!”, and another lady said “no, she probably has come from Vaikhunta-dham, the consort of Lord Narayana”, “in our life we have never seen this type of lady. Look at her eyes, nose, chest, and hands, how beautiful they are”. “She must be Laksmi-devi come from Vaikhunta to give blessings to our Nanda-lala”.

For this regard, no one stopped her or asked her where she came from. Everybody moved aside to give her way. Putana very easily entered the room of Krsna, where He was sleeping on a small swing.

Krsna is Bhagavan, so He knew who has come. He first opened and then closed His eyes.

Here we have to attempt to understand one thing, in the Ramayana and Srimad Bhagavatam, Bhagavan Ramacandra first killed Tarakasura, one lady demon, as Krsna-avatar, Krsna would also first kill a lady.

He closed his eyes and realized who had arrived and “how will I kill this lady?”

For this regard Krsna closed His eyes and thinking that “I have to deliver her”.

Putana in a previous life was the daughter of Bali Maharaja, Ratnabali. Sukadeva Gosvamipad explained the Bali-Vamana story.

Lord Vamana-dev came to the place of Bhrgukaccha where Bali Maharaja was performing asvamedha sacrifice. Before starting the yagna, fire sacrifice, Bali Maharaja gave one donation. Vaman-dev, a very small person, a dwarf and asked very humbly to Bali Maharaja: “Maharaja, I’m a brahmana boy; I need only one small piece of land to perform bhajan and sadhana”.

Brahmanas should be free from greed. Vamana-dev said: “I’m the son of Kashyap, my father is a brahman, so I’m a brahman son, I only want 3 steps land, not more. I need this but I have one condition, I have to measure this land with my own feet. I want only three of my steps of land”.

Vamana-dev’s feet was not bigger than 3 inches, very small feet. “I need only tripad bhumi” (three steps land), but Vaman-dev is Bhagavan, and Bhagavan means that He is very beautiful and attractive with so much effulgence was coming from His body. He was very attractive, this is the symptom of Bhagavan, and all the limbs of His body are very attractive.

When Ratnabali, Bali Maharaja’s daughter, saw Vamana-dev’s beautiful form, she became very attracted to Him. In her mind she thought: “oh, if this sweet boy were my son I would feed him with my breast”, vatsalya-bhava.

Bhagavan is vanca-kalpa-taru, the Lord is called a desire tree, and this means that He will fulfill any desire. In this way, Vamana-dev also in his mind thought: “I must accept milk from her breast”.

When Bali Maharaja took the vow with arcamana, he said – “Ok, brahman boy, what do you want? Three steps of land? Ok, I will give it to you”.

Then Lord Vamana-dev manifested His Trivikram form, with three legs and in His first step, he measured the whole prithvi (Earth). With His second step, He measured the whole Svarga-loka, because at that time, Bali Maharaja also ruled Svarga-loka. And, like an umbrella, He covered the whole universe, going towards Brahma-loka. There, Brahmaji worshipped His lotus feet with his kamandal water and kept that water, full Vedic water. Later, King Bhagirathi manifested the River Ganges in this material world with this Vamanadev Bhagavan foot bath water.

In this way, Lord Vamana-dev Bhagavan covered Bali Maharaj’s whole kingdom and the whole universe and asked to the king: “He Bali Maharaj, where should I put my third leg?”

We are human beings and have two legs, we don’t have the third and fourth leg like some animals, like the cows. But who has three legs?? Spiders have eight legs. But three legs? Who has this? Bali Maharaj asked: “Where are your third leg?” Then, Vamana-dev manifested His third leg. Then, Bali Maharaj thought: “I gave everything to Him but I didn’t give myself”, then he said: “Prabhu, keep your lotus feet on my head”. This is complete saranagati, surrender.

Seeing this, Ratnabali, the daughter of Bali Maharaja, became angry and thought: “How stupid of my father, he saw small feet of Vamana-dev but now He has taken everything from Him. This Vamana-dev is a big cheater. First I desired to be His mother and feed Him with my breasts milk but now if He comes like my son, I will give Him poison with my breast milk”.

Bhagavan then thought: “Hey, Ratnabali, you cannot kill me but I must suck your breast”. The same Ratnabali in Krsna lila has come in the form of Putana. When Krsna saw her He thought: “Who has come? I have to deliver Putana and fulfill her desire”.

Putana came to Braj very nice and beautifully done up from the hair dressing salon, very attractive with nice nails, with complete plastic surgery in all her limbs of her body. Yoga Maya had arranged everything.

All gopis went out of their rooms. Even Mother Yasoda went out to another room, so as to bring something for the gopis. Putana then said “Very nice, come, come, I will feed you with my breast milk. I will kill you with a very deadly poison smeared on my breast”. Gopal was only six days, and the lips of a six days year old baby are very soft, He doesn’t even know how to suck a breast.

Mother knows this and sometimes by force she feeds her breast milk to the baby. Baby does not know how to suck, sucking here and there. This is true or wrong? But mother knows. When the baby is very hungry he sucks hands also. So, Putana by force put her breast in the mouth of Gopal.

Krsna thought: “No one can blame me of doing sinful activities because by force she is putting her breast in my mouth, this is not my fault”.

Sukadev Gosvami very nicely explained in gargasamita how Putana by force pumped her breast and put in the mouth of Gopal. Krsna just touched the nipples of her and all the prana Vayu (air life) of her life came out. So much sweat smell came out from her body. She felt so much pain and she tried to throw Krsna from her breast. She had the strength of 10,000 elephants in her hands but it was impossible.

“Choro, choro”, give up, give up my breast!, she cried loudly but because of Yoga-maya, no one could listen to her crying. Putana could not throw out from her breast a six days old baby. She was thinking: “what to do now? I must return back to Mathura, maybe Kamsa and all his ankaras will be able to throw Krsna from my breast and release me”. So she manifested her original form, Putana! Her beauty finished. Now she has come back into her original, a very ugly form.

She flew over Braj using her mystic powers going towards Mathura, and a big wind came everywhere was windy and dusty. All the brajavasis looked up and saw big winds and wondered what was happening, why is this big wind coming suddenly?

Someone noticed: “Oh, there is one witch raksasi! And Krsna is lying on her chest and she’s flying towards Mathura”.

When Mother Yasoda heard this, she fainted: “where is my love?” All brajavasis were running after her, but before arriving in Mathura, where Kamsa has a very nice and beautiful garden called hatras, Putana fell down and left her body.

When you go to Braj Mandala parikrama, there’s this place where Putana fell down, Kamas’s garden called Hatras, where all the trees were completely destroyed. Putana’s huge body and her huge limbs destroyed Kamas’s garden completely.

Brajavasis very quickly came and they saw that Krsna was safe and loving smiling on Putana’s chest.

Srimad Bhagavatam glorifies this pastime. Putana’s body was very long and huge like the big Himalayas Mountain; brajavasis brought many ladders and, step by step, went up on the chest of Putana, and brought Krsna down and gave Him back to Mother Yasoda. Then, the brajavasis cut Putana’s body in many small pieces and burned them. Not only one, but many cemetery places (crematories) were used to burn her big body. But something strange happened, when they burned Putana’s body, a sweet fragrance came out like incense and chandan (sweet sandalwood fragrance).

Pariksit Maharaja asked: “Putana was an asura, so why bad smell did not came out from her body but instead a sweet sandal wood fragrance came out?”

Sukadev Gosvami explained that because Krsna touched her body with His lips, and not only this but Krsna delivered her to Goloka and there she became a maidservant of Mother Yasoda.

aho baki yam stana-kala-kutam

jighamsayapayayad apy asadhvi

lebhe gatim dhatry-uchitam tato nyam

kam va dayalum saranam vrajema

“Alas, how shall I take shelter of one more merciful than He who granted the position of mother to a she-demon (Putana) although she was unfaithful and she prepared deadly poison to be sucked from her breast?”

(SB 3.2.23)

Who does not want to take shelter of Krsna Govinda? Even Putana, who was very ugly and impure, she didn’t perform bhajan and sadana, nothing, but Govinda delivered her and sent her to Golok as a maidservant of Mother Yasoda.

Who does not want to take shelter of the lotus feet of Govinda? Anyhow, if you come in contact with Krsna Govinda, He will deliver you. Putana just pretended the form of a vatsalya bhakta, parental mood, and Krsna delivered her.

In this way Sukadev Gosvamipad first explained Putana lila: we have to give up all kind of duplicity and hypocrisy, then Krsna will give us His mercy.

After Putana bhandan lila, Krsna performed many lilas and killed many demons like Sakadasur, Trinavarta.
