Srila Rupa Gosvami

January 2013
Rio de Janeiro,Brazil

Yesterday evening we also discussed the glorification of Sri Rupa Goswami and this morning we also discussed Srimad Bhagavatam.

Many lilas are going on, many kinds of Radha Govinda sweet pastimes. So yesterday I told how we chant the holy names but we have to give up all kind of offences and chant the holy name. Rupa Goswamipada is not an ordinary person, he is nearest and dearest of Srimati Radhika.

So in this lila: offence Vaisnava aparadha. Yesterday, I said that Krsna Das came to the cottage and that time met Rupa Goswamipada completely absorbed in his trance and in that lila.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said ‘hey Rupa

yadi vaiṣṇava-aparādha uṭhe hātī mātā
upāḍe vā chiṇḍe, tāra śukhi’ yāya pātā

“If the devotee commits an offence at the feet of a Vaiṣṇava while cultivating the creeper of devotional service in the material world, his offence is compared to a mad elephant that uproots the creeper and breaks it. In this way, the leaves of the creeper are dried up”.
CC Madhya 19.156

If you commit Vaisnava aparadha; offences to lotus feet of Vaisnavas, then you lose everything. A conditioned soul, they have no idea what is Vaisnava aparadha, they have no idea. A Kanistha adhikari, he also does not know what is the offences of a Vaisnava.

A Kanistha adhikari; that means a neophyte devotee’s activities look like an Uttama adhikari, but an Uttama adhikari, he is always absorbed with his trance. A Kanistha adhikari he just imitates, he is thinking, I have become very high level, but it is not true. So for this regard, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that a Kanistha adhikari has no sastra jnana, knowledge of the scriptures.

śāstra-yukti nāhi jāne dṛḍha, śraddhāvān
‘madhyama-adhikārī’ sei mahā-bhāgyavān

One who is not very expert in argument and logic based on the revealed scriptures but who has firm faith is considered a second-class devotee. He also must be considered most fortunate.
CC Madhya 22.67

A Madhyama adhikari he has knowledge of scriptures, sastra jnana. An Uttama adhikari is a high class exalted devotee.

śāstra-yuktye sunipuṇa, dṛḍha-śraddhā yāṅra
‘uttama-adhikārī’ sei tāraye saṁsāra

One who is an expert in logic, argument and the revealed scriptures and who has firm faith in Kṛṣṇa is classified as a topmost devotee. He can deliver the whole world.
CC Madhya 22.65

Who is an Uttama adhikari; he has a vast of knowledge of sastra. One day I asked my Gurudeva ‘how many slokas do you know?’ He said ‘for seven days and seven nights if I recite all the slokas I will never finish’.

In this regard, all Gaudiya Vaisnava give him a dictionary. Srila Narayana Goswami Maharaja many times during his appearance days glorified Srila Vamana Goswami Maharaja. So coming in this way an Uttama adhikari means the vast knowledge of sastra jnana; slokas. He has a very vast knowledge of sastra. No one can defeat him.

Jiva Goswamipada. Who can compare with Jiva Goswamipada? Visvanatha Cakravartipada at that time cut all mayavadi philosophies. So did Jiva Goswamipada. Impersonalists cannot come in front of him. Jiva Goswamipada and Rupa Goswamipada, understand, they have a vast knowledge of sastra.

I will glorify Rupa Goswami and Jiva Goswamipada. Once Rupa Goswamipada in Vrindavana was writing a grantha, and at that time one very learned scholarly person, he came, and his name was Vallabhacarya. Vallabhacarya was very proud of his knowledge, and he sometimes also came in front of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and told of own glorification, ‘Oh I cut the conception of Sridhara Swami philosophy’. Then Mahaprabhu smiled. Mahaprabhu said

prabhu hāsi’ kahe, — “svāmī nā māne yei jana
veśyāra bhitare tāre kariye gaṇana”

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu smilingly replied, “One who does not accept the svāmī [husband] as an authority I consider a prostitute.
CC Antya 7.115

One who one does not accept her husband so he is called a prostitute, do you understand? You do not understand. That means you cannot cut the philosophy Sridhara Goswamipada. Caitanya Mahaprabhu very gently chastised him. ‘How is it possible you cut the philosophy of Sridhara Swamipada?’ Then another day Vallabhacarya came and said to Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu ‘I wrote the commentary of Krsna nama. I gave many explanations and commentary on Krsna nama’. And then, Mahaprabhu said

prabhu kahe, — “kṛṣṇa-nāmera bahu artha nā māni
‘śyāma-sundara’ ‘yaśodā-nandana,’ — ei-mātra jāni

Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu replied, “I do not accept many different meanings for the holy name of Kṛṣṇa. I know only that Lord Kṛṣṇa is Śyāmasundara and Yaśodānandana. That’s all I know.
(CC Antya 7.85)

Then Mahaprabhu said ‘I don’t know the many meanings of Krsna nama he is the son of Yasoda. I know Krsna Nama means just the son of mother Yasoda; Yasodanandana and Syamasundara. How is it possible you explain the many, many meanings of Krsna Nama?’ So in this way, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu destroyed all his pride.

Once, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu cited his entourage, Advaita Acarya, Nityananda, Svarupa Damodara, Rupa Goswamipada, Sanatana Goswamipada and Gadadhara Pandita. Then Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu began to glorify them one by one. Vallabhacarya looks how they are.

Then Vallabhacarya realised ‘oh Caitanya Mahaprabhu is very [inaudible] how they are qualified. Then all his pride, everything was destroyed. Then he took shelter at the lotus feet of Gadadhara Pandita.

Now coming back to the story. Once, Vallabhacarya he came to Rupa Goswamipada and that time Rupa Goswamipada was writing a grantha. Vallabhacarya was a little bit older than Rupa Goswamipada who was a little bit younger. So Vallabhacarya comes to Rupa Goswamipada and asked ‘Rupa what are you writing? Which grantha are you writing?’ Then Rupa Goswamipada very humbly said ‘prabhu I am writing Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu’. Then Vallabhacarya said ‘this is a very nice grantha. The name is very nice. Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu! The Ocean of the Nectar of Devotion. A very nice beautiful grantha, the name is very nice’. Then Vallabhacarya asked ‘what sloka are you writing’? Then Rupa Goswamipada said ‘now, I am writing a sloka’.

bhukti-mukti-spṛhā yāvatpiśācī hṛdi vartate
tāvad bhakti-sukhasyātrakatham abhyudayo bhavet

The material desire to enjoy the material world and the desire to become liberated from material bondage are considered to be two witches, and they haunt one like ghosts. As long as these witches remain within the heart, how can one feel transcendental bliss? As long as these two witches remain in the heart, there is no possibility of enjoying the transcendental bliss of devotional service.
BRS 1.2.22/CC Madhya 19.176

One who performs bhajana and sadhana and in his heart there is a desire of how to merge with Brahman or have sense gratification, then how is it possible for suddha bhakti manifest in his heart? Suddha bhakti means pure devotional service. That means it is completely free from all kinds of material sense gratification and all activities are exclusively for the pleasure to Krsna. So this is the definition of suddha bhakti

anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam
ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu-śīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā

One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa favorably and without desires for material profit or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional service
BRS 1.1.11/CC Madhya 19.167

The cultivation of actives which is exclusively for the pleasure of Krsna’s sense gratification; the heart is not covered by jnana, karma, yoga, tapasya and is free from all kinds of material sense gratification; that is called anyabhilasita. Anukulyena krsnanu-silanam means that all his endeavours are exclusively to give pleasure to Krsna. And this bhakti means what? To serve Krsna incessantly without stopping or interrupting; and your heart cannot be cover by jnana, karma, yoga, tapasya, and to serve to Krsna you also express some sentiments of bhava. So that is called Uttama bhakti, the highest devotional service to Krsna. That is called suddha bhakti.

You practice bhakti but if your heart is a little bit bukti mukti; the desire for sense gratification or, the desire for merging with Brahman then you lose your bhakti. Krsna is very tricky. Krsna will not give bhakti.

kṛṣṇa yadi chuṭe bhakte bhukti mukti diyā
kabhu prema-bhakti nā dena rākhena lukāiyā

If a devotee wants liberation or material sense gratification from the Lord, Kṛṣṇa immediately delivers it, but pure devotional service He keeps hidden.
CC Adi 8.18

Krsna will hide the prema. He will not give it easily and one who performs bhajana and sadhana to Krsna then Krsna hide the prema and gives you mukti and bhukti; sense gratification or liberation.

A thousand, thousand lives you can practice bhajana and sadhana but Hari bhakti is not easy to manifested your heart. So this regard bhakti is called sudurlabha. Sudurlabha means very, very rare. Suddha bhakti is not so easy to do. One pointed bhakti devotee, especially Vraja bhakti. Around Vraja bhaktis Sakya, Vatsalya and Madhurya, conjugal mood is not easy. Gopi prema is very, very rare not easy to obtain. Brahma, Siva and Narada who are high class exalted they cannot attain this so how is it possible that the conditioned soul will attain this? That means that Radha dasyam the maidservant of Srimad Radhika is very, very rare, is not easy to attain.

So maybe your new question will come, why am I doing bhajana and sadhana which is beyond of my eligibility? Why are you practicing this? What will you do this? Maybe your question will come, or not? This is very, very rare. Brahmaji, Sivaji, Narada they are very exalted devoted and they do not attain?

Brahmaji, Sivaji, Naradaji they are liberated and exalted devotees of the Lord and they can not attain so

How is it possible? What is your goal? What is your hope? Try to understand.

When we heard the bhajana of previous acaryas Prahlada, Druva; how they performed sadhana and bhajana and austerities. We are not good in that austerities bhajana and sadhana, so how is it possible to attain to the maidservant of Srimati Radhika, Radha dasyam. Druva Maharaja he performed hard austerities, six months of hard austerities, we can not do this. One Ekadasi we could not perform we took breakfast. Gurudeva said no, on Ekadasi until twelve o’clock you should not drink water. Try to understand if you ask for yourself, how possible it is?

When you heard the nectar about Druva and Prahlada; how they perform bhajan and sadhana? We are not doing austerities we are not doing in this way. So how is it possible to attain highest prema or Radha prema; gopi prema?

Uddhavaji came to Vraja and saw Radharani and the gopi’s prema. Hankering again and again how to get a sprinkle of the mood of Srimati Radhika, it is not possible. Still Uddhava is performing hard austerities on the bank of Kusum Sarovara. So in this way when you hear of previous Acaryas Brahma, Siva, Narada how they are high class, and they can not attain Radha dasyam so what is your hope? How is this possible?

Your only hope is Caitanya Mahaprabhu Gaurasundara and in this Kali Yuga Sacinandana Gaurahari he was called the embodiment of munificent and magnanimity. If you completely and absolutely surrender to Sacinandana Gaurahari then Gaurahari will give the highest prema. So in slokas are saying:

yatha yatha gaura-padaravinde
vindeta bhaktim krta-punya-r
sihtatha tathotsarpati hrdy akasmad

As a pious soul fortunately attains pure devotion to Gauranga and becomes absorbed in rendering service to His lotus feet, the nectar ocean of devotional ecstasy flowing from the lotus feet of Sri Radhika gradually arises without any material cause and floods his heart.
Sri Chaitanya-chandramrta 88

If you completely surrender to Sacinandana Gaurahari them by the causeless mercy Gaurahari you will attain Radha prema otherwise there is no hope. But, how do we surrender to the lotus feet of Sacinandana Gaurahari? So Narottama das Thakura explains: who is very nearest and dearest of Sacinandana Gaurahari is surrendered. And also Prabhodananda Saraswatipada also glorifies who is nearest and dearest to Sacinandana Gaurahari, then by the causeless mercy of Sacinandana Gaurahari you will take birth in Navadvipa dham then all you offense, aparadha will be destroyed. Then by the causeless mercy of Sacinandana Gaurahari, you will be able to enter in Vrindavana dham. This is the process.

gaura-prema-rasarnave, se tarange jeba dube,
se radha-madhava-antaranga

One who dives into the waves of the ocean of gaura-prema becomes a confidential associate of Sri Sri Radha Madhava
(Gaurangera Du’ti Pada Srila Narottama dasa Thakura)

So the highest prema is Radha prema, Radha dasyam , Gopi prema is not so cheap but only by the mercy of Sacinandana Gaurahari and his dham. And in this Kali Yuga there is not another hope, only one hope; how to surrender to Sacinandana Gaurahari.

aradhitam nava-vanam vraja-kananam te
naradhitam nava-vanam vraja eva dure
aradhito dvija-suto vraja-nagaras te
naradhito dvija-suto na taveha krsnah
aradhitam nava-vanam. One who worships Vrindavana and Navadvipa dham, he can attain Vrindavana.

If you worship Navadvipa, then you also worship the forest of Vraja. If you don’t worship Navadvipa, then the forest of Vraja is far away. If you worship Lord Caitanya, then you also worship Sri Radha and Krsna in Vraja. If you don’t worship Lord Caitanya, then you cannot worship Sri Radha and Krsna.
(Prabhodananda Saraswati Navadvipa Sataka 78)

This is the essence of slokas how to surrender to Sacinandana Gaurahari and his dham, Gaura dham, especially Gaura nama and Gaura dham no taking any offense aparadha.

kṛṣṇa-nāma’ kare aparādhera vicāra
kṛṣṇa balile aparādhīra nā haya vikāra

There are offenses to be considered while chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra. Therefore simply by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa one does not become ecstatic.
CC Adi 8.24

caitanya-nityānande nāhi e-saba vicāra
nāma laite prema dena, vahe aśrudhāra

But if one only chants, with some slight faith, the holy names of Lord Caitanya and Nityānanda, very quickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Thus as soon as he chants the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, he feels the ecstasy of love for God.
CC Adi 8.31

Do you know this meaning? kṛṣṇa-nāma’ kare aparādhera vicāra.; if you chant Krsna nama you have to consider about offences of the holy name, nama aparadha. The first nama aparadha, criticism of Vaisnavas. Secondly you think Krsna nama equals Siva nama; that is nama aparadha. The third offense is dishonour to Guru. Guru means both Diksa Guru and Siksa Guru.

caitanya-nityānande nāhi e-saba vicāra
nāma laite prema dena, vahe aśrudhāra

But if one only chants, with some slight faith, the holy names of Lord Caitanya and Nityānanda, very quickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Thus as soon as he chants the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, he feels the ecstasy of love for God.
CC Adi 8.31

If you chant Gaura nama there no offence considered, just chant Gaura Gaura Gaura then you will attain high prema. If you go to Gaura dham, one specific place then, so all your offences will be destroyed.

So that means I told that the only hope of how to attain the highest prema, Radha dasyam or the maidservant of Srimad Radhika, is your only hope Sacinandana Gaurahari. So always remember Sacinandana Gaurahari he is our Istadeva. Who is our Istadeva? Sacinandana Gaurahari. Then after under guidance of Sacinandana Gaurahari, we worship Radha Krsna. In this regard, we are chanting Gaura mantra, Gaura Gayatri. Without Sacinandana, Gaura mantra, Gaura Gayatri you not attain Krsna prema. First chant Gaura mantra and then Gaura Gayatri.

So now coming back to the subject; Vallabhacarya asked Rupa Goswamipada, ‘what grantha are you writing?’ He said, ‘I am writing Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu. Vallabhacarya said ‘what sloka are you writing?’

bhukti-mukti-spṛhā yāvat
piśācī hṛdi vartate
tāvad bhakti-sukhasyātra
katham abhyudayo bhavet

The material desire to enjoy the material world and the desire to become liberated from material bondage are considered to be two witches, and they haunt one like ghosts. As long as these witches remain within the heart, how can one feel transcendental bliss? As long as these two witches remain in the heart, there is no possibility of enjoying the transcendental bliss of devotional service.

BRS1.2.22/CC Madya 19.176

If you serve for bhukti, sense gratification and mukti, desire for liberation, how is it possible for suddha bhakti to manifest. Then Vallabhacarya said ‘Rupa, your slokas is very beautiful, nice, but in this sloka you compare mukti, liberation with the witch. Jnanis they perform hard austerities, following many rules and regulations. Are you saying jnanis are like a witch, muktis are like a witch and this is not a good example?’

Rupa Goswamipada is very humble, Rupa Goswamipada has the embodiment of trinad api sunicena.

Rupa Goswamipada said ‘prabhu, you are a learned scholar; in front of you I am nothing. You are like sun and I am like a small candle. So in my sloka if you see any defect, you can edit my sloka as you like. Then Vallabhacarya said ‘yes I can edit your slokas’. Then Vallabhacarya again said ‘now is too late. About midday I have to take bath in Yamuna then maybe tomorrow I will come and edit your grantha. If I see any faults or defects, anything that you have, I will check’.

If you write granthas many defects will come, siddhanta, this way, or maybe some slokas upside down and these things, this is true? We cannot manifest the perfect grantha.

In Sanskrit in many slokas there is some doubt, or something, this is nature. I remember Isvara Puripada came to the house of Jagannatha Misra. At that time Caitanya Mahaprabhu he was performing his lila with Nimai Pandita a very learned scholarly person. That time Isvara Puripada he wrote a grantha Sri Krsna lila grantha. That time Isvara Puripada said to Nimai you are very learned scholar and everyone calls you Nimai Pandita so please edit my grantha, if you find any mistake or faults. That time Caitanya Mahaprabhu said

You are Isvara Puripada! So Mahaprabhu said ‘how is it possible that I see your faults in your grantha?’ Mahaprabhu did not edit the grantha of Isvara Puri. So coming now in this way, Vallabhacarya he is very proud of his scholar knowledge, so he said ‘ok tomorrow I will come and edit your grantha’. At that time Rupa Goswamipada’s disciple; how many disciples Rupa Goswamipada have? One disciple! What is his name? Jiva Goswamipada. Jiva Goswamipada became very angry, very angry with Vallabhacarya. Disciples have so much loyalty with their Gurudeva and so much faith, nistha, so Jiva Goswamipada became very angry. My Gurudeva wrote these slokas, so how is he trying to find fault.

How is this possible? Disciple means so much loyalty. My Gurudeva has written this, so this is one hundred per cent perfect. Jiva Goswamipada, who was small at that time, he became very angry, but in front of his Guru he cannot say anything.

So Vallabhacarya left that place and went to take bath in the Yamuna. Then Jiva Goswamipada told to his Guru, ‘Gurudeva, today there is no water in the kitchen I have to go to fetch some water from the Yamuna’. Them Rupa Goswamipada told him ‘okay, you go and bring water’.

So Vallabhacarya he was taking bath in the Yamuna on the same step that Jiva Goswamipada came. Then Jiva Goswamipada starts to speak about Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu and what is the essence of Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu, what his Gurudeva wrote. Then he discussed this with Vallabhacarya. Then Jiva Goswamipada said ‘how is it possible you edit my Gurudeva grantha? That time Vallabhacarya said, ‘no your Guru, Rupa Goswami he compares mukti, liberation with the witch, this is not good. Then Jiva Goswami told him ‘no my Gurudeva is not saying these things, you read it properly, bhukti mukti sprha. Sprha means desire, that is called desire is compared with the witch’.

And this way Jiva Goswamipada very nicely in a grammatical way, he establishes that what my Gurudeva is writing is perfect, you cannot edit. Then Vallabhacarya realised this is true. Vallabhacarya then went directly from the Yamuna to the cottage of Rupa Goswamipada, and at the same time Jiva Goswamipada returned from the Yamuna. Then Vallabhacarya asked ‘who is this small boy?’

Rupa Goswamipada said’ I have two relationships with this boy. He is my nephew because Jiva Goswamipada father is my brother, so he is my nephew, and, he is also my disciple. That time Vallabhacarya said ‘your disciple is very intelligent and in just one second he defeated me, he has a vast knowledge of scriptures Vedas, Puranas, Upanisads everything’. He told Rupa ‘you wrote perfect slokas, I can not edit because your disciple defeated me, so how is it possible I can edit your books? It is impossible for me’. Rupa Goswamipada was not saying anything then Vallabhacarya he left the cottage of Rupa Goswamipada.

Then Rupa Goswamipada is very angry externally with Jiva Goswamipada. Then Rupa Goswamipada said ‘hey Jiva you are not qualified to stay close with me. What are the teachings of Caitanya Mahaprabhu?

tṛṇād api su-nīcena
taror iva sahiṣṇunā
amāninā māna-dena
kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ

One who thinks himself lower than the grass, who is more tolerant than a tree, and who does not expect personal honour but is always prepared to give all respect to others can very easily always chant the holy name of the Lord.
CC Antya 20.21

What is the teaching of Lord Caitanya? Give respect to others. Who is very proud, let him go to hell but give him respect. Vallabhacarya was very proud of his scholarly learning, everything, he came but you did not give respect you to him you defeated him. So how is it possible you chant? You can go anywhere, as you like’. What is the fault of Jiva Goswamipada? Who can explain? But Rupa Goswamipada is very angry and strict saying get out here, and Jiva Goswamipada he says ‘oh Gurudeva is not pleased with me, what to do?’

So Jiva Goswamipada said I will give up. He came to the bank of Yamuna where the crocodiles live. Then one day pass and Vrajavasi are asking Rupa where is Jiva, your disciple? But Rupa Goswamipada does not give any answer. And someone told Sanatana Goswamipada that a Vrajavasi, he saw a boy who is living in the hole of a crocodile on the bank of Yamuna. Then Sanatana Goswamipada went and saw Jiva Goswamipada crying and crying and chanting the Holy Names.

Sanatana Goswamipada very humbly said Jiva come with me’. Sanatana Goswamipada brought Jiva Goswamipada in front of Rupa Goswamipada. Sanatana Goswamipada is a very prominent scholar person and also everyone gives respect to him. So when Sanatana Goswamipada came in the cottage of Rupa Goswamipada, he was very humble and paid his obeisances to lotus feet of his elder brother Sanatana Goswamipada. Then Sanatana Goswamipada asked Rupa, what is the teaching of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu? What is the teaching of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu?

Jiva doya! Mahaprabhu said give mercy to the all living entities. Rupa said ‘yes this is true. Give mercy to the all fallen living entities’, this is the teaching of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Every person that came to you doing bhajana and sadhana, how is it possible not giving mercy to him? This is the teaching of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Jiva doya! You give the mercy to the Jiva and he is the Jiva’. Sanatana Goswamipada said ‘you keep him again’, and then Rupa Goswamipada and Jiva Goswamipada they meet together again and they are shedding tears.

Maybe your question will come, why was Rupa Goswamipada angry with his disciple? And what are the faults of Jiva Goswamipada? What is the fault of Jiva Goswami? Rupa Goswamipada was angry with him. Here Rupa Goswamipada explains, give respect to others, and let him give name, fame reputation. And Jiva Goswamipada says ‘no, anyone who criticises my Guru I have to give heavy punishment’. There are many slokas, if anybody that criticizes my Guru I have to give him heavy punishments.

Sastra says cut his tongue. These are very heavy slokas. And another interpretation is cut his philosophy and if you have no knowledge of sastra jnana, never met his face again, take bath at Yamuna or Ganges and purify that place with the water. A Disciple means what? If my Guru is perfect bonafide, then never give up Guru and never give up Hare Nama.

mannatha sri jagannatha madguru sri jagadguru madatma sarvabhutatma tasmai sri gurave namah

My Lord is the Lord of the Universe. My Guru is the Guru of the whole world. My soul is of all beings, therefore I offer pranam to that Sri Gurudeva who has shown me this.
(Skanda Purana)

My Guru Vamana Goswami Maharaja always says this verse.

Sometimes I also chastise a little bit. Guru is not like your boyfriend and girlfriend? One day you have a boyfriend then the next day you give up, and then another day another boyfriend. Guru is not this, Guru is eternal, transcendental. Sambandha-jnana.

You can change other things but you can not change your Guru. Guru is bonafide in any circumstance you cannot change. There are many slokas, there are many kinds of offence of committed sinful activities and there are no many kinds of atonement, but there is not any kind of atonement for one who gives up the Guru. Raghunatha dasa Goswami he took diska from Yadunandana Acarya but he took siksa from Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Svarupa Damodara, Raya Ramananda, Sanatana Goswamipada, even finally he took siksa from Rupa Goswamipada, but he only glorifies only his Guru, Yadunandana Acarya.

nama-srestham manum api saci-putram atra svarupam
rupam tasyagrajam uru-purim mathurim gostavatim
radha-kundam giri-varam aho radhika-madhavasam
prapto yasya prathita-krpaya sri gurum tam nato ‘smi

I am fully indebted to Sri Gurudeva. Why? He has given me so many things: the highest conception of the holy name of Krsna; the highest form of sound, which contains the highest form of thought, inspiration, ideal everything. And he has given me the service of our great saviour Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and his dearmost assistant Sri Svarupa Damodara. He has brought me in connection with Sri Rupa, who was ordered to distribute the heart’s innermost dealings, the highest devotional love, raganuga bhakti.

Gurudeva has given me Srila Sanatana Goswami, who gives us sambandha-jnana, proper understanding of our relationship with Sri Krsna, and he has given me Mathura Mandala, which will help me in my remembrance of Radha and Govinda wherever I shall cast my glance. By his grace, Gurudeva has revealed the super excellent position of Radha Kunda, the favorite place of Radha and Govinda for Their pastimes and this Giriraja Govardharna. Lastly he has given me the hope that one day I can get the service of Sri Sri Radhika and Madhava. I have been given all these assurances by my Gurudeva, so I bow my head with respects to his lotus feet.

SriMukta-carita Raghunatha dasa Goswami

Raghunatha dasa glorified his Diska Guru, Yadunandana Acarya. If you think that my Gurudeva is maybe less intelligent and I am highly intelligent you can take Diksa from him and take Siksa from any bonafide Guru. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura explains you can give up your Guru if three faults are there. If your Guru is an impersonalist, mayavadi, give up that Guru and take shelter at the lotus feet of a bonafide Vaisnava Guru. If your Guru is always criticising Vaisnavas, committing Vaisnava aparadha, give up that stupid nonsense Guru, who criticises Vaisnavas, and commitsVaisnava aparadha. And the third condition is if your Guru illegally associated with ladies or is married; give up that Guru, stupid nonsense no concession. Mahaprabhu did not give that concession to Acyuta Haridas.

If your Guru is Vaisnava, a Vaisnava Guru then under any circumstances you cannot give up your Guru. Once a devotee said ‘oh Gurudeva, if the cow does not give milk, what will I do?’ That means if your Guru has not given the highest prema bhakti, what will you do? Srila Gurudeva, in his morning walk he was also asked this question, and it is in the book ‘Walking with a Saint’. What do you do if your Guru is not giving you highest prema bhakti?

If you think according to your knowledge this is not a high-class Guru, what are you to do? But Guru is Vaisnava following the four principles, doing bhajana and sadhana. If the cow will not give milk what will you to do? People are thinking cut it and eat meat if the cow is not giving milk, in western philosophy, cut, send it to the slaughterhouse and eat meat. Gurudeva is not saying this. If the cow is not giving milk, okay keep it and then you can bring another cow. This is Indian culture. If your cow is not giving the milk you cannot ever give up that cow, you just keep in and then bring another cow.

So in the same way, if your Guru is not able to give you highest prema to you, you should not give up Guru. What to do? You take diksa from him and take siksa from another bonafide Guru. That means siksa. You take like Brajanatha and Vijay Kumar. They took diksa and then in Jagannatha Puri took siksa from Babaji Maharaja, but they do not give up their Guru. As Raghunatha das Goswami did not give up his Guru Yadunandana Acarya, but he took siksa from Svarupa Damodara, Raya Ramananda even from Rupa Goswami. This is the process.

So in this way, this is the story of Jiva Goswamipada and Rupa Goswamipada. Sanatana Goswamipada said ‘hey Rupa, Jiva has no fault. He’s established the tattva siddhanta you wrote is perfect, so how is it possible that this scholarly person can cut your philosophy’.

Once, in Mathura, an impersonalist came, a mayavadi came, and that time that mayavadi he also discussed with Param Gurudeva Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Maharaja, that the jiva is Brahma. Then Srila Gurudeva Narayana Goswamipada Maharaja was sitting there. Then Srila Gurudeva Narayana Goswamipada Maharaja said ‘Krsna did not only lift Giriraja Govardharn but He also drank the forest fire.

So Srila Gurudeva said ‘are you Brahma?’ And the mayavadi said ‘yes, all of you are Brahma, you are Brahma, and I’m Brahma, all you are Brahma’. At that time Param Gurudeva said ‘now bring me one burning stick and put it in his mouth because he is Brahma’. Then Srila Gurudeva brought a burning stick and the mayavadi went out.

Are you Krsna? If someone says I’m Brahma okay, so come here. Krsna is Bhagavan Brahma, so if you are Brahma, then both are Brahma. Krsna, which is also written in Srimad Bhagavatam, took the forest fire, so you take the fire also.

Gurudeva said at that time where Param Gurudeva was staying many mayavadis, came, and he defeated them all. So in this same way Jiva Goswamipada, he was perfect. How is it possible what my Gurudeva has written that there are any defects? This is one hundred per cent perfect. There are no defects, no faults in what my Gurudeva wrote. What Guru is saying, sometimes you may not understand, but this is another thing. What Guru says is perfect.

So in this way, these are teachings of Rupa Goswamipada and Jiva Goswamipada. Jiva Goswamipada he wrote many granthas also and especially six sandarbhas and cut all mayavadi philosophy and established Krsna bhakti. Jiva Goswamipada wrote Tattva-sandarbha, Bhagavata-sandarbha, Paramatma-sandarbha, Krishna-sandarbha, Bhakti-sandarbha, Priti-sandarbha
