Gundica marjan

Today is a very auspicious day, because tomorrow originally we will celebrate the Ratha Yatra in Jagannath-puri. So a day before Jagannath Ratha Yatra in Jagannath-puri they also cleaned the temple of Gundica.

I told you that Indradyumna Maharaj actually manifested this vigraha of Jagannath, Baladev, and Subhadra. So, Jagannath, Baladev, Subadra always staying in Jagannath temple.

Once a year Lord Jagannath He comes out and He goes from Jagannath temple to Gundica temple. That is called Sundarachal. And this temple name is called Gundica, means the queen of Indradyumna Maharaj. Indradyumna Maharaj, he built this temple for the remembrance of his queen Gundica devi. And Lord only once a year comes out and goes to Gundica Devi temple, and He lives there for nine days.

After nine days again Lord Jagannath returns back to Jagannath temple. So that means that only for nine days that temple worships Lord Jagannath, and in the whole year it is completely empty; no one living, nothing.

You know, that if in your house no one is living, in about a few days or few months, automatically your house will be full of dust. In the same way, in about one year nobody is living in that temple, Gundica temple, so Gundica temple is completely full of dust, sand and small stones too. For this regard the day before Ratha Yatra the brahmanas and pandas also clean that temple with water and other things. Actually, in gaudiya language, they are doing dvapaka, that means “cleaning the temple”. But Srila Krsnadasa Kaviraj Gosvami in Caitanya Caritamrta very nicely explains the mood of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, how Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu cleaned that temple of Gundica. That is called Gundica Marjan lila.

In this lila, there are two lila’s in there, one is called external lila and another is called internal lila. According to the mood of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the internal lila is very confidential, because Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is always absorbed in the separation mood of Srimati Radhika. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu is thinking: “I am Radha, now my beloved Krsna will come in Vrndavan”. So Srimati Radhika is thinking: “If I did not clean my kunja for Krsna, then He will not be happy”.

Srila Jiv Gosvamipad in Sandarbha explains that cleaning that temple means cleaning the kunja of Krsna and Srimati Radhika. So in this way Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that means Srimati Radhika, anyhow She heard that Krsna is coming to Vrndavan, so She called all Her sakhis: “We have to clean our kunja”. Because when Krsna left Vrndavan to Mathura, at that time all Vrajavasis felt pangs of separation from Krsna. And from that day on Vrajavasis even did not cook anything in their kitchen or nothing. For this regard in their kitchen room, and so their ovens are completely covered with dust and also have nets of a spider. Because Krsna is the heart and life of the Vrajavasis but if Krsna is not in Vrndavan, so why the Vrajavasis will cook? For whom? So for this regard, our scriptures also explain, when Krsna left Vrindavan, from that day on the Vrajavasis did not cook anything for themselves.

Then you can question me, “but how did they live? How they are alive in their bodies?” Our Gosvamis explain that, actually, Yogamaya arranged for them how to survive in their bodies.

Krsna Himself told to Uddhava, especially about the vrajagopis: (Verse).

“The gopis gave up everything for Me, even the rules and regulation of Vedanta”. So when Krsna left Vrndavan, from that day on Vraja gopis actually did not return back from the forest, and they were staying in the forest and always absorbed in Krsna. They are also shedding tears, remembering Krsna. They are completely transcendental mad. Even the kunjas of Vrndavan are completely dry, with no flowers blossoming, full of dust. Because they (the gopis used to) clean the kunja for Krsna, decorate that kunja only for Krsna, but Krsna is not in Vrndavan, why will they decorate it to Krsna?

But now, anyhow Srimati Radhika heard that Krsna is coming and for Krsna’s pleasure Srimati Radhika and all Her sakhis clean the kunja. This is called “the perfect love”: (Verse).

In Caitanya Caritamrta it is explained: Love is not looking his own happiness. Love is always looking his own istadev’s happiness.

So Krsna is coming, Krsna actually is the istadev of the Vrajavasis. So when Srimati Radhika knows that Krsna is coming, then Srimati Radhika calls all Her sakhis and cleans the temple, while shedding tears. Because if Krsna cames and see all the kunja full of dust, then Krsna will not be happy. So for this regard, Srimati Radhika cleans the kunja with all Her sakhis. For Krsna‘s pleasure. Bhakti, suddha bhakti means: Annukula means all of our endeavors should be exclusively for the pleasure of Krsna. So actually this is the very deep meaning of that Gundica temple´s cleaning.

Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu with His all internal associators. External Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu He took all His associators and clean the temple of Gundica Devi. And Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu in this way teaching to us how we will clean our temple of heart. Because our heart is as like mandir means “temple“, and our mind is as like chariot. So if our heart is full of dust, that means, that is called anartha: unwanted things, lust, anger. How possible Lord will sit there? Because unlimited time conditioned souls are wandering in the cycle of death, birth, and death. So in their heart thousand thousand lives different different kinds of bad impressions. And lust, anger, many things, is not easy to clean our mind. Give an example, if your cloth little bit dust, very easy you can clean. And same cloth very dirty, you will take oil remover, not easy to clean. In the cloth full of dust, oil, it is not so easy to clean that cloth. Hundred times of the clean, then that cloth maybe clean, but a bad smell will come. So in the same way conditioned soul wander in the cycle of death and birth and death, thousand thousand times wandering in the cycle of same repeated birth and death. Different different impressions, lust, anger in their heart. Not easy to clean. But if your heart is not neat and clean, and sweet smell not coming, Lord will not sit also. Easy to give that example. If the cloth is very dirty, you can throw and take one new cloth. But your mind? How you will take the new mind? Very difficult. Generally, when this body will become old, then give up the body and you can take a new body. Understand? This is called the gross body. Every life we give up the gross body. But never we give up the subtle body. The subtle body is there, what is there? Mind, intelligence, egos, and heart. Actually, in this body two bodies, two clothes are there: one is called the gross body, is one cloth, and another cloth, that is called subtle body, that is also one cloth, that is very, very hard to clean. If in our gross body, if any defect, very easy to repair. The gross body is our limbs and body.

Now medicines, they planted many things, if your eyes not working, they implanted your eyes taking another‘s eyes and implanted here, heart implanted, many things. But modern science can not plant your subtle body, mind, intelligence, egos, and heart. So now coming in this way Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu teaching in this way how to clean our subtle body. Because our heart is like a light temple, that is called hrdaya mandir, the temple of the heart. If our mandir is not neat and clean, Lord will never sit. But conditioned souls means is what? His heart completely full of dust. Mahaprabhu for this regard says in this way (Verse). The only thing is the chanting of the Holy Names. Then slowly slowly our mind will be neat and clean. Only this is the one process. Without chanting Holy Names your hrdaya mundi, the temple of your heart never will be cleaned. Holy Name is our Krsna consciousness medical hall, medical store only one kind of medicine that is called Hari Nam. There is no any other alternative medicine. In this material world the medical store different different kinds of medicine, but this store of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu medical store only one medical, one medicine-Hari Nam. HARE KRSNA HARE KRSNA KRSNA KRSNA HARE HARE/ HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE. Sadhu Sanga, Nam Sankirtan, Mahaprabhu said.

You take this medicine with Sadhu Sanga. Without Sadhu Sanga also this medicine will not get the proper result. But Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu externally showing how to clean the temple of Gundica Devi. (Verse).

In this verse, Lord Krsnadasa Kaviraja Goswami explains that Gaurasundara with His own internal associates clean the Sri Gundica temple and showing how our heart will be neat and clean, and so much calm coming. And that time in the heart of temple how Krsna will sit. So now coming in this way the day before this Ratha Yatra Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu very humble asked, “I want to clean Gundica temple with my associates”. And then the king Prataparudra arranged everything for Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu´s desire: “What do you need to clean the temple?“ Because if you need to clean that temple you need a broom, water pot, clothes. So king Prataparudra he arranges everythings\, then Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu took all His devotees and arrived in Gundica temple, and chanting Holy Names, doing Nam Sankirtan. Because Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu teaching to us if we do everything without Nam Sankirtan, your endeavors will not be successful. Our sastras saying: (Verse). Nam Sankirtan the beginning, the middle, also and the last. All this is Nam Sankirtan.

That means Hari Nam is called Sadhan, process, and Hari Nam is also called the goal. So Hari Nam is very powerful, especially in this age of Kali. Lord manifested His all Potency in Holly Names. First Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He gave respect to the all the devotees. In His own hand, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu offer the garland to all devotees and put the sand of their foot on the head. Then Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself first brooming in the temple.

Today I told that one year temple completely closed, so inside full of dust. So Lord Caitanya first He cleans the dust with the broom. Even in a ceiling full of dust. And also floor full of dust, and two sides of the walls, all full of dust. Even outside the temple completely full of dust, and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself cleaning that temple. Then all devotees also followed Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu (the word at 36:39 ?) and cleaned the temple. And Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself clean Lord Jagannath and Baladev sitting.

In this way thousands of thousand devotees also clean. There are three kinds of servants of Lord, Bhagavad sevak. One is called uttam sevak, another is called madhyam sevak, and another is called kanistha sevak. Uttam sevak, one who knows the Heart of Guru and Krsna, he serves, that is called Uttam sevak. Madhyam seva is an intermediate sevak. When his Ista Dev giving orders and he serves, that is called Madhyam sevak. The neophyte devotee, if you give him order, sometimes he will do, sometimes not. That is called neophyte devotee. Kanistha sevak. So now coming in this way Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu noticed who was serving and who was not serving. Some Kanistha sevak they are thinking: “Oh many also are here serving so I can take rest, just sometimes doing and sometimes not”. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to kanistha sevak and said: “Oooh, you are doing very nice”. That means: “Your service is not very good”.

In this way, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu did it sweetly. At that time that Kanistha sevak, he becomes very shy and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu taught him how to properly serve. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu told: “When you serve, you have to chant Holy Names: HARE KRSNA HARE KRSNA KRSNA KRSNA HARE HARE/ HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE”.

Then Mahaprabhu told: “Who is doing hard work? How much dust had you collected? Because here is full of dust, so you were cleaning it or not? Everybody has to collect the dust, so then I will see how much dust you collected and how much hard work you did”.

At that time every devotees, they also collected the dust, but that time Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He collected a lot, that means Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu serves nicely and did hard work. Then, after cleaning the dust, then Lord Caitanya had to collect the small stones inside there because some stones you can not clean with the broom. You have to collect with your hand. And Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself collected the dust and stone, and taking with His own clothes and throw very far from that temple. (Verse).

In this way, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself took all dust, stones and throw very far from the temple. Actually this the teaching is that in our heart many kinds of unwanted things, anarthas are there: (verse). Anartha means is what? Unwanted things. Duskrti uthanatha means that in your previous life you had committed many kinds of sinful activities, for this regard that kind of unwanted things came in our heart. Sukrti uthanatha means previous life performing very pious activities, also that are obstacles of bhakti, that is called sukrti uthanatha. Bhakti uthanatha, in the beginning, perform the bhakti.

When our heart is not completely free from all kinds of unwanted things, anarthas, Bhakti Devi will not manifest. And especially what? In our heart lust, anger, unfairness, even the desire for name, fame, reputation. So how to clean our heart? Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, again and again, showing this lila how to clean our hrdaya temple, the temple of heart. Then again Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu told to bring water the pond, so all devotees brought the water with the pot and pour water all over that temple and again and again cleaning and cleaning. Three times, four times, five times, ten times Lord Caitanya was cleaning and cleaning with the water. Then after cleaning, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw some also line in the stone, little bit small lines in the stone, also some dust there. And Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself took His own uttali (clothes) and cleaned the small, small dust in there. Actually, what is that? In our heart many kinds of desires, desires for liberation, mukti. Maybe you have to know that there four types of mukti in your heart, sometimes you cannot see by yourself: salokya, sarsti, samipya, and sarupya. These types of mukti, these are mukti in the hearts of the devotees sometimes. Even in some types of opulence mood in the heart of the devotee, that is called aisvarya bhava-opulence mood towards Lord. So if you have opulence mood towards Krsna, then you won´t be able to go to Vrndavan. If you want to go to Vrndavan, you need that your mind become neat and clean and full of madhurya bhava, that is called sweetness mood. If you want to go to Goloka Vrndavana, not so easy, there are many process, step by step, sadhu sanga, bhajana kriya, anartha nivritti, nistha, ruci, asakti, then bhava and prema, … this is a long process.

So now coming in this way Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu showing how to clean our hrdaya mandir, the temple of our heart. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself cleaned the Jagannam, the place where Lord Jagannath sits, the simhasana, the top place. And that place only senior devotees are there: Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda, Advaita, Svarupa Damodara, Bharati and Puri. So all devotees, they are caring the water and giving to Svarupa Damodara, and he with others cleaning the simhasana, where Jagannath will sit. And all the devotees so much enthusiastic in serving the temple of Gundica.

And all they are chanting Holly Names: HARE KRSNA HARE KRSNA KRSNA KRSNA HARE HARE/ HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE. And at that time one also Gaudiya simple-hearted boy took water and throw to the Lotus Feet of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. That Gaudiya Vaisnava, he is very simple, he throw the water at the Lotus Feet of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and he was drinking that full bathing water of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. (Verse)

That simple boy took water and throw to the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and again that full bathing water from Lord Caitanya, and then drank this. And that time Mahaprabhu become very angry. Mahaprabhu told Svarupa Damodara: “Look, here, this Vaisnava, he is taking my full bathing water. He will go to hell. And I will go also to hell. Here is Lord Jagannath temple, I am serving, and he is taking My full bathing water!!”

Then Krsnadasa Kaviraja Goswami said:“(Verse) Internally, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was very happy, but externally Lord Caitanya become very angry because Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to establish the dharma. Sometimes devotees cannot understand the heart of his Guru and Krsna. And sometimes also devotee and non-devotee, they cannot understand. They committed offenses unto the Lotus Feet of Guru and Krsna. Do you understand these things? You may not understand, but this is true. Sometimes those who are not disciples, and disciple and non-disciple staying together and worship Guru, then those non-disciples will criticize, because they stay in the back, criticizing: “Oh, he is not a real Guru. Why are you worshiping this Guru?“ And this is called offense – aparadha. For this regard, a bona fide Guru does not want to receive anything in the public place, when His disciples worship His arati, but anybody likes, other‘s they will commit offenses aparadha. They should worship the Lotus Feet of Guru in a confident place. If Guru gives an order, this is another question. Or otherwise sometimes also name, fame, reputation will come. One can think:“Oh, I‘m performing my Guru puja”. Going in this way for name, fame, reputation. Actually, he has no Guru-nistha, Guru bhakti, nothing. The disciple is just showing it externally. This is the process also. If a disciple is not perfect, Guru realize if he is only pretending. Then after a couple years, a couple months, few years, no disciple, nothing, all disappear. In the beginning, so much enthusiasm coming. Guru knows everything. This is only his enthusiastic showing. But when Guru accepts His disciples´Guru puja, then He realize: “Yes, now my disciple is perfect. He will never give up”. Guru puja is not only a baby toy, this is very confidential in your spiritual life. So you know, first do bhajan and sadhan, first, you come to the stage of nistha. Do bhajan and sadhan. And you have to sacrifice everything for your Guru. So here Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu showing in this way, because that Gaudiya Vaisnava boy, he was completely neophyte. He is taking the full bathing water of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, so Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu became very angry. But other devotees, they also took Caitanya Mahaprabhu full bathing water, but secretly, not showing to others, because Lord Caitanya is Bhagavan.

These things… But they are not showing in front of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu: “I‘m taking Your full bathing water”. So Svarupa Damodara got out to talk to that boy outside the temple. And that very simple boy when he came, he was afraid, then Svarupa Damodara said to him: “Oh, you did very nice! But you should not take the full bathing water of Lord Caitanya in front of Him…”

This is the process. I‘m taking full bathing of my Guru and showing to Him: “Look, how much I have my Guru bhakti”. That is called pretending. So in this way, there are many teaching for us, about how neophyte devotee should behave with Guru, and how senior and advanced devotee should behave with Guru. Mahaprabhu also told: (Verse).

In this way, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu perform sweet lila in Gundica temple. And again all very enthusiastic worshiped the temple of Gundica. And at that time the temple was completely neat and clean like crystal. As the sunlight reflected there. At that time Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was showing in this way how we should clean our heart, because our heart is full of dust. Not in this life, but in thousands of thousands of lifes, different, different kinds of lust, anger, this is called, big stones are there. Then dust, many kinds of anarthas was there. But that temple now is completely neat and clean, again Lord Caitanya took His uttali (clothes) and cleaning everywhere.

Because I again tell, if in our heart there is any desire for liberation, mukti, Bhakti devi will not manifest. (Verse) Manah Siksa by Srila Kavirajadasa Gosvami Maharaj explain: (Verse). The desire for mukti, is like the mouth of a tiger. Even Vaikuntha Katha if you have so much attachment with Vaikuntha, then you are not qualified to go to Vrndavan. So what to do? Only absorb in Vraj Rasik Katha (Verse).

Always remember Vraja and Radha-Krsna sweet pastimes. And again and again your heart will be clean and chanting the Holy Names. Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur also explains how we should clean our heart and clean from all kinds of anarthas. Bhaktivinoda Thakur again explains that four kinds of anartha are there. That is called svarupa brahman and aparadha. Svarupa brahman is the desire of your own transcendental form. Who are you? If I ask who are you, you don‘t know. You will give me answers like: “I am a man, I am a woman”. But who are you? You are the eternal servant of Lord Krsna. Now we have this knowledge, is not common. Mahaprabhu said: (Verse). We are servant of the servant of the servant of Krsna, who is the beloved of Gopis. But this mood will come in the stage of bhava. So, do bhajan and sadhan, chanting the Holy Names, then slowly, slowly you will realize yourselves, your own svarupa. Who are you? There are many kinds of illusion. This is very difficult to explain to you. If I speak you cannot understand. It is very difficult to speak. But if you read sastra, then you will understand. You commited aparadha, offences, not this life, previous life, thousands of thousands of lives you committed many, many kinds of offenses: Nama aparadha, Dham aparadha, Vaisnava aparadha, Seva aparadha, not so easy to understand that “I am the servant of Krsna, I am not this body”. Now all you know – I am this body. Bodily conception is the symptom of the conditioned soul, completely absorbed in this body: “I am this body”. This bodily conception will not go away just in one day. It is a process, step by step chanting the Holy Names: HARE KRSNA HARE KRSNA KRSNA KRSNA HARE HARE/ HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE.

Chant the Holy Names. This bodily conception, not one day, and not in one life, very difficult, this bodily conception is very strong, concrete. But again and again chanting the Holy Names, then, our heart that is like a mirror will be clean. If your mirror is not clean, full of dust, you cannot see your own reflection. In the same way, how will we clean our heart? Bad impressions are there. But again chanting Holy Names: HARE KRSNA HARE KRSNA KRSNA KRSNA HARE HARE/ HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE. This is the first step. In chanting Holy Names are seven steps . Step by step how we‘ll clean our heart and realize our own transcendental form. So in this way, cleaning the temple of Gundica devi Mahaprabhu taught us internally and externally how to clean our heart. And then Lord Jagannath and Krsna will sit in our temple of heart, hrdaya mandir.

Gaur Premanande! Hari Hari bol!
