I thought no one would attend today since Sao Paolo carnival is going on and it is also raining heavily. But despite this, you have still come. Because today is a very super, excellent auspicious day, the appearance day of nitya lila pravishta om vishnupada ashtottara shata Shri Shrimad Bhaktisiddhanta Shrila Sarasvati Prabhupada. He originally established all of our Gaudiya Maths. Today is also the disappearance day of nitya lila pravishta om vishnupada ashtottara shata Shrila Gour Govinda Goswami Maharaja. He was a very prominent acharya. Nitya lila pravishta om vishnupada ashtottara shata Shrila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja had so many disciples. But Gour Govinda Goswami Maharaja was his topmost disciple. His tattva-siddhanta, shastra-siddhanta, guru-nishtha, guru-bhakti is known as incomparable. He was also a rasika-acharya. Gurudev, Shrila Narayana Goswami Maharaja, in one of his classes also explained, “Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja’s mood and his conception of scriptures and my mood and conceptions are the same.” I also had the opportunity to take darshan of his lotus feet in Jagannatha Puri. When Gurudev was in Jagannatha Puri, Gour Govinda Maharaja came and met with Shrila Gurudev. He discussed many tattva-siddhanta regarding Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, rasa-vichar siddhanta, dhama, Vrindavana and many topics with Gurudev.

His books, granthas very nicely and elaborately explain all tattva-siddhantas and explain the conceptions of our previous acharyas and guru vargas. Vishvanatha Chakravartipada, Jiva Goswamipada, Rupa Goswamipada, all of their conceptions, vichar, he very nicely and elaborately explained them in his granthas. Our acharya’s characteristics, vaishishta, can be understood by just reading his books. We have not met with Rupa Goswamipada, Sanatana Goswamipada, Raghunatha Dasa Goswamipada, but when we are reading their granthas, Rupa Goswamipada’s granthas, such as Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, Ujjvala-nilamani, Vidagdha-madhava, and Lalita-madhava. Sanatana Goswamipada’s granthas such as, Brihad-bhagavatamritam grantha or Jiva Goswamipada’s Six, Sat Sandarbhas. After reading you can then understand their personality, tattva-vichar and rasa-vichar is in there. There are two kinds of bhagavats, grantha-bhagavat and the other is called bhakta-bhagavat. So our acharyapada manifested all of the moods and conceptions of our previous acharyas, guru vargas, in their granthas.

Similarly, if you read Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja’s granthas, then you will understand he is also a great personality. You must especially read his two granthas, Mathura meets with Vrindavana and Embankment of Separation which speaks on Chaitanaya Mahaprabhu’s separation mood. He very nicely explained how in Jagannathа Puri, at the same time, two separations, vigrahas are there. In his grantha, The Embarkment of Separation, he explained that in Jagannathа Puri, simultaneously there are two separation moods, vigrahas. One is called Krishna-viraha-vidurа-Radha and the other is Radha-viraha-vidurа-Krishna. Krishna is feeling separation from Srhimati Radhika, that is called Jagannathаdev. At the same time, Krishna appeared as Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, absorbed in the mood of Shrimati Radhika, He is feeling separation from Krishna. Then you can understand, what kinds of prema are found inside there. What does acharyadev mean? He explained all these moods, bhavas in his grantha. Spontaneously coming from the inner core of his heart, he manifested them in this grantha. For this regard, in Chaitanya-charitamrita, Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami explains –

siddhānta baliyā citte nā kara alasa
ihā ha-ite kṛṣṇe lāge sudṛḍha mānasa

(Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi 2.117)

[“A sincere student should not neglect the discussion of such conclusions, considering them controversial, for such discussions strengthen the mind. Thus one’s mind becomes attached to Śrī Kṛishṇa”.]

Don’t be lazy to enter in tattva-siddhanta of the scriptures. Then your mind will be fixed on Krishna consciousness. You must learn some shlokas, shastras, to enter in deep philosophy. Also one thing, if you only acquire some knowledge, then your mind may just become more disturbed.  Enter in tattva-siddhanta and simultaneously practice your bhajana and sadhana. Jiva Goswamipada in Sandarbhas explains conceptions of the scriptures, tattva-siddhanta, that is foundation of our bhajana and sadhana. If you build a ten or twelve story building, but your foundation is not strong. What will happen one day? The building will fall. In the same way, Jiva Goswamipada, explained tattva-siddhanta is the foundation of our bhajana and sadhana and rasa-madhurya is called the big building. Do you understand? You have to enter in tattva-siddhanta. What is krishna-tattva, jiva-tattva, maya-tattva, bhakti-tattva, vaishnava-tattva, guru-tattva? You have to learn all tattvas. For this regard, all of our acharyas, vaishnavas and gurus have manifested a vast of granthas. Try to understand. 

You are practising bhakti. Are you practising bhakti or not? So you have to learn the meaning of bhakti. What is the definition of bhakti? There are many definitions of bhakti‘Sā parānuraktir-īśvare iti bhakti’. Deep attachment with the Lord, that is called bhakti. Do you understand?

sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaṁ
tat-paratvena nirmalam
hṛṣīkeṇa hṛṣīkeśa-
sevanaṁ bhaktir ucyate

(Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya 19.170)

[“Bhakti, or devotional service, means engaging all our senses in the service of the Lord, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of all the senses. When the spirit soul renders service unto the Supreme, there are two side effects. One is freed from all material designations, and one’s senses are purified simply by being employed in the service of the Lord”.]

This is also a definition of bhakti. ‘Anyābhilāṣita…’ What is the top most definition of bhakti?

anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ
jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam
ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu-
śīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā

(Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya 19.167)

[“When first-class devotional service develops, one must be devoid of all material desires, knowledge obtained by monistic philosophy, and fruitive action. The devotee must constantly serve Kṛiṣhṇa favorably, as Kṛiṣhṇa desires”.]

Pure devotional service to the Lord. What I am trying to say is if you are practising bhakti, you have to learn the definition of bhakti. Understand? Otherwise karmis, jnanis, yogis may disturb your mind by saying, “No, you have to perform karma.” Do you understand? Yesterday I mentioned how Bhakti Prajnana Keshava Goswami Maharaja preached against the Rama Krishna Mission. Actually, they are called karma-margasadhus. So you must learn shastra-siddhanta. Why is bhakti the topmost process? Shrila Rupa Goswamipada wrote Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu and Ujjvala-nilamani grantha. If you do not read these granthas, books then your mind will be not fixed. Try to understand. Bhakti is not so cheap. Bhakti is very, very valuable. For this regard, you must enter in tattva-siddhanta. Because of this Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja wrote many granthas.

Some of his godbrothers would put a peacock feather on the head of Chaitanya Mahaprabu. Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja told, “No, don’t put a peacock feather on the head of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. You should not disturb the mood of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.” Because some were thinking, “Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna and Krishna keeps a peacock feather on His head. Why does Chaitanya Mahaprabhu not put a peacock feather?” Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna, this is true. But what is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s mood? Bhakta-bhava kari’ angikara. Krishna avatirna haila gaura rupa. Krishna accepts Shrimati Radhika’s mood and Her complexion and manifests in the form of Shachinandana Gaurahari. So Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja wrote these things, “Don’t disturb the mood of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.” This are some of his contributions. So Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja’s granthas are always perfect. Some his godbrothers also said, “Oh, jivas fall down from Vaikuntha.” Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja would reply, “No, jivas never fall down from Vaikuntha.” Why am I mentioning this? Because Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja is a great personality. He established shudda-bhakti and the conceptions of our guru-parampara. Otherwise, Gaura-nagari kathawould have come. Some apa sampradayas are thinking, “Krishna performed rasa dance, so Chaitanya Mahaprabhu should also perform in the same way.” But this is not true. Apa sampradayas discuss different philosophies, but Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja cut their philosophies and established our guru vargas’ perfect philosophy.

He would always discuss Vraja katha, Vraja mood. Do you understand? We should have a Vraja mood, always going towards Vraja. What did Rupa Goswamipada write in Upadeshamrita? What is the essence of all my advice, instructions?

tan-nama-rupa-caritadi-sukirtananu-
smrtyoh kramena rasana-manasi niyojya
tisthan vraje tad-anuragi-jananugami
kalam nayed akhilam ity upadesa-saram

(Shri Upadeshamrita, verse 8)

[“While living in Vraja as a follower of the eternal residents of Vraja (Sri Guru and the six Gosvamis) who possess inherent spontaneous love for Sri Krishna, one should utilize all his time by sequentially engaging the tongue and the mind in meticulous chanting and remembrance of Krishna’s names, form, qualities and pastimes. This is the essence of all instructions.”]

Rupa Goswamipada very clearly explained Gaudiya Vaishnava, those who are coming in the line of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, their mood is going towards Vrindavana, Vraja mood. Advanced devotees, such as Raghunatha Dasa Goswami received instructions from Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. What did He instruct?

‘mane’ nija-siddha-deha kariyā bhāvana
rātri-dine kare vraje kṛṣṇera sevana

(Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya 22.157)

[…within his mind, in his original, purified, self-realized position, he serves Kṛishṇa in Vṛndāvana in his particular way. He serves Kṛiṣhṇa twenty-four hours a day, all day and night. ]

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu told Raghunatha, “Listen to my last and final instruction.” ‘Mane’ nija-siddha-deha – In your mind always realize your transcendental constitutional form, siddhadeha, and absorb day and night in the ashta-kaliya lilas of Radha and Krishna.” Actually, these are very high level stages, but still an instruction of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Guru and vaishnava have two forms. Do you understand? Two forms. Gurudev has two forms, one is called a sadhaka form and the other is called siddha. Try to understand. Sadhaka rupena siddha rupena catra hi.Shrila Rupa Goswamipada wrote this verse in Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu. Sadhaka rupena, in the sadhaka form he is chanting holy names,  ‘Sańkhyā-pūrvaka-nāma-gāna-natibhiḥ’. Or in his siddha form, always absorbed in the highest ashta-kaliya lilas, pastimes of Radha and Krishna. Shrila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja, today in the appearance day of Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada, was giving some harikatha with devotees about highest mood of the divine couple, Radha and Krishna, viraha-bhava. Then a couple minutes after, he left his body. If you read his life history, you will see how he gave this harikatha in his room with some guests and devotees. He spoke how Shrimati Radhika felt bank of separation from Krishna, Krishna viraha. Then he left his body.

Bhaktisiddhanta Shrila Sarasvati Prabhupada wrote on his Nectar of Instruction, “Our life will be successful, if before giving up this body we are speaking harikatha.”  One day will we all die or not? Who will not die? Raise your hand. No one. This is certain, but we don’t know when or how. Death is certain. But also what? Death is also unknown. When will we die? We don’t know. We can die at any moment. But we don’t want to die. Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja told, “Kim ascaryam – What is the wonderful thing in this material world?” All of us are thinking, “Oh we will not die, maybe we will die after 100 years, but not today or not tomorrow.” Everyday you see how many people die. They are all suffering the three folds of maya. But we still think, “I will not die.” At any second, death will come at any moment. So before giving up this body everybody has to perform bhajana and sadhana properly and completely and absolutely surrender on to the lotus feet of guru and Krishna.

If you read Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja’s life history so much your enthusiasm will come into your bhajana and sadhana to Krishna. He was head school teacher. Do you understand? In the school, he was the head teacher. But he left his house, gave up his job and everything. He gave up his wife, family and everything. Then as travelled to some pilgrimage sites he came, first to Mathura to our Keshavaji Gaudiya Math. But at that time Gurudev was not there. Gurudev, had possibly travelled to Jaipur or somewhere. Then Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja came to Vrindavana. There he saw many deities of Vridavana, vigraha darshan. Then he suddenly saw the ISCKON temple. There is sign with an arrow pointing towards the ISCKON temple, which he followed and arrived at the temple. There he met with Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja. He then completely and absolutely surrendered to the lotus feet of Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja. He very quick took harinama and diksha from him. Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja very easily gave this to him. Then I think after only a couple of years, he also gave him sannyasa vesha. Some his seniors godbrothers complained, “Oh he is a new person. Why he is giving him sannyasa?” Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja replied, “You don’t know. I know him, I know his samskaras, impressions.” Because some his senior godbrothers were thinking, “Oh we have stayed here for many years, we know many things. But he is a junior.” But Swami Maharaja told, “No, I know him. His impressions, his samskaras are higher.” So for this regard, Swami Maharaja gave him tridanda sanyassa very quickly.

Then Swami Maharaja told him, “You must go to Orissa and preach there.” Swami Maharaja also told him, “One day your temple will be a world famous temple.” Once in his lecture, Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja told, “I have complete faith in my Gurudev.” Guru-mukha-padma-vākya, cittete koriya aikya. If you have firm faith in whatever Gurudev says, then you will achieve your perfect goal. When he first came to Bhubaneshwar that place was a complete what? Jungle. There were many dacoits and rikshawalas staying there. Still, he perform bhajana and sadhana alone there. He just worshipped his Thakuraji, Gopalaji. He worshipped Thakuraji by cooking for him, going to the people’s homes to collect some bhoga. Everything he needed was there. He also transcribed all the harikathas, lectures of his guru in his language. What was his language? Oriya language. He had no sevaka, nothing. He was staying alone and doing all of this service. Why am I saying this? Acharya jivana charitra, we have to read the life history of acharyas, then your inspiration to do bhajana and sadhana will come.

You must learn that guru-nishtha, guru-bhakti is called backbone of our bhajana and sadhana. Without guru-nishtha, or guru-bhakti, your chanting of the holy names, your sadhana is actually zero, nothing. If you have read Gurudev, Shrila Narayana Goswami Maharaja’s lecture on guru-nishtha, guru-bhakti, you will undertsand why it is called the backbone of our bhajana and sadhana.

guru pada padme rohe yara nistha bhakti
sansare tarite sei dhare maha sakti

Learn this verse. If you have guru-bhakti, guru-nishtha, if you are one pointed with guru, then you can deliver whole universe. If you really want to enter bhakti you have to read Ashraya Koriya Bandu Shri Guru Charana. Do you understand? Translate. (Devotee translates bhajan in Portugese) Shrila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja also sang this song –

‘nitāi-pada-kamala, koṭi-candra-suśītala je chāyāy jagata jurāy heno nitāi bine bhāi, rādhā-kṛṣṇa pāite nāi dṛḍha kori’ dharo nitāir pāy’

[ “The lotus feet of Lord Nityananda are a shelter where one will get the soothing moonlight not only of one, but of millions of moons. If the world wants to have real peace, it should take shelter of Lord Nityananda. Unless one takes shelter under the shade of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, it will be very difficult for him to approach Radha-Krishna. If one actually wants to enter into the dancing party of Radha-Krishna, he must firmly catch hold of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda.” (Nitai Pada Kamala, Narottama Dasa Thakura)]

Very carefully and tightly hold on to the feet of Nityananda Prabhu, this is our guru-tattva. Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja very nice explained this also. But today is also the appearance day of, Bhaktisiddhantra Prabhupada. There is little time left, I will speak for a few minutes on his contributions and life history and tomorrow we will also continue this topic. Bhakativinoder doya koro vichar, vichar kore le chite pave chamatkar. Deeply enter in the mercy of Bhaktivinoda Thakura. Then your heart will be overjoyed. Who is Bhaktivinoda Thakur? In Goloka Vrindavana, he is Shirmati Radhika’s very nearest and dearest sakhi, Kamala Manjari. Do you understand? Shrimati Radhika Herself gave an order to Bhaktivinoda Thakur, “Go to the material world and preach the highest philosophy, preach rasa-madhurya there.” But Bhaktivinoda Thakur, he prayed to Shrimati Radhika, “Please give one another thing to me, please give another sakhi to me. Please send Nayani Mani Manjari to me.” Then Shrimati Radhika, She was very please and said “Today Kamala Manjari requested you. Take another Manjari. Both of you will go.” Do you understand? So Bhaktivinoda Thakur brought, Nayana Mani Manjari from Goloka Vrindavana. Who is Nayana Mani Manjari? In this material world, she is Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada. Here we see them as father and son; this is only in this material world. Actually, who are they are both? They are the very nearest and dearest sakhis of Shrimati Radhika, Kamala Manjari and Nayana Mani Manjari.

Bhaktivinoda Thakur he is called Bhakti Ganga Bhagiratha. The Shrimad-Bhagavatam explains Bhagiratha manifested the Ganges in this material world from Satyaloka, Brahmaloka. Do you know this story or not? Who knows how Ganga Devi manifested in this material world? I will briefly tell you. Sagara Maharaja, his 60,000 sons were cursed by Kapiladev and their bodies turned to ash. Bhagiratha came in the Sagara Maharaja dynasty. For thousands and thousands years Bhagiratha performed hard austerities. Eventually he pleased Brahmaji and Brahmaji gave the kamandala water, which is also called Ganga jala. Ganga jala is the foot bathing water of Vamanadev Bhagavan. Then Gangadevi manifested in the material world and everything was purified. For this regard, gangara parasha hoile pashchate pavan.  If you touch the water of the Ganges all your sinful activities are destroyed. You have to go Navadvipa dhama and take bath in the Ganges. Then your sinful activities will be destroyed. You can also go to Haridvar, Ganges is also there. At the top of the Himalayas, Gangotri, is the source of Ganga. Gangadevi comes from there. The water of the Ganges is not material, it is called transcendental water. Try to understand this.

Bhagiratha manifested the Ganges in this material world. When the ashes of Sagara Maharaja’s 60,000 sons just touched the water of the Ganges, they were delivered from this material world and attained Vaikuntha dhama. If anyone dies, you have to take their ashes and put them in the Ganges. Then they will be delivered from this material world. But first you also must deliver yourself, first you must bathe in the Ganges. Come to Navadvipa dhama and bathe in the Ganges. Understand? Navadvipa dhama is very powerful. Shachinandana Gaurahari, Nimai, He performed sweet lilas in the water of the Ganges. Since Gangadevi does not want to leave Navadvipa dhama, she began whirlpooling and she made these nine islands. Navadvipa, navameans nine, dvipa means island. The nine limbs of bhakti are there. The nine limbs of bhakti are in Navadvipa dhama. Shravanakya-bhakti, shravanam, kirtanam, vishnoh, smaranam, pada-sevanam, archanam, vandanam, dasyam, sakhyam, atma-nivedanam. In Navadvipa, these limbs of bhakti are there. So Bhaktivinoda Thakur is known as Bhakti Ganga Bhagiratha. He manifested Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada in this world as Bhagiratha manifested Gangadevi. In this material world, we see their relationship as father and son, but this is not true. For this regard it is explained – Bhakativinoder doya koro vichar, vichar kore le chite pave chamatkar – When you deeply enter the philosophy of Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s conceptions, your heart will be overjoyed.

Why am I saying this? Because Bhaktivinoda Thakur, manifested Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada. Bhaktivinoda Thakur, was district magistrate in Orissa and everyday he used to take, darshan of Jagannathadev.  One day he went to Jagannathadev’s consort, Bimala Devi and asked “Give me a son who can preach shuddha-bhakti all over the world.” So for this regard, by the causeless mercy of Bimala Devi Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada came. Who is Bimala Devi? The consort of Lord Jagganatha. Because of this Bhaktivinoda Thakur gave him the name Bimala Prasad. Prasad means mercy, the mercy of Bimala Devi. When Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada was born, he had twelve tilaka marks on his body. He also had the mark of a sacred thread around his body. All kinds of symptoms of a mahapurusha were on his body. Try to understand these things. Ajanu-lambita-bhujau, his hand went down towards his knees. In a picture of Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada you can see his long arms. Ajanu-lambita-bhujau, tapta-kanchana, he had a very nice, beautiful molten gold complexion. All the symptoms of mahapurusha were there. Then during the Ratha Yathra, Jagannatha festival, Jagannathadev cart came in front of his Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada’s house. Then Jagannathadev stopped completely, for three days He did not move one inch. Jagannathadev, Krishna Himself want to directly meet with Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada. For this regard, the chariot completely stopped. Then Bhaktivinoda Thakur brought his small baby and offered him to the lotus feet of Jagannatha. Then Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada, as a small baby embraced Jagannatha, then Jagannatha’s garland fell on to his neck. Then what did Jagannatha’s chariot automatically do? It started to move.

You must read Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada’s life history. Jagannatha wanted to meet with His own eternal associate, parikar. Then when Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada, Bimala Prasad was only five years, he learned all of the shastras, Gita, Bhagavatam, everything. He was only five years old. He also studied astrology. The study of astrology is not easy. If you do not have perfect mathematical knowledge, you cannot study astrology. Otherwise you will just end up cheating people. Astronomy is not so easy to understand. Many people study astrology, but if you have a soft brain without perfect mathematical knowledge, you cannot provide perfect results. You will just end up cheating people. You have to calculate every second of every day. Those who have the very intelligent and sharp brain can study astrology. Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada perfectly conceived our calendar, Vaishnava calendar. He perfectly calculated every second so we could perfectly observe Ekadashi. For this regard, he manifested one panjika called, Sarasvati Vishudda Panjika. Everything there is perfectly calculated by him. Vidya Ekadashi, Shuddha Ekadashi, everythings is found there. He very carefully calculated every second, every moment.  Nowadays they just recopy. Do you understand?

Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada as an astrologist calculated everything perfectly. For this regard, in the astronomy department of Calcutta University, one great person, named Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay requested Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada, “Please come and take the lead chair of this astronomy department.” The British government had given Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay the title of the Royal Bengali Tiger. Why? I am not saying this myself. Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada wrote this in his own biography, “This great person reserved that post for me.” Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada glorified that great person Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay by writing, “He reserved this post for me in Calcutta University.” He was not an ordinary person. He was also very powerful, even the British government was afraid of him. Do you understand? The British government, conquered the whole world. The sun never set in the British kingdom. The entire world was in complete fear of the British government. Do you understand? But Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay, was very brave and not afraid of them. For this regard, British government gave him this title, the Royal Bengali Tiger. He was very ferocious and did not care. Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada wrote this in his autobiography, I am simply repeating his words by stating how he glorified Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay.

One day, Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay was travelling in a first class train with one British government high ranked officer. They were both sitting side by side. The British officer did not like that Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay had to sit by  him. So for this regard, when Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay he was taking sleeping, he took his boot. Do you understand? He threw his boot outside of the train. Who threw his boot? The British officer he threw the boot of Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay. When he awoke and saw his boot was not there he realized, “Oh this person must have done it, there is no other explanation.” So a few minutes after the British officer slept, Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay took his coat, a very valuable coat with many valuable things in there and threw it outside the train. Do you understand? Then a few minutes after waking the British officer looked and thought, “Where is my coat?” Then he asked, “Where is my coat? Where is my coat?” Then Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay replied, “Your coat has gone searching for my boot.” Then British the officer had no reply. Why I am saying this? Because Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada wrote in his autobiography, “This great person, had reserved this post in Calcutta University astrology department for me.” Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada told him, “I have not come in this material world just to calculate the movement of the stars and planets.” Do you understand? If you study astronomy, all the stars are always moving and it is not so easy to measure. Astronomers expertly calculate the minute movements of different stars and planets such as Mercury, etc.

So for this regard, Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada wrote and told him, “I have come here to preach harinama and fulfil the desire of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.” So he rejected his proposal. But Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay replied, “As long as you live in this material world, the post will be reserved for you. No one can take that post.” Tomorrow I will tell how Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada received diksha-mantras from Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja. Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada received harinama and kurma-mantra from Bhaktivinoda Thakur. But he took his purnadiskha, complete diksha from Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja. At first, Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja told, “No, no I will not give diksha to him.” Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja he was very humble, so he told, “He is a very learned scholar.” He was then  given the name, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, this is his sannyasa name. Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada has asked Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja three times, “Give me diksha-mantra.” But Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja very humbly told, “You are a very learned scholar, I have no qualifications. No degrees. How can I possibly accept you as my disciple?” For three days Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada did not drink eat or water. Then Bhaktivinoda Thakur told to Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja, “If you not give him diksha, he will die.” Then Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja, “First, I will ask my Nitai. If Nitai gives me  permission, then I will give diksha to him.”

Then next day, Bhaktivinoda Thakur met with Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja and asked, “Did Nitai gave you permission or not?” Then Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja, “Oh, I forgot to ask my Nitai.” Then next day Bhaktivinoda Thakur again asked Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja, “Did you ask Nitai?” Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja replied, “Bolo yes, Nitai gave me permission. I will then give diksha.” In this way Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabuphada received his diksha-mantras from the uttama-mahabhagavat Shrila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja.

All of you must chant the gayatri-mantra which you received from guru. Don’t neglect chanting your gayatri-mantra, otherwise you will go to hell. No one will be able to protect to you from hell. Very carefully listen, everybody has to chant their gayatri-mantra and gopal-mantra you received from guru. Some have given up their sacred thread. No, your sacred thread is Baladeva Prabhu. I have explained this before. Do you understand? Please do not commit this offense, aparadha. Everyday you must chant the gayarti-mantra, gopal-mantra, guru-mantra you received from Gurudev. If you do not chant them, even Krishna will not protect you. No one can protect you. Harau ruṣṭe gurustrātā gurau ruṣṭe na kaścana. If Krishna is unhappy or angry with you, guru can protect you. But if guru is unhappy. Who can protect you? Not even Krishna can protect you. So very carefully keep your tulasimala, kanthimala. Don’t give up your kanthi mala, do not give up your sacred thread and never stop chanting the holy names. Understand this. Very carefully. What have many done? Stopped chanting holy names or gave up their kanthi mala, no longer chanting their gayatri-mantra. Maybe they have even started eating fish, meat or eggs again or they are know consuming drugs or alcohol. Stupid nonsense. Do not do this. Do you understand? I always tell you, you have almost achieved Krishna. How far from Krishna are you? Only two fingers. So chant the holy names. Try to understand. I request all of you, don’t stop chanting the holy names, never stop chanting your gayatri-mantra.

So returning to Bhaktisiddhanta Prabuphada, in this way he received diksha-mantra from Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja. He also asked Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja, “I want to establish one temple in Calcutta.”  But Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji Maharaja told, “Don’t go the place of…” Calcutta means, “…Kali place.” But first, Bhaktisiddhanta Prabuphada established a Gaudiya math in Calcutta. Do you understand? Baghbazar Gaudiya Math was the first temple he established.  Maybe tomorrow we will discuss further the life history and contributions of Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabuphada. There are so many sweet pastimes of Bhaktisiddhanta Prabuphada to discuss. Try to understand these things. Who is the original acharya that established our Gaudiya temple? Bhaktisiddhanta Prabuphada. Understand? Jay Shrila Gurudev ki Jai, Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabuphada ki Jai!
